No—not for every downloaded game. A game you bought digitally or own on disc is separate from a PlayStation Plus benefit, though Plus is required for online multiplayer in most PS4 and PS5 games. Games claimed as monthly Plus games and games downloaded from the Extra or Premium catalog depend on an active membership. When that membership ends, those benefits can become unavailable even if the game is still installed.
Does PlayStation Plus unlock every downloaded game?
No. Downloading a game does not tell you what license grants access. Check how you got it: it may be an independent purchase, a monthly game claimed through Plus, or a catalog game available through an eligible plan. Sony describes monthly games as available to download and play at no extra cost during an active membership; catalog access is also a subscription benefit. What happens when you cancel or your membership expires?
Requesting cancellation does not end benefits immediately. According to Sony’s Ireland cancellation guidance, benefits continue through the paid subscription period. Monthly games and catalog access become unavailable when that period ends, along with Plus online multiplayer and online storage benefits.

The game files may remain on the console, but installation is not the same as an active license. If you resubscribe, eligible claimed monthly games can become available again. A catalog game is different: you also need it to remain in the service. Sony’s guidance on cancellation notes that discounted purchases and certain redeemed extras are treated separately from subscription benefits; it does not mean a monthly game or catalog download has become a permanent purchase.
Can you play downloaded Plus games offline?
Sony’s PlayStation Blog guide, published May 23, 2022, says downloaded Extra and Premium/Deluxe catalog games can be played offline, but the console must connect to PSN every seven days to validate the membership and maintain access. That interval is a service rule stated in that dated guide, not a general guarantee for every downloaded game. Check current terms for your region and the specific title if you rely on offline play. Offline single-player play and online multiplayer are separate questions. Sony says Plus is required for online multiplayer in most PS4 and PS5 games, with exceptions. Check the individual game’s Store page for its multiplayer requirement or Sony’s PlayStation Plus support page.

What if a catalog game leaves, or its add-ons stop working?
A catalog title can leave PlayStation Plus while you still have an active membership. When that happens, you lose access through the catalog. Sony’s May 2022 guide also says DLC or add-ons associated with a downloaded catalog game become unavailable if the membership expires or the title leaves, until you resubscribe or purchase the game. This concerns add-ons associated with the catalog entitlement; it should not be read as a rule about DLC bought for a game you independently own.

Why does a downloaded game show a padlock?
A lock icon does not prove that your Plus subscription expired. Sony lists license problems unrelated to subscription expiry among the cases where restoring licenses may help. Confirm you are using the account that owns or claimed the entitlement and check whether the subscription is active and the title remains in the catalog. If the lock persists, restore licenses:
- On PS5: Open Settings > Users and Accounts > Other > Restore Licenses.
- On PS4: Open Settings > Account Management > Restore Licenses.
Sony says restoring licenses does not affect saved data. Follow Sony’s license-restoration instructions if the menu or result differs on your console.

How to identify the cause in your case
Work through these checks in order. They distinguish an expired membership from a catalog change, multiplayer requirement, or account-license issue.

- Check the membership end date: If you canceled, access should continue through the paid period; confirm whether that period has actually ended.
- Check catalog availability: If it is an Extra or Premium catalog game, confirm the title is still included in your region’s catalog.
- Clarify what is blocked: If the game launches but online multiplayer does not, check the title’s Store listing for its Plus requirement.
- If playing a catalog game offline: Confirm the console has connected to PSN within the seven-day validation interval Sony stated in its May 2022 guide.
- Check the account and license: Make sure the console is using the account with the relevant purchase or Plus entitlement, then restore licenses if needed.
Sony’s support pages also identify benefit sharing and console setup as relevant in some cases. If another account or console is involved, consult the Plus support guidance for your region.
