The Solar System is chaotic, but that does not mean it is about to fall apart. Models find a small chance of major disruption among the inner planets over the next five billion years; the much more certain long-term change is that the Sun will age, expand into a red giant and eventually become a white dwarf. Earth could lose its ability to support life long before that expansion, while its eventual physical fate remains uncertain.
What does it mean to say the Solar System is unstable?
In planetary science, “chaotic” has a specific meaning: tiny differences in the planets’ starting positions and motions grow over time, so precise orbital predictions eventually become impossible. It does not mean the planets are already on the verge of colliding or that their orbits are rapidly breaking down.

A 2022 study by Hoang, Mogavero and Laskar gives the inner planets’ Lyapunov time—the approximate timescale over which such differences grow enough to undermine precise prediction—as about five million years. The same study describes the system as statistically stable over much longer spans. Chaos limits long-range certainty; it is not, by itself, a forecast of imminent destruction.

In a 2009 study, Jacques Laskar and Mickaël Gastineau integrated 2,501 possible orbital solutions for five billion years. About one percent developed a large increase in Mercury’s eccentricity, meaning its orbit became much more elongated. The paper’s abstract says the simulations included the Moon and general relativity. That one-percent figure is the fraction of modeled solutions that followed this pathway, not a measured chance that a particular future event will occur.

In a rare simulated trajectory, the changes went on to destabilize the terrestrial planets and allowed possible collisions involving Earth after about 3.34 billion years of simulated evolution. This is an example of what the equations permit, not the expected history of the planets.
Orbital chaos and the Sun’s evolution are different risks
| Question | Orbital chaos | Solar evolution |
|---|---|---|
| What changes? | The planets’ orbits, especially those of the inner planets, can diverge in long-term simulations. | The Sun changes as it uses up hydrogen in its core, later expanding and shedding its outer layers. |
| What kind of forecast is it? | A low-probability instability pathway appears in a small fraction of modeled orbital solutions. | The Sun’s broad evolutionary sequence is expected; the exact fate of individual planets is less certain. |
| What could happen to Earth? | A rare destabilizing trajectory permits possible planetary collisions. | Habitability may end before the red-giant phase; physical engulfment or destruction is possible but not certain. |
| When? | The cited integrations span five billion years; the rare Earth-involving pathway occurred after about 3.34 billion simulated years. | NASA estimates the Sun’s red-giant transformation will begin in approximately five billion years; NASA educational material places the beginning of ocean evaporation at about two billion years from now. |
The table describes two independent processes. A future collision caused by orbital changes is not the same event as a planet being affected by the Sun’s expansion. The estimates also have different meanings: the orbital figures come from numerical experiments, while the solar timeline describes stellar evolution.

Will Earth always be able to support life?
No. NASA’s educational material says increasing solar luminosity will warm Earth, contribute to water loss and lead toward a runaway greenhouse. It gives about two billion years from now as an approximate horizon for the beginning of ocean evaporation and the end of surface organic life. That is a broad educational estimate, not a precise countdown or a date for the loss of every possible form of life.

Will Earth survive the red-giant Sun?
NASA’s 2026 account says the Sun will swell to more than 100 times its present size and that Mercury, Venus and possibly Earth may be destroyed. The word “possibly” matters: Earth’s physical fate is not established with certainty by that description. NASA’s account also says the fate of the more distant planets, particularly the gas giants, is unclear.
So there are two different answers to “Will Earth survive?” Earth is not expected to remain habitable indefinitely, but whether it will be physically engulfed or destroyed during the Sun’s red-giant phase is uncertain. The fate of the outer planets is even less settled in the cited account.

Why “doomed” needs a qualification
On the timescales considered here, neither the rare orbital-instability simulations nor the Sun’s eventual transformation supports a claim that the Solar System is about to disintegrate. The models permit uncommon inner-planet disruptions; separately, the Sun’s aging is expected to radically alter the inner Solar System. These are long-term outcomes, not near-term warnings, and neither makes every planet’s precise fate certain.
