Is OBS the Best Streaming Software for YouTube Live?

OBS is a strong, flexible choice for YouTube Live, while Streamlabs offers a guided setup with integrated widgets. The right option depends on your PC, stream settings, and workflow.

OBS Studio is a strong default for YouTube Live if you want detailed control over scenes and encoding. It is not automatically the best choice for every creator: Streamlabs Desktop may suit you better if you value a guided setup with integrated widgets and overlays. Your computer, stream format, and preferred workflow matter more than a universal ranking.

What should you use for YouTube Live?

Start with OBS Studio if you are comfortable configuring scenes and want control over the stream output. Consider Streamlabs Desktop if you prefer a guided workflow that brings account linking, sources, widgets, audio, and go-live checks together. Streamlabs describes these features in its Quick Start Guide, published May 20, 2026; that vendor guide does not establish that Streamlabs is easier, faster, or better overall.

Neither application can compensate for an overloaded computer, an unstable upload connection, or unsuitable encoder settings. There is no independent benchmark here establishing one as objectively superior. Choose a starting point based on the workflow you want, then test it on your own system.

Choose Best fit What to keep in mind
OBS Studio You want control over scenes and output configuration. Performance depends on the encoder, resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity.
Streamlabs Desktop You want a guided setup with account linking and integrated widgets and overlays. The setup guide documents its workflow, not independent usability or performance results. Its free version includes one platform per video-layout orientation.

Can your computer run OBS while streaming?

A computer that meets OBS Studio’s listed system requirements may still struggle with a particular stream. OBS says, “Having a compatible system does not guarantee that it is capable of streaming or recording using OBS Studio.” Its system-requirements guidance notes that CPU demands vary with encoder, resolution, FPS, and scene complexity, and recommends trying Tools > Auto Configuration Wizard for suitable starting settings. See the OBS system requirements.

OBS’s hardware-encoding guidance generally favors hardware encoders for performance: they shift work from the CPU to a specialized component in the GPU. But older hardware-encoder generations may produce lower image quality than software encoding at the same bitrate. Check OBS’s current compatibility information for your operating system and hardware before choosing an encoder; support varies across vendors and devices. See OBS’s hardware encoding guidance.

  • If the stream stutters or drops frames, test a less demanding resolution or frame rate and simplify animated or layered scenes.
  • Try the available hardware encoder, then compare its output with software encoding at a sustainable bitrate.
  • Use the Auto Configuration Wizard as a starting point, not a substitute for a real stream test.

What bitrate and encoder settings should you use?

YouTube’s encoder recommendations depend on codec, resolution, and frame rate. The figures below are platform recommendations, not a guarantee that your connection can sustain them. The table reproduces selected recommendations from YouTube Help’s encoder guidance, accessed October 3, 2026.

Resolution and frame rate H.264 AV1 or H.265/HEVC
1080p60 17 Mbps 12 Mbps
1080p30 14 Mbps 10 Mbps
720p60 8 Mbps 6 Mbps
720p30 8 Mbps 6 Mbps

Do not treat one bitrate as right for every stream: the codec and frame rate change the recommendation. Use YouTube’s current encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions guide for other resolutions and frame rates.

  • Analog Audio In: Capture in-game chat or commentary with 3.5mm input
  • Rate control: CBR.
  • Keyframes: two-second interval recommended; do not exceed four seconds.
  • Frame rate: YouTube’s guidance supports up to 60 fps.
  • Ingest and video codecs: RTMP or RTMPS, with H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1 listed. YouTube recommends RTMPS for secure transmission to its servers.
  • Audio: YouTube lists AAC or MP3.

For HDR, YouTube’s general encoder guidance recommends H.265 over RTMP(S) and says HLS may be considered if the encoder lacks RTMP HDR support. HDR setup has additional requirements, so check YouTube’s dedicated HDR instructions and your hardware rather than applying the standard settings above uncritically.

How to choose between OBS and Streamlabs

Choose OBS for configuration control

OBS is a reasonable first choice if you want to build scenes and adjust output settings yourself. Its setup involves decisions about sources, audio, encoder, resolution, frame rate, and bitrate. That flexibility is useful when you want to shape the workflow, but it also means you should leave time to configure and test.

Choose Streamlabs for a guided workflow

Streamlabs’ Quick Start Guide describes connecting a platform such as YouTube, creating scenes and sources, adding widgets, selecting a microphone under Mic/Auxiliary Device, and setting canvas and output resolution, FPS, bitrate, and encoder. It then recommends checking alerts, camera placement, and audio before going live. The guide says there is no one-size-fits-all setting; the same is true when choosing between the applications.

Test before you go live

YouTube recommends testing upload bitrate and matching the test’s movement and audio to the planned stream. A static desktop scene, for example, does not test the same workload as fast gameplay, animated overlays, or a moving camera.

  1. Set your encoder, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, and keyframe interval in your streaming software, using YouTube’s guidance as the starting point.
  2. Run a test with representative movement, sources, and audio. If you use a microphone, confirm that the selected input is the one you intend to use.
  3. Watch YouTube’s stream health and messages during the test and the live event. If the connection cannot sustain the selected settings, reduce the stream’s demands and test again.

OBS’s historical YouTube setup guide was last updated October 8, 2021. For current encoder values, use YouTube’s live encoder guidance rather than relying on older setting recommendations.

Cost and copyright checks

For a computer-based stream, include the cost of equipment and the time spent configuring and monitoring it when comparing approaches; the right trade-off depends on what you already own and how you plan to stream. For continuous pre-recorded playback, compare the cost of keeping a computer and connection running with a cloud slot before deciding.

Using streaming software does not grant rights to the music, video, or other material you broadcast. Check that you have the necessary rights for every source in a live stream or playlist, and review YouTube’s rules before broadcasting. If you plan to loop recorded material, do not assume that being able to stream it makes it eligible under YouTube’s policies.

Quick Recap

Common problems and what to check

  • Stream drops frames or stutters: The selected output may be too demanding for the computer, encoder, or connection. Try a lower resolution or frame rate, reduce scene complexity, or choose a different available encoder; then test again.
  • Connection is unstable: The chosen bitrate may exceed what the upload connection can sustain reliably. Test upload capacity and lower the bitrate or output quality if needed.
  • Video looks worse than expected: Check that the encoder, codec, resolution, frame rate, and bitrate are a sensible match. Hardware encoding can reduce CPU workload, but older hardware encoders may deliver lower image quality at the same bitrate.
  • Audio is missing or wrong: Verify the selected microphone or audio input and test it with the same sources you will use live. Streamlabs’ setup guide labels the primary microphone input Mic/Auxiliary Device.
  • Test looked fine, live stream does not: Recheck stream health and messages during the event, and make sure the test included representative motion and audio rather than a lighter scene.
