Yes. OBS Studio is a capable free tool for recording YouTube videos to a local file, whether you use it only to record or record while streaming. It gives you control over quality, encoders, audio tracks, and output, but the best settings depend on your computer, footage, storage, and editing software. Start with a short test recording before an important shoot.
What OBS is good at—and what to consider
OBS can capture a screen, camera, audio sources, or a scene you assemble, then save the result locally. The OBS Project describes recording as a use case alongside live broadcasting and offline recording (Standard Recording Output Guide, published May 26, 2023).

Choose a recording quality setting
Simple Output mode
OBS recommends Simple mode if you do not need detailed recording adjustments. Its recording-quality choices include Same as stream, High Quality, Indistinguishable Quality, and Lossless. Higher-quality choices can use substantially more storage. Separate recording encoders may also use additional system resources. See the OBS Studio Overview Guide and Standard Recording Output Guide.

Lossless is rarely a practical default for ordinary YouTube production: the OBS Project says it uses the CPU encoder and creates tremendously large files. Its published estimate is around 7 GB of data per minute, a preset-size estimate from OBS Project documentation published in 2023, not a universal file-size measurement (Recording Encoder Presets Guide).
Advanced Output mode
Use Advanced mode when you need separate control of recording and streaming output, or need multiple audio tracks. OBS documents baseline constant-quality ranges for NVENC, x264, AMD, and QuickSync, but those are starting points rather than universal prescriptions. The guide notes that lower constant-quality values mean higher quality and larger files. Check the current OBS guidance for your encoder, then test with representative content: fast motion, screen text, and the audio sources you expect to use (Advanced Recording Settings Guide, published November 30, 2023).

Do not treat YouTube’s upload bitrate recommendations as OBS recording bitrate requirements. YouTube’s figures concern encoding a completed upload; local recording choices are made in OBS and should reflect your encoder and workflow.
Set resolution and frame rate for the video you are making
Record at the resolution and frame rate that fit your intended content and editing workflow. YouTube recommends uploading at the same frame rate as the source recording. For computer viewing, YouTube lists 16:9 as the standard aspect ratio, while its player adapts to other ratios (YouTube Help: Video resolution & aspect ratios).

Before committing to a format, make a short recording and inspect small text, motion, and audio sync in the actual editor you plan to use. Higher resolution or frame rate can increase storage needs and encoding load; whether your computer can handle a particular configuration depends on its hardware and workload.
Pick a recording container your editor can use
For many local recordings, OBS recommends MKV because an unexpected interruption is less likely to leave the entire recording unusable. The trade-off is that some editing programs support MKV less well. OBS includes a built-in remux function for changing the container without treating the file as a new recording. Its format guide also covers hybrid and fragmented MP4/MOV variants, which combine some resilience from fragmented writing with broader editing compatibility. - In OBS, open File > Remux Recordings.
- Select the MKV recording and choose the destination or output location offered by the dialog.
- Remux it to a container your editor accepts, such as MP4, then open the remuxed file in your editing software and check playback before deleting the original.
Remuxing changes the container; it is not a substitute for checking codec compatibility with your editor. Keep the original until you know the converted file works.

OBS can record microphone and auxiliary-device inputs. An external microphone is optional: it may help if your existing setup does not capture narration clearly, but it is not a requirement for recording with OBS. Check that the intended input is selected, that your voice is audible, and that desktop or other source audio is not unintentionally missing or duplicated. If you plan to edit audio separately, Advanced mode can provide multiple audio tracks.

For YouTube uploads, the platform lists AAC-LC, Opus, or Eclipsa Audio as audio codec options and a 48 kHz sample rate. These are upload recommendations, not a mandate to use a particular OBS recording format (YouTube recommended upload encoding settings, page checked in 2026).
Make a test recording before the real take
- Set up the scene and sources you expect to use, including the microphone or auxiliary audio input if needed.
- Choose Simple or Advanced Output mode, then select a quality preset or encoder settings appropriate to your computer and intended edit.
- Record a representative sample with the same resolution, frame rate, motion, and audio you expect in the finished video.
- Play it back and open it in your editor. Check picture detail, motion, audio levels, sync, file size, and whether the editor accepts the format.
- If the recording stutters, the file is too large, or the editor cannot open it, change one setting at a time and repeat the test.
Common recording problems and fixes
- Recording is unexpectedly huge: a high-quality or lossless choice may be generating more data than your workflow needs. Try a less storage-intensive quality setting; OBS estimates around 7 GB per minute for its Lossless preset, as noted above.
- Recording strains the computer: a demanding quality setting or separate recording encoder may add load. Test a lower-demand setting or another encoder available on your hardware, then verify the resulting file rather than assuming a particular encoder will be best.
- An interrupted recording will not open: MKV is OBS’s recommended choice for many recordings because it is more resilient to interruption. If you already have an MKV, try the OBS remux function for an editor-compatible container.
- Your editor rejects the file: check its supported containers and codecs. Remuxing can address container compatibility, but it cannot make an unsupported codec compatible; test the remuxed file before removing the source.
- Audio is missing or on the wrong track: verify the selected microphone/auxiliary input and track routing in OBS, then make a short test and listen to each intended track in your editor.
- The YouTube upload differs from the recording: confirm the export uses a supported upload format and the source frame rate. YouTube recommends MP4, H.264, progressive video, and retaining the recording’s frame rate for uploads; those recommendations apply to the uploaded file, not the OBS local-recording bitrate.
