The clearest story connection: Travis Strikes Again and The Silver Case
Goichi “Suda51” Suda directly confirmed that Travis Strikes Again: No More Heroes connects to The Silver Case. In a 2018 interview with Gematsu, he said: “Yes, they are connected. If you play The 25th Ward, you’ll understand the connection.” That makes The 25th Ward the specific game he pointed to for context.

This statement confirms a connection, but it does not establish that you must play either The Silver Case or The 25th Ward to follow the core No More Heroes story. Suda’s comment is about understanding the link between works, not a stated prerequisite for enjoying the main series.

Recurring characters are not automatic proof of one timeline
Suda has described using characters across different works in changing roles, comparing the approach to Osamu Tezuka’s Star System. In a 2017 Game Informer interview, he explained that a character could function like an actor taking different parts, naming appearances associated with The Silver Case, Flower, Sun, and Rain, and Mondo Zappa from Killer7. A familiar face can therefore signal reuse or a crossover without proving that every appearance belongs to the same chronology.

- Earn money to enter ranked battles! To enter into each subsequent ranked battle, you’ll need to pay a pretty steep fee. Travis must take on various missions around town to make the money he needs to fight
- Use your skills to dominate opponents! Enjoy even more hardcore slash-‘em-up action than ever before as you use the Joy-Con’s intuitive controls to wield Travis Touchdown’s trusty Beam Katana along with a slew of pro wrestling techniques!
- Also, featured for the first time in the series, Travis can now use his Death Glove to activate a variety of skills, allowing for more strategic battles
No More Heroes and Killer7: creative reaction, not confirmed continuity
Suda described No More Heroes as a reaction to Killer7, including a deliberate shift in tone and setting. His statement that “Everything within No More Heroes is a reaction to Killer7” speaks to creative direction; it is not a claim that the two games share a plot. The distinction matters: influence explains how one work responds to another, while continuity means their events belong to a connected story.
No More Heroes 3 references and cross-game characters
In interviews about No More Heroes 3, Suda discussed a connection involving Midori and Fleming from Shadows of the Damned. That supports describing the games as sharing characters or references. It does not, by itself, make every Suda51 title part of a single confirmed timeline. See Suda’s comments in Siliconera and the Game Informer interview.

Do you need to play The Silver Case before Travis Strikes Again?
No prerequisite is established by Suda’s comments. If your goal is to understand the specific cross-game connection he confirmed, he pointed to The 25th Ward as helpful context. If your goal is simply to follow No More Heroes, the cited interviews do not say that you must first complete either game.

Why crossovers can depend on ownership
Suda has said that No More Heroes is mainly owned by Marvelous, while The Silver Case and Flower, Sun, and Rain are Grasshopper-owned. Ownership can affect whether a crossover is possible or requires permission; it is not evidence that two stories are canonically linked. Because ownership statements can be time-sensitive and do not answer the continuity question, they should not be treated as a current legal inventory.
