Is my Android phone too old to update? Age alone cannot tell you. Android has no universal age cutoff: whether a phone can receive a new Android version or security patch depends on its exact model and the manufacturer’s support policy. Check the phone’s update details in Settings, then compare them with the manufacturer’s information for that model.
Check your Android version and security update
Android version, Android security update level, and Google Play system level are separate details. An older Android version does not, by itself, tell you when the phone last received a security patch.

- Open Settings.
- Tap About phone.
- Find Android version, Android security update, and Google Play system update. Labels can vary by device.
- Note the exact model name and the displayed security update date.
To check for an available update, open Settings and look for System and Software Update. The path and wording may differ by manufacturer. If no update appears, Android recommends restarting the phone and checking again. Android’s update instructions explain the general process and note that some older models may not be able to run the latest Android version.

Use the manufacturer’s official support information for the model you recorded. Check both the Android-version update policy and the security-support end date: a phone may stop receiving major Android version updates at a different time from security updates. Policies can also vary by model, market, or carrier, so do not infer another manufacturer’s terms from a policy for one brand.

Google Pixel example
Google’s current Pixel update policy lists seven years of OS and security updates for Pixel 8 and newer model groups. It lists five years of OS and security updates for Pixel 6 and Pixel 7 generation phones and Pixel Fold. Those periods are measured from each model’s first availability on the Google Store in the US. Google lists Pixel 5a and earlier as no longer receiving Android version or security updates. These are Google’s terms for the listed Pixel models, not an Android-wide lifespan rule or a promise for other regions, carriers, or manufacturers.
There is no general official figure for how many years all Android phones can be updated. The Pixel periods apply only to the named model groups and should not be treated as a universal benchmark.

What it means if no update is available
A missing update can mean the model is no longer eligible, but it can also reflect availability or rollout differences. Restart and check again, then consult the manufacturer’s support page for your exact model and market. Compare its policy with the phone’s displayed Android version and security update date rather than relying on the Android version number alone.
Android describes security updates as a distinct update category from Android version updates and Google Play system updates. If the phone no longer receives a new Android version, check whether security patches are still covered before concluding that all support has ended.

Should you replace a phone that no longer gets updates?
There is no official instruction that every phone beyond its guaranteed update period must immediately be replaced. If manufacturer-confirmed security support has ended, weigh the practical trade-offs:
- Security: Consider what you use the phone for and the exposure you are comfortable accepting without ongoing manufacturer patches.
- Apps and features: Check whether the apps and capabilities you rely on still work or require a newer Android version.
- Condition and cost: Compare the phone’s battery, performance, and repair needs with the cost of replacing it.
If you decide to replace it, compare the stated OS and security-support period for the exact model, when that period starts and ends, and whether the commitment covers your market and carrier variant. For a refurbished phone, verify the remaining manufacturer support as well as the seller’s condition and return terms.
