Is Monetization Killing Gaming? Aion 2 Shows Why Players Are Worried

Aion 2’s announced global model raises fair questions about paid access and progression, but it does not alone prove the game is pay-to-win.

Monetization can damage trust when payment affects progression or locks players out of an online game’s economy. Aion 2’s announced global model raises both questions: it makes Membership a condition of using its player Market and currency exchange, while its paid pass may include upgrade materials. That is reason to scrutinize the design—not enough, on its own, to prove the game is pay-to-win or that monetization is “killing gaming.”

What is the monetization concern in Aion 2?

The concern is not simply that Aion 2 has a shop. It is that some paid features may touch systems players commonly regard as part of the game itself: trading with other players, exchanging currencies, and earning progression materials. A cosmetic purchase changes appearance; an access gate or progression aid can affect how players participate or advance.

Those distinctions matter more than the presence of a price tag. They also make it important to separate the game’s announced global model from its earlier regional service history. NCSOFT said Aion 2 launched in Korea and Taiwan on November 19, 2025; those services should not be treated as proof that global terms are identical.

What did NCSOFT announce for the global model?

A secondary report reproducing NCSOFT’s July 8, 2026 global business-model notice described Aion 2 as free to play, with gameplay-earned Kina and premium Quna. The announcement outlined these systems:

System or purchase Announced terms What the terms establish
Player Market Players set prices and trade using Kina; active Membership was required to use the Market, according to the reproduced July notice. Access to player trading was tied to a paid membership in the announced model.
Kina–Quna Exchange One player could offer Kina in exchange for another player’s Quna; active Membership was required to use the Exchange, according to the reproduced July notice. The announcement included a player-to-player currency exchange, not a direct statement that players could buy power outright.
Membership The notice’s announced U.S. price was $15 per month. Membership also included unspecified gameplay benefits and access to a shop for additional Kina purchases. The price and benefits are terms reported from the July announcement, not a verified description of the live October 3, 2026 build.
Shop consumables NCSOFT described them as not affecting gear progression or long-term power and as obtainable through regular gameplay. This is the publisher’s characterization; it does not describe every paid system.
Daeva Pass The free Standard Track was paired with a Quna-priced Premium Track. Premium rewards could include cosmetics, items, upgrade materials, and other currencies. The announcement did not establish how much the materials change progression or whether equivalent rewards are available through play.
Founder’s Packs The report described early access and cosmetic or consumable items. The July report does not establish current package availability or current terms.

The central tension is visible in the announced mechanics: the publisher described shop consumables as earnable and not affecting long-term power, but the premium pass could include upgrade materials, and Membership was required for two economy features. Those details merit scrutiny without assuming they all have the same effect.

Does the announcement prove Aion 2 is pay-to-win?

No. It establishes that the announced global plan put access to player trading and currency exchange behind Membership and that premium-pass rewards could include upgrade materials. It does not establish how those materials affect combat, the pace of advancement, or competition between paying and free players. Nor does it establish whether later global terms changed.

As of October 3, 2026, the July notice alone is not enough to verify the live Membership price, Market and Exchange access rules, Founder’s Pack availability, or the practical effect of pass rewards. Treat the figures and mechanics above as announced terms, not as a full audit of the current build.

There is also a distinction between a game’s own paid systems and prohibited third-party trading. NCSOFT’s global operation policy prohibits real-money trading of items or currency, account trading, unauthorized programs, and certain open-market abuse, and lists account sanctions for violations. That policy does not make the game’s own Membership or premium-currency systems equivalent to third-party trading.

Why do players object to pay-for-convenience systems?

Monetization can create friction even when it does not sell a direct combat advantage. A paid skip, upgrade aid, or access pass can make a player wonder whether ordinary play has been slowed or restricted to make spending attractive. Gating a shared economy can raise a different concern: whether paying becomes a condition for taking part in a system that shapes social or commercial play.

A 2023 paper by Lundy, Raman, Fu, and Leyton-Brown, “Pay to (Not) Play: Monetizing Impatience in Mobile Games,” models paid wait-time skips. The authors argue that high revenue and low purchase rates can coexist, and that a paid skip can offer both immediate gratification and perceived value for completing a difficult task. This is a model of incentives in mobile games, not evidence about Aion 2. Its abstract’s statement that mobile gaming “grosses over $100 billion annually” is the paper’s 2023 wording, not a current market estimate.

A September 2026 research article analyzing Steam reviews identifies pay-to-progress, pay-to-win, and distrust of purchases among the monetization topics it studies. That provides context for why players may react badly to systems that appear to sell convenience or competitive progress; it does not demonstrate that Aion 2 has caused those effects.

What do Aion 2’s sales figures tell us—and what don’t they?

In a January 7, 2026 press release, NCSOFT reported that Aion 2 had generated more than KRW 100 billion in cumulative revenue by January 3, 46 days after its Korea and Taiwan launch, and that more than one million characters purchased memberships during that interval. These are company-reported figures for that period. They show reported sales and membership purchases, not player approval, dissatisfaction, or the effects of the later announced global model.

How to judge whether monetization crosses the line

Instead of relying on a loaded label such as “predatory,” assess what spending changes in practice. For Aion 2, the announcement makes these the useful questions:

  • Power: Do paid rewards change combat strength, gear progression, or competitive outcomes, or are they mainly cosmetic?
  • Progression: How much do upgrade materials speed advancement, and can free players earn comparable rewards through ordinary play?
  • Access: Does a membership gate only optional convenience, or does it exclude non-paying players from important trading and currency systems?
  • Clarity: Are paid rewards listed plainly, and are any outcomes random?
  • Scope: Do rules differ by region, platform, or date?

The July announcement answers part of the access question and identifies possible pass rewards, but it does not settle their effects on power or progression. Those conclusions require current, region-specific terms and evidence of how the systems work in play.

Is monetization really “killing gaming”?

That headline is an argument, not a conclusion established by Aion 2’s announced terms. The case illustrates a broader risk: when payment intersects with advancement or access to a shared game economy, players may see the design as selling back progress or participation. Whether that perception matches actual competitive effects depends on the live implementation, the alternatives available through play, and the rules in each region.
