The tricky part: even when respondent names don’t show, an administrator or the form owner can sometimes still infer identity through platform behavior.
This guide answers the question directly, then walks you through the exact settings to aim for anonymity in Microsoft Forms, plus what to check when you test.

Quick Answer: Is Microsoft Forms Anonymous?
Microsoft Forms can collect anonymous responses, but it’s not automatically anonymous in every scenario. When people respond without signing in (or when your configuration doesn’t require user identification), the Responses view typically doesn’t include names.
If respondents sign in with a work/school account, anonymity may be limited even if you don’t see names in the UI. In organizations, policies and admin access can also affect privacy.

What Microsoft Forms Actually Means by Anonymity
“Anonymous” in Microsoft Forms usually means the form owner can’t see who submitted a response (for example, no name column in the Responses tab). It doesn’t necessarily mean Microsoft, your organization, or a tenant admin can’t associate activity with accounts or devices.
In practice, you should treat Microsoft Forms anonymity as “not identifying to the form owner in the Responses UI,” unless your scenario is clearly sign-in free and configured for anonymity.
Can Form Owners See Respondent Identities?
Yes, sometimes. The form owner’s ability to see identities depends on how you configured access and whether responders are authenticated.
- Anonymous-style setup: Respondents submit without providing an account identity that the Responses view can display.
- Authenticated setup: If responses are tied to signed-in user accounts, the Responses view may include identifying information (often a name or an account identifier).
- Organization context: Even if the owner UI looks anonymous, admin-level logging can still exist at the tenant level.
If privacy is the goal, you need to configure the form correctly and verify it with a real test response.
How to Create a Form That Doesn’t Show Who Responded
These steps assume you’re using the modern Microsoft Forms interface in a web browser (forms.office.com). Labels can vary slightly by tenant, but the core controls are the same.
Step 1: Open Microsoft Forms and start a new form
Go to https://forms.office.com, sign in, then select New Form. Add your questions as usual.
Step 2: Choose who can respond
Select Settings (top-right). Find the section labeled Who can fill out this form.

- Select Anyone (or the closest equivalent).
- Avoid options that force sign-in if your goal is anonymous feedback.
If you see options like Only people in my organization can respond or Specific people, those scenarios are more likely to tie responses to accounts.

Step 3: Disable collecting identity where available
In Settings, look for these toggles (names vary):
- Turn off Collect email addresses (when present).
- Turn off any option that indicates you’ll see respondent identity (commonly labeled record response name or similar wording, depending on tenant).
If your tenant doesn’t provide these options, that’s a sign your organization may enforce identity capture or that the form’s access policy is set to authenticated responses.
Step 4: Save and test with a practice response
Select Preview and test from an alternate browser session.
- Open the form in Incognito/InPrivate mode.
- Submit a test response.
- Return to the Responses tab and confirm there’s no name/account column for that test submission.
Testing is the only reliable way to confirm what your specific configuration does.
Quizzes: The Extra Ways Identity Can Appear
Quizzes (Microsoft Forms quiz mode) are still Forms—but quizzes often involve grading, feedback, and sometimes result delivery that can change what you see.
Scoring and result delivery
Open your quiz in Forms and check Settings. If you enable options that deliver results directly to specific accounts, you increase the chance that responses are tied to identities.
- Review toggles under quiz settings such as timing and result delivery.
- If you’re trying for anonymous feedback (not a graded assessment), consider using a normal form with question types instead of quiz grading.
Show correct answers and feedback timing
Options like when correct answers are revealed don’t automatically reveal names, but they can change how you manage response review. If you must grade, keep an eye on what appears in the Responses tab.
Different Hosting/Sharing Options (And Their Effects)
Your sharing context is often the deciding factor for whether Microsoft Forms behaves anonymously.
Forms shared in a personal Microsoft account (consumer)
With consumer accounts, anonymity depends on whether the responder must sign in. If the form is configured to allow anonymous-style access (for example, via “Anyone can respond”), the Responses view usually won’t show a name.

Forms shared to an organization (work or school account)
In Microsoft 365 work or school environments, administrator policies and access controls can change anonymity. If responders are required to authenticate, identity may appear in the owner’s Responses view.
- In Settings, avoid Only people in my organization can respond when anonymity is required.
- Confirm whether your tenant allows “Anyone” responses for Forms.
- Test with a non-signed-in browser session.
Forms embedded on a website
Embedding can work well for collecting feedback. However, embedding doesn’t override sign-in requirements. If the form is configured to require authentication, identity may still be captured.
- In Forms, use the Embed option to copy the embed code.
- Ensure the form settings allow anonymous-style responding.
- Test the embedded form from a browser session that can’t see your signed-in identity.
What Still Isn’t Fully Anonymous
Even with the best settings, Microsoft Forms isn’t a “no trace” system. You should distinguish between what the owner UI shows and what your organization can access.
Recommended Free Tools
Tenant-level visibility and admin access
If you’re using Microsoft Forms inside a Microsoft 365 tenant, admins can potentially access activity through admin tools and audit logs, depending on your organization’s configuration. That means privacy guarantees are not identical to consumer “anonymous” forms.
If you’re in a regulated environment, talk to your IT admin about what controls are available and what is retained in audit systems.
Browser and device clues
Even if names don’t show, responders might include identifiers in free-text answers (for example, “John’s laptop”) or submit signatures unintentionally. Anonymous design is about process design too.
Links and sign-in requirements
If you share the form in a way that forces sign-in, responses can become attributable even if you don’t explicitly ask for names. Settings like “Only people in my organization can respond” are the most common cause.

Test with an alternate account
Use a different browser profile and a non-signed-in session. Submit at least one response.
- Open the form link in InPrivate (Windows) or Private Browsing (macOS).
- Answer a couple of questions quickly.
- Submit.
Check the Responses view and inspect columns
Go to the Responses tab in Microsoft Forms and look for a column that indicates identity (commonly something like name, email, or account identifier).
- Confirm the test response appears.
- Confirm there is no identifiable field that maps back to a person.
- If you export responses to Excel, check whether identity fields were included.
Common Mistakes That Break Anonymity
- Accidentally enabling email collection: If Collect email addresses is on, you’ll collect identifying data.
- Choosing “Only people in my organization”: This typically forces sign-in and can reveal identity.
- Using a quiz configured for result delivery: It can lead to identity association depending on settings.
- Sharing the form to a restricted group: “Specific people” access is not anonymous.
- Collecting identity in questions: A required “Name” question or “What is your username?” defeats anonymity.
Troubleshooting: When Responses Show Names Anyway
If your Responses tab shows identities, you don’t have to guess. Use a structured check of settings and access.
You changed the setting after collecting responses
Microsoft Forms settings affect future submissions. If you flip settings, older responses may still show identity fields that were present at submission time.
- Update Settings.
- Submit fresh test responses after the change.
- Compare the new responses in the Responses tab.
You’re using a quiz mode that reveals identity
Switch between quiz vs form behavior can alter what appears. If your goal is anonymous feedback, replace the quiz scoring workflow with a standard form.
- Consider converting the quiz design into a normal form (recreate questions with grading removed).
- Disable identity-linked toggles in Settings.
- Test again from incognito.
Your organization policy forces identity capture
Some tenants restrict “anonymous” collection or require sign-in even when the UI looks like it allows broader sharing. In that case, your admin may control the real behavior.
Ask your IT admin about Microsoft Forms settings for anonymous access and any enforcement policies for Forms in your tenant.

If you need higher assurance than “no names in the owner view,” consider tools designed for privacy-first collection (and confirm their data retention and access controls). Regardless of tool, remove identity prompts and test with real anonymous sessions.
Best Value
For sensitive scenarios, also set a clear process: limit who can see responses, define retention rules, and restrict exports to Excel.
Bottom Line
Microsoft Forms can be anonymous, but it depends on configuration—especially whether responders can submit without signing in and whether identity collection options (like email address collection) are enabled. The safest approach is to configure the form for anonymous-style access and then validate by submitting a test response from an incognito session.
If you’re working inside a Microsoft 365 organization, treat anonymity as “not visible to the form owner in the Responses UI,” not as a guarantee against all tenant-level visibility. When privacy matters, confirm settings, test from the responder perspective, and align with your organization’s policies.

Does Microsoft Forms hide respondents’ names automatically?
No. It depends on who can respond and whether the form is configured to collect identity (such as email addresses) and/or require authentication.
Can I make a Microsoft Form anonymous for people outside my organization?
Often yes—if your tenant allows “Anyone” responses and you disable any identity collection options. Test with an incognito browser to confirm the Responses view shows no identifying column.
If I export Microsoft Forms responses to Excel, will identity be included?
It can. If identity fields (name/email/account identifier) are present in the Responses view, they may also appear in the export.
Can an admin in my organization still identify respondents?
Possibly, depending on tenant audit and policy settings. Microsoft Forms anonymity isn’t always equivalent to “no trace” at the organization level.
