What you get with free Microsoft Copilot
Microsoft says Copilot is available at no cost at copilot.cloud.microsoft. The free service supports questions, writing, brainstorming, summaries, real-time web answers, and image creation. In Microsoft Edge, it can also summarize and provide insights about webpages.

For personal accounts, the clearest difference is access to Copilot in Microsoft 365 desktop apps. Eligible Microsoft 365 Personal, Family, and Premium subscriptions provide the subscription owner with Copilot features in apps including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and OneNote. Personal and Family plans
A Family subscription does not extend the owner’s in-app Copilot benefits to everyone sharing the plan. Microsoft says shared members can use Copilot Chat at microsoft365.com with their associated accounts, but Copilot in desktop apps is limited to the subscription owner. Check which Microsoft account is signed in before assuming a shared plan provides app access.
Microsoft 365 Premium
Microsoft 365 Premium includes specified advanced AI features and agents, including Tasks, Analyst, and Researcher, along with an extended usage allowance. These are plan-dependent benefits, not unlimited use. Microsoft’s AI credits and limits guidance, last updated September 2026, says allowances vary by plan and feature and may also vary with the entry point and system conditions. Limits can change as models and features evolve.

Copilot for work or school accounts
Business Copilot access has two distinct levels. Copilot Chat is included at no additional cost with eligible Microsoft 365 business licenses. It offers web-grounded chat and features such as research, document or webpage summaries, image creation, and pay-as-you-go agents. Eligibility depends on the Microsoft 365 license and organizational setup; it does not mean every business feature is included.

A separate Microsoft Copilot license adds capabilities such as responses grounded in work data, work-data agents and reasoning agents, advanced features in Microsoft 365 apps, and additional administration and security capabilities. Features such as Teams meeting recaps may also depend on availability and configuration. Microsoft’s license options for Microsoft Copilot explain business licensing, while Microsoft’s license-identification guidance describes labels that may appear on the Microsoft 365 home page, including Copilot Chat (Basic), M365 Copilot (Basic), and M365 Copilot (Premium). How to check whether your account has the right access
- Confirm the account type. Check whether you are signed in with a personal Microsoft account or a work or school account; their plans and entitlements differ.
- For a personal account, check the plan owner. Review the Microsoft 365 subscription shown in your account dashboard and confirm whether you are the owner. Shared Family members do not receive the owner’s desktop-app Copilot benefit.
- For a work or school account, check the Microsoft 365 home page. Look for the Copilot access label, then ask your administrator whether you have an assigned Microsoft Copilot license and whether the relevant features are enabled.
- Verify the specific feature and local terms. Microsoft’s plans, prices, offers, and availability can vary by country, billing term, and license prerequisites. Use the relevant individual plan page or business pricing page for current local details rather than treating a price or feature list as universal.
Does Copilot use have limits?
Yes. Paid access is not synonymous with unlimited access, and Copilot is not one uniform feature set across every product. Individual AI credits and limits vary by plan and feature; limits may also depend on where a feature is used and system conditions. Business access depends on the assigned license and organization configuration. Confirm the current allowance for the particular feature you intend to use.
