Meta has described a longer-term vision for AI characters that could appear on Facebook and Instagram with profiles, bios and the ability to create and share posts. That was not a new product launch in January 2025. The profiles that prompted the backlash then were reported as accounts from an earlier 2023 test, and Meta said it was removing them after a blocking bug.
What did Meta actually say about AI users?
In a late-December 2024 interview with the Financial Times, Meta vice-president of product for generative AI Connor Hayes described a possible future in which AI characters would have account-like presences on the company’s platforms. Ars Technica reproduced his description: “They’ll have bios and profile pictures and be able to generate and share content powered by AI on the platform. That’s where we see all of this going.”

That statement outlined a direction Meta might pursue over time; it did not announce that a new system of AI accounts had just launched. Meta spokesperson Liz Sweeney told 404 Media that the interview was “about our vision for AI characters existing on our platforms over time, not announcing any new product.”

Users had rediscovered profiles that reporting identified as leftovers from a 2023 experiment. Some criticized their posts as low-quality or awkward, and Ars Technica reported examples of users sharing conversations they found troubling. These reactions show what some users encountered, not the results of a representative survey of Facebook or Instagram users.

Meta said the accounts were human-managed and part of an early AI-character test announced at Connect in 2023. The company also said a bug was interfering with people’s ability to block the profiles. Sweeney told Ars Technica: “We identified the bug that was impacting the ability for people to block those AIs and are removing those accounts to fix the issue.”
404 Media reported that the profiles still visible at the time had stopped posting around April 2024, though their chat features remained available. The January 2025 coverage therefore brought together two separate matters: old experimental profiles already on the platforms and Hayes’s description of a longer-term possibility.

How is AI Studio different?
Meta’s AI Studio is a creator-facing tool for making AI characters, not evidence that Meta had launched a general population of autonomous AI accounts. Meta said it launched AI Studio in July 2024. In a December 2024 post, the company reported that hundreds of thousands of AIs had been created since launch and set a goal for AI Studio to become a leading destination for character creation in 2025. Those are Meta’s own usage figure and target, not independent evidence of user acceptance or proof that the target was achieved.

What is known about labels and safeguards?
Meta’s April 2024 labeling announcement described an “AI info” approach covering a wider range of content, including material identified through shared industry signals or a creator’s disclosure. The company said particularly high-risk content could receive a more prominent label and noted that signal-based labels did not always match people’s expectations. Its separate April 2024 description of Meta AI and Llama safety processes cited evaluations, internal and external red-teaming, prompt and response filters, feedback tools, and notices that AI may be inaccurate or inappropriate.

Those company descriptions do not establish how safeguards worked on each experimental profile, whether every generated post would be clearly identified, or whether users would reliably be able to block and report AI accounts. Meta also reported that more than 23,000 people in 13 countries took part in its 2024 public-opinion research, and that 82% favored warning labels for AI-generated content depicting people saying things they did not say. That finding concerns labels for a particular kind of generated content; it is not a poll on whether people want AI accounts on social platforms.
Has Meta launched the broader AI-account vision?
The available reporting establishes the 2023 experiment, its removal amid the January 2025 blocking issue, and Hayes’s longer-term vision. It does not establish whether Meta later relaunched or materially advanced the specific idea of AI profiles publishing alongside human accounts. The evidence does not support treating the vision as either a confirmed rollout or an abandoned plan.

What should users look for if AI accounts appear?
The January 2025 episode highlights practical questions to ask about any social platform’s AI characters:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed

- Does the profile clearly say it is AI, and identify who operates it?
- Can people block and report it, and do those controls work as expected?
- Does it publish on its own, or respond only when someone prompts it?
- Are generated posts labeled, and can users understand where the content came from?
- What protections apply to younger users and others who may be more vulnerable to misleading or inappropriate interactions?
These are useful standards for evaluating a product if it appears; the reporting and company statements cited here do not provide a controlled comparison showing that one platform handles them better than another.
