Meta AI can be useful for everyday questions and creative tasks, but it is not a place to share information you need to keep confidential. Meta says it uses information people share in generative AI interactions to develop and improve its AI products. Its safeguards may reduce some risks, but they do not prevent inaccurate or inappropriate answers, and privacy controls vary across Meta AI surfaces and regions.
What “safe to use” means for Meta AI
There are two separate questions: whether Meta AI gives reliable, appropriate answers, and whether Meta handles information you share in ways you accept. On both counts, use it with limits. Treat prompts, files, images, and voice or camera inputs as information you are sharing with Meta’s service, and verify any answer that could affect an important decision.

Meta AI is available through several products, including the web, a mobile app, social and messaging products, and AI glasses. The information involved and the controls available can differ by surface: a typed question is not the same as an uploaded image or a spoken request that may involve a microphone, camera, or location permissions.

Does Meta AI use your chats?
Meta’s September 25, 2024 Connect post says: “We use the information that people share when interacting with our generative AI features, like Meta AI.” Meta also says it uses public Facebook and Instagram posts and comments to develop and improve AI products.

That disclosure about public posts has a specific qualification: Meta said the Llama 3.2 models discussed in that post were not trained using posts or comments with an audience other than public. It should not be read as a blanket statement about all Meta AI processing, later models, or every kind of information you share.
Meta’s text-generation system card says material used to teach generative AI includes publicly available and licensed material, along with information from Meta products and services. It also notes that public internet material may itself contain personal information. These statements do not mean every interaction is handled identically, but they are a reason to avoid sharing sensitive details in a prompt or upload.

Information to keep out of prompts and uploads
- Passwords, authentication codes, or financial account details.
- Confidential work documents, trade secrets, or information covered by a nondisclosure obligation.
- Private medical records or identifying details about another person.
- Any image, recording, or location detail you would not want processed by the service.
This is a practical precaution, not a claim that every prompt becomes public. If the information would cause harm or concern if processed by an online service, do not submit it.

Can Meta AI give unsafe or incorrect answers?
Meta says it uses filters on prompts and generated responses, evaluates and tunes its systems, and uses user feedback to improve them. Those are company-described measures, not proof of zero risk. Meta also warns that generative AI can produce inaccurate or inappropriate outputs.

Use Meta AI for low-stakes help, but independently check factual claims. For medical, legal, financial, or safety-critical questions, consult reliable primary sources or a qualified professional rather than treating an AI response as authoritative.
What privacy and account controls can you check?
Controls depend on the product and region. Check the settings in the app or device you actually use; a control on one Meta surface should not be assumed to cover every interaction on another.

Conversation history and deletion
Meta’s text-generation system card, dated September 27, 2023, says recent conversation history may be used to interpret a new prompt. It documents the commands /reset-ai to delete one AI’s copy of chat history and /reset-all-ais to delete copies across AIs. Because this is historical documentation, do not assume those commands are available in the current product. Look in the current interface for chat-history, deletion, or reset options.
Deleting a chat or stored copy of history is not the same as instantly changing a model’s learned patterns. Meta’s AI glasses guidance says deleting information does not immediately alter what a model learned; it also says the underlying information is deleted and no longer used for future training once deleted. The effect described is deletion of the information, not an immediate erasure of prior model behavior.

Microphone, camera, and location permissions
Meta’s Privacy Center says it does not use the microphone without permission and uses it only when a microphone-dependent feature is actively in use, such as voice chat with Meta AI. Check the operating system’s microphone permission for the Meta app as well as any in-app controls.
For AI glasses, Meta’s multimodal system card describes controls to view or download information provided to the AI, manage privacy settings, adjust location permissions, delete gallery media from Meta’s cloud, and turn voice controls off. The current interface may differ from that system card, so confirm the options on your device.
Regional data and advertising rights
Meta’s U.S. regional privacy notice, effective May 23, 2025, describes rights that may include access, correction, deletion, and opting out of targeted advertising, subject to jurisdiction and legal exceptions. It identifies Accounts Center and Ad Preferences as places for certain ad-related controls. These are not global guarantees, and changing ad personalization settings should not be treated as a way to stop all AI-related data use.

- Choose the right surface. Before asking, consider whether the interaction uses only text or also involves an image, voice, camera, or location.
- Remove sensitive details. Rephrase the request without names, account numbers, private records, or confidential material. Do not upload a document or image if you would not want its contents processed by the service.
- Review permissions. Check the app’s microphone, camera, and location permissions in your device settings, and review the relevant Meta AI controls in the product you use.
- Check history options. Use the current app or service interface to find conversation deletion or reset controls rather than relying on older commands documented for a prior version.
- Verify consequential answers. Confirm important claims with authoritative sources or qualified people before acting on them.
How to judge whether it fits your needs
Meta AI may be suitable when the task is routine, the information is not sensitive, and you are prepared to check the result. It is a poor choice for confidential material or decisions that require dependable professional advice. Your comfort also depends on the specific surface, permissions, and controls available to your account and region.
When comparing Meta AI with another assistant, compare the types of inputs it handles, how interaction data may be used for improvement, its history and deletion options, regional differences, and the limits of its safety measures. The available information supports those as useful comparison points, but not a scored ranking of assistants.
