Is Messenger Encrypted? What End-to-End Encryption Covers

Messenger says end-to-end encryption protects message and call content in encrypted chats. Check the conversation notice, understand reporting limits, and plan for secure history recovery when changing devices.

Is Messenger encrypted? Meta says default end-to-end encryption has reached the “vast majority” of global Messenger users, but not necessarily every user or every chat. Check the notice inside the conversation you want to assess. In an encrypted chat or call, Meta says message and call content is protected between the sender’s device and the recipient’s device.

Are Messenger messages end-to-end encrypted?

Meta began rolling out default end-to-end encryption for personal Messenger messages and calls in December 2023. In January 2025, the company said the feature had reached the “vast majority” of Messenger users globally—not everyone. The rollout can also reach individual conversations at different times, so a general statement about Messenger does not confirm that a particular thread is encrypted.

Meta says end-to-end encryption protects content from the moment it leaves the sender’s device until it reaches the recipient’s device. During delivery, Meta says it cannot see or hear the content, unless a user chooses to report a message. This is a claim about content in an encrypted conversation, not a guarantee that all information associated with the interaction is hidden.

How do I know if a Messenger chat is encrypted?

Look in the specific conversation for Messenger’s notice that messages and calls are protected with end-to-end encryption. Meta says chats may be upgraded at different times; the notice is the practical way to check a thread rather than assuming that every conversation has the same status. Meta’s explanation of Messenger encryption describes this in-chat cue.

What does encryption protect—and what does it not?

Message and call content in the encrypted conversation

In a conversation marked as end-to-end encrypted, Meta says the messages and calls are protected between the participating devices. The protection applies to the content sent or said in that encrypted conversation.

Reporting a message

Encryption does not stop a user from reporting content to Meta. When someone reports a message, Meta may review the reported content. Meta also says that if an edited message is reported, it can see the message’s previous versions. Meta’s launch announcement explains this reporting exception.

Recipients and device security

End-to-end encryption does not make a recipient trustworthy or prevent them from sharing what they can see—for example, by describing, copying, or capturing a message. Nor does it establish that a sender’s or recipient’s device is free of compromise. The protection Meta describes is between the endpoints; it cannot control what happens after content reaches a device.

Disappearing messages

Meta describes disappearing messages as a feature available in encrypted conversations. Their disappearance does not guarantee that a recipient has not preserved or disclosed the content, so they are not a substitute for trusting the person receiving it.

Can Meta read my Messenger messages?

For content sent or said in an end-to-end encrypted conversation, Meta says it cannot see or listen to it while it is being delivered, except when a user reports content. That does not establish that Meta sees no information at all: the reviewed product explanations do not give a complete, current inventory of metadata available for every interaction. Avoid treating content encryption as a claim that all surrounding data is hidden.

Will I lose encrypted messages when I get a new phone?

Changing devices can require a way to restore encrypted chat history. Messenger’s secure storage can preserve that history for access on other devices. Meta describes recovery methods including a six-digit PIN or storing a key in Google Drive or iCloud. If secure storage is not set up, messages and media may be permanently lost when the device is lost.

Be careful before deleting secure storage. Meta says deleting it permanently deletes the encrypted history, and the company cannot reset the security method or restore that backup. Its Messenger Help Centre guidance on resetting the security method explains the recovery limitation.

What protocols does Messenger use?

Meta says Messenger encryption draws on the Signal Protocol and Meta’s Labyrinth Protocol, and that it has published technical papers on cryptography and secure storage. That description is Meta’s account of its implementation; it does not by itself establish that Messenger is equivalent to Signal or provide an independent audit of Messenger’s security.
