Linux is not automatically harder than Windows—but neither is there enough evidence here to claim that a five-task test proved one easier. No test notes establish which tasks, computer, Linux distribution, Windows version, or results were involved. Rather than invent those findings, this comparison explains how to judge the everyday work that can make switching feel easy or difficult: installing software, updating, setting up the system, and getting hardware working. The Linux-specific steps below refer to Ubuntu Desktop documentation, not every Linux distribution.
What would make a five-task comparison fair?
Count more than clicks. A task can look simple until it requires a terminal command, an account, a restart, or troubleshooting for a device. Compare the same outcome on the same computer, and record what actually happens on the Windows version and Ubuntu release being used.

- Starting point: What was already installed, configured, or connected?
- Actions: How many meaningful choices or steps did the task require?
- Interface: Could it be completed graphically, or did it require a terminal?
- Requirements: Did it need an account, an internet connection, or administrator access?
- Outcome: Did the application or device work as intended?
- Recovery: What happened when the first attempt failed?
- Disruption: Did the task require a restart or a system configuration change?
Those observations support a useful comparison; general documentation alone cannot establish which operating system takes less time or effort.
Task 1: Installing an application
Ubuntu Desktop documentation describes installing additional applications through its graphical App Center and notes that Ubuntu comes with default applications for everyday use. That gives newcomers a graphical route, but it does not mean every application is available there or that every Linux distribution uses the same installation method. See Ubuntu’s application-installation instructions.
#1 Best Overall
For the comparison, use an application both systems can run and record how it is found, installed, and launched. If Ubuntu’s App Center does not offer the needed application, note the alternative actually used rather than treating a terminal as either universally required or never needed. A May 2025 Tom’s Hardware account describes one writer using both App Center and command-line package installation on Ubuntu; that is an individual example, not a controlled Windows comparison or a rule for all Ubuntu setups: Tom’s Hardware’s Ubuntu diary.
Task 2: Installing updates
Updating is routine maintenance in both systems, not a Linux-only complication. Microsoft describes Windows Update as an essential service for keeping a device secure, current, and working as expected: Microsoft’s Windows services documentation. Ubuntu publishes security guidance according to its release and support model; the relevant support status depends on the exact release and package: Ubuntu security documentation.

Compare the prompts, controls, interruptions, and restart requirements on the versions actually tested. Neither source establishes a head-to-head update time or a universal difference in user effort. A release-specific security-support claim should be checked against the Ubuntu version in use rather than applied to Ubuntu as a whole.

Trying Ubuntu or replacing Windows is a different task from installing an everyday app. Ubuntu’s desktop instructions cover creating bootable USB media and installing the system: Ubuntu Desktop installation guide. The installation documentation also addresses configuration situations involving BitLocker and Intel RST: Ubuntu guidance on Intel RST.
These are issues to check for on the specific machine, not proof that an installation will encounter them. Before starting, identify the computer’s storage configuration and any encryption or boot settings that could affect installation. If the goal is only to explore Ubuntu, creating installation media is a way to begin that workflow; it does not establish that the writer of this comparison tried it or completed an installation.
Task 4: Getting hardware and peripherals working
Installation compatibility is not the same as a broad guarantee that every printer, Wi-Fi adapter, graphics feature, or specialist peripheral will work. The Ubuntu installation material identifies some machine-configuration concerns, but does not establish universal peripheral compatibility. Check the particular computer and devices that matter, then record whether each one worked and what configuration it needed.

Task 5: Running Linux tools while keeping Windows
If the goal is Linux command-line tools or graphical Linux applications rather than a full desktop migration, Windows Subsystem for Linux (WSL) is an alternative to replacing Windows. Microsoft’s documentation explains how to install and use Linux on Windows: Microsoft’s WSL installation guide.
Best Value
WSL addresses a different need from testing Ubuntu as the computer’s primary desktop. Whether it is suitable depends on the specific tools and workflow required. It is a useful option to consider when the desired outcome is access to Linux software, not a verdict that one operating system is easier overall.
So, is Linux actually harder?
The evidence available supports a practical answer, not a test result: Linux difficulty depends on the distribution, the task, and the computer. Ubuntu offers a documented graphical app-installation path, while setup can involve boot media and machine-specific configuration. Windows Update is also a normal maintenance task, and WSL can meet some Linux-tool needs without replacing Windows. Without verified observations from the five tasks on named versions and hardware, a claim that Linux won or lost the comparison would be unsupported.
