KDE Connect can be used safely only with the right precautions: update every paired device, and keep the app off an untrusted network if any device may still be vulnerable. KDE says its local-network traffic is encrypted with TLS 1.2, but encryption does not prevent flaws in authentication. A critical KDE advisory published on 28 November 2025 documented a flaw that could let an attacker impersonate a previously paired device and inherit its privileges.
Why encryption alone is not enough
KDE’s privacy policy says KDE Connect transfers data directly between connected devices over the local network rather than through KDE or another third party, and that network traffic is encrypted using TLS 1.2. That is the project’s stated design; it is not a guarantee that every version, configuration, or network is risk-free.

Pairing establishes trust between devices. KDE’s protocol reference says devices should be paired before exchanging other packets and should reject packets from unpaired devices. But if a flaw lets an attacker bypass that check, encryption does not stop the attacker from taking advantage of the trusted relationship.
Check whether your devices are affected by CVE-2025-66270
In a security advisory dated 28 November 2025, KDE rated CVE-2025-66270 critical. The affected ranges listed in the advisory are:
#1 Best Overall
- DUAL-BAND WIFI 6 ROUTER: Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax) technology achieves faster speeds, greater capacity and reduced network congestion compared to the previous gen. All WiFi routers require a separate modem. Dual-Band WiFi routers do not support the 6 GHz band.
- AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
- CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
- EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
- OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.
| Implementation | Affected versions | Fixed version identified by the range |
|---|---|---|
| KDE Connect desktop | 25.04 and later, earlier than 25.12 | 25.12 or later |
| KDE Connect for iOS | 0.5.2 and later, earlier than 0.5.4 | 0.5.4 or later |
| KDE Connect for Android | 1.33.0 and later, earlier than 1.34.4 | 1.34.4 or later |
| GSConnect | 59 and later, earlier than 68 | 68 or later |
| Valent | 1.0.0.alpha.47 and later, earlier than 1.0.0.alpha.49 | 1.0.0.alpha.49 or later |
The advisory describes a failure to verify that device IDs in two discovery packets matched. An attacker who knew the ID of a device already paired with yours could impersonate it, bypass authentication, and connect with that device’s privileges. Affected privileges depend on the features you have enabled.
These are the advisory’s version ranges, not a live inventory of patched packages. Linux distributions and other package distributors may backport fixes without changing a version string in the way you expect. Check the update information from the app store, project release channel, or operating-system distributor you use; if you cannot confirm a package is fixed, treat it as unconfirmed rather than assuming it is safe.

- Dual-band Wi-Fi with 5 GHz speeds up to 867 Mbps and 2.4 GHz speeds up to 300 Mbps, delivering 1200 Mbps of total bandwidth¹. Dual-band routers do not support 6 GHz. Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
- Covers up to 1,000 sq. ft. with four external antennas for stable wireless connections and optimal coverage.
- Supports IGMP Proxy/Snooping, Bridge and Tag VLAN to optimize IPTV streaming
- Access Point Mode - Supports AP Mode to transform your wired connection into wireless network, an ideal wireless router for home
- Advanced Security with WPA3 - The latest Wi-Fi security protocol, WPA3, brings new capabilities to improve cybersecurity in personal networks
What to do before connecting on public Wi-Fi
- Update every paired implementation. Check KDE Connect on each computer and phone, as well as GSConnect or Valent if you use them. Install updates from the relevant official app store, project release channel, or operating-system package source.
- If patch status is uncertain, disconnect for the session. KDE advises stopping KDE Connect on untrusted networks such as airports and conferences, and/or unpairing devices, until you can upgrade to a non-vulnerable version. Follow that advice if any paired device is in an affected range or you cannot verify its fix.
- Keep firewall access out of the public zone. KDE’s UserBase guidance advises against using firewalld’s “public” zone for KDE Connect. Restrict access to a trusted home or private network where your firewall allows it; exact settings vary by operating system and firewall.
- Review plugins and permissions. Disable capabilities you do not use. Depending on your setup, these can include clipboard synchronization, file access, contacts, notifications, SMS, remote input, and custom commands. These features can expose or control more than basic device discovery, so enable only what you need.
- Consider whether devices can reach one another. Public hotspots that allow clients to communicate may expose devices to other users on the same network. If a hotspot isolates clients, KDE Connect may not discover or reach your other device. That is a connectivity restriction, not evidence that the network is safe.
Can a VPN make KDE Connect work on public Wi-Fi?
The KDE Connect project site documents VPN support for cases where a network, including public Wi-Fi, does not allow devices to communicate directly. A VPN may provide a route between your own devices, but it does not replace the security update for CVE-2025-66270. The cited project material does not endorse a particular VPN provider or establish that every consumer VPN supports this setup.
