Is It Safe to Remove rpcbind on a Linux Server?

Removing rpcbind is safe only for a verified NFSv4-only server or a host with no ONC RPC consumers. Inventory dependencies, mask it first, test every workload, and remove the package only after a clean maintenance window.

Sometimes—but never blindly. Removing or disabling rpcbind is generally safe only after you verify that the server has no NFSv2/NFSv3, NIS, or other ONC RPC workload. An NFSv4-only server or client can operate without rpcbind when every client, export, automount, backup job, and monitoring check has been validated. The safest sequence is reversible: inventory users, mask the systemd units during a maintenance window, test the workload, and remove the package only if the tests pass.

What rpcbind does

rpcbind is the directory service for ONC (Sun) RPC. It maps an RPC program number to the network address and transport where that program is listening. A client first contacts rpcbind on the server, asks where a particular program is registered, and then sends the actual RPC request to the returned address. The Linux rpcbind(8) manual therefore recommends starting rpcbind before other RPC services and restarting RPC servers if rpcbind itself is restarted.

That makes rpcbind a service-discovery component, not an NFS server and not an encryption or authentication layer. Its usual listening endpoint is port 111 on both TCP and UDP. Other RPC daemons can register additional, dynamically selected ports with it.

When removing rpcbind is safe

NFSv4-only deployments

The clearest supported case is a deployment that uses NFSv4 exclusively and has no unrelated RPC consumer. Ubuntu’s nfs.systemd guidance states that if a site will never use NFSv3 or NFSv2 and does not want rpcbind running, the correct approach is to mask rpcbind. Masking disables rpcbind and the NFS services that depend on it for NFSv3, while NFSv4 services can continue. In this configuration, rpc.statd does not run when rpcbind is masked.

“NFSv4-only” must describe the entire estate, not merely the server’s preferred setting. One older client, an automounter map, a backup appliance, or a recovery script that still negotiates NFSv3 is enough to make removal disruptive. Confirm the protocol version on every important mount before changing the server.

Hosts with no RPC workload

If the machine does not export or mount NFS, does not use NIS, and does not run another ONC RPC application, rpcbind may be unnecessary at runtime. A package can still be installed because another package lists it as a dependency; that relationship alone does not prove that a daemon must be running.

When rpcbind is still required

Workload or configuration What happens without rpcbind Decision
NFSv4 only, verified on every client NFSv4 does not require rpcbind for normal operation. NFSv3-dependent services such as statd are not used. Mask first, test, then consider package removal.
NFSv3 or NFSv2 mounts or exports Clients use RPC service discovery; mounts, locking, or status monitoring can fail when rpcbind is unavailable. Keep rpcbind running.
NIS (YP) NIS is an RPC-based service and may need rpcbind to locate its programs. Keep it unless the NIS dependency is removed and tested.
Other ONC RPC applications Applications that register program numbers with rpcbind may no longer be reachable. Identify and test each application before disabling.
Only a package-level dependency The package manager may retain or remove related software even though no daemon is needed at runtime. Review reverse dependencies and the proposed transaction.

Red Hat’s NFS guidance similarly treats blocking TCP and UDP port 111 as appropriate for NFSv4-only configurations, provided the environment has been validated. On an NFSv4-only RHEL 10 server, its procedure masks rpc-statd.service, rpcbind.service, and rpcbind.socket. Follow the units and NFS service procedure used by your particular release rather than copying a command from a different distribution.

Do not confuse package dependencies with runtime dependencies

Debian’s security documentation identifies NFS and NIS as common RPC users and warns that removing portmap/rpcbind is not always possible when other software relies on RPC. The CIS RHEL benchmark notes that packages such as libvirt and nfs-utils can depend on the rpcbind package even when the daemon is not required at runtime.

Before uninstalling, ask two separate questions:

  • Is the service functionally used? Look for active registrations, mounts, exports, NIS configuration, and applications that perform RPC discovery.
  • What will the package transaction change? Inspect reverse dependencies and the package manager’s removal plan. A removal may also remove or alter NFS utilities, virtualization components, or service files that you still need.

Inventory the server before changing anything

Run the following checks as an administrator and save the output so you have a baseline for comparison.

  1. Find mounted NFS filesystems: findmnt -t nfs,nfs4. Record the server names, mount options, and negotiated version. Also inspect /etc/fstab and every autofs map; a mount that is currently idle may still be configured for NFSv3.
  2. Review exports: inspect /etc/exports and any included export files. Confirm the versions and options your clients are expected to use.
  3. Check NIS and application configuration: look for NIS/YP settings, libvirt integrations, backup software, monitoring checks, and vendor applications that document ONC RPC requirements.
  4. List systemd relationships: systemctl list-dependencies --all, along with status for rpcbind.service, rpcbind.socket, and NFS-related units. A dependency edge tells you what systemd may start; it does not by itself prove that an application is making RPC calls.
  5. Inspect registrations: rpcinfo -p localhost. Capture the registered program numbers, transports, and ports before stopping anything.
  6. Inspect listeners: ss -lntup | grep -E '(:111|rpc|nfs)'. Include both TCP and UDP results and note dynamically assigned RPC ports.

If rpcinfo shows programs you cannot identify, stop the change and map each number to its owning service. An empty result is useful evidence, but it is not a substitute for checking scheduled jobs and remote clients.

Validate that an NFS environment is really NFSv4-only

Check clients and automounts

For every production, backup, monitoring, and disaster-recovery client, inspect /etc/fstab, autofs maps, orchestration definitions, and mount scripts. Make the NFS version explicit where your platform supports it, then test the mount. Do not infer the version from a server-wide default: a client can request an older protocol independently.

Check locking and stateful services

NFSv3 commonly relies on auxiliary RPC services for locking and status, including rpc.statd. If any workload depends on those services, masking rpcbind can break file locking or recovery even if a basic file read appears to work.

Test the complete workload

Mount and unmount each critical export, exercise read and write paths, run a representative backup, trigger an automount, and verify monitoring and virtualization jobs. Test from every client class, not just from the server itself. Keep the maintenance window open long enough for scheduled jobs that normally run only hourly or daily.

Disable rpcbind reversibly with systemd

Masking is stronger than stopping: it prevents a socket or dependent unit from starting it again. It is also easy to undo, which makes it the preferred first change.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Schedule a maintenance window and notify owners of NFS, backup, monitoring, and virtualization workloads.
  2. On a host confirmed to be NFSv4-only with no other RPC consumer, run systemctl mask --now rpcbind.service rpcbind.socket.
  3. On an NFSv4-only RHEL server, apply the release-specific vendor procedure as well; Red Hat’s RHEL 10 procedure masks rpc-statd.service, rpcbind.service, and rpcbind.socket.
  4. Verify state with systemctl is-enabled rpcbind.service rpcbind.socket and systemctl status rpcbind.service rpcbind.socket. “masked” and inactive are the expected results.
  5. Check listeners again with ss -lntup. Port 111 should no longer be bound by rpcbind, subject to any unrelated process using that port.
  6. Run the complete client and application test plan, then review the journal and application logs for mount, lock, timeout, or name-service errors.

Do not merely issue systemctl stop rpcbind and assume the change will persist. A socket activation request, reboot, or package update can start it again unless the units are disabled or masked.

How to roll back quickly

If a mount, lock manager, backup, or application fails, restore service before investigating in depth:

  1. Run systemctl unmask rpcbind.service rpcbind.socket.
  2. Start the units with systemctl start rpcbind.socket rpcbind.service.
  3. Restart affected RPC servers. The rpcbind manual warns that all RPC servers should be restarted if rpcbind is restarted so they can register again.
  4. Retry the failed mount or application operation and confirm registrations with rpcinfo -p localhost.
  5. Record which client or service required RPC, then remove the NFSv4-only assumption from your change plan.

Remove the package only after a successful trial

Once the masked configuration has survived a maintenance window and the reverse-dependency review is clean, use your distribution’s package manager to remove rpcbind. For example, Debian-family systems typically use an apt removal transaction, while Red Hat-family systems use dnf. Preview the transaction and read every package slated for removal before confirming; do not accept an automatic cascade that removes NFS tools, libvirt components, or another required service.

Keep installation media or a package cache available for recovery, and document the exact package version and unit state. Removing the package is less reversible than masking because reinstalling may restore files but not your previous configuration or dependency graph.

What disabling port 111 does—and does not do

Blocking TCP/UDP port 111 prevents clients from contacting rpcbind, but it does not disable every RPC-related port and does not turn NFS into a secure protocol. On an NFSv4-only design, eliminating port 111 can reduce an exposed service surface because rpcbind is not needed. There is no authoritative general percentage for a performance or security improvement from removing it. Treat the change as dependency reduction and attack-surface management, not as a guaranteed speed increase.

Firewalling port 111 is not a substitute for removing a functional dependency. If an NFSv3 client or another RPC application still needs discovery, the firewall will produce timeouts that can be harder to diagnose than a clearly running service.

Troubleshooting after masking or removal

  • “RPC program not registered” or mount timeout: identify the requested NFS version and check whether the client fell back to NFSv3. Restore rpcbind, then correct the client or server configuration.
  • Files mount but locks fail: investigate NFSv3 state and rpc.statd; a simple read/write test does not validate locking.
  • A service starts rpcbind again: inspect unit dependencies and socket activation with systemctl list-dependencies --all. Mask both the service and socket, and fix the requesting unit if appropriate.
  • The package manager proposes unrelated removals: cancel the transaction, inspect reverse dependencies, and retain the package while you redesign the dependent software.
  • Registrations disappear after a restart: restart the RPC servers after rpcbind comes back, then verify with rpcinfo -p localhost.

Bottom line

Keep rpcbind on any server that provides NFSv2/NFSv3, NIS, or another ONC RPC workload. For a genuinely NFSv4-only host with no other RPC consumer, masking rpcbind.service and rpcbind.socket is a documented, reversible approach. Validate every client and scheduled workload, monitor the change, and only then consider uninstalling the package after reviewing reverse dependencies. The distinction between “not running” and “not installed” matters: prove the runtime dependency is absent before making the permanent change.
