It is riskier, especially for browsing and sensitive accounts, but first check whether your exact iPhone still receives updates for an older iOS version. A phone that cannot install the newest major iOS release may still be eligible for security patches. Install every update Apple offers; if no relevant fixes remain, reduce sensitive use and plan to move to a model Apple currently lists for security updates.
What “no longer gets updates” means for your iPhone
There is no single cutoff that applies to every iPhone. A model may be unable to run the newest major iOS version while still receiving updates on an older branch. Apple’s security release list identifies current releases and eligible models, so check your specific device rather than relying on its age or a general “supported iPhones” cutoff.
For a dated example, Apple’s list showed iOS 27.0.1 for iPhone 11 and later on September 28, 2026. Apple also said it released iOS 15 and iOS 16 updates on March 11, 2026, for older devices unable to upgrade to the newest iOS. These are snapshots, not a promise of future eligibility; consult Apple’s security releases list for the current versions and models.
An older branch receiving some updates does not necessarily receive every fix available for a newer system. Apple explains that architecture and system changes mean not all known security issues are addressed in previous OS versions. The security releases list and Apple’s explanation of software updates for Apple devices are useful for checking both release eligibility and this limitation.

Why an unpatched iPhone is riskier
Security updates fix vulnerabilities that attackers may exploit. Apple has documented web attacks targeting outdated iOS: malicious content on a compromised website or a malicious link can put data at risk. That makes an unpatched phone a greater concern when used for web browsing, banking, account recovery, work, or private communications.
This does not mean every outdated iPhone has been compromised, and Apple’s published guidance does not establish a percentage chance that a particular phone will be hacked. Risk depends on the vulnerabilities, how the device is used, and whether it encounters malicious content; there is no sound basis here for assigning an individual probability.

Apple’s April 14, 2026 guidance says: “Keeping your software up to date is the single most important thing you can do to maintain the security of your Apple products, and devices with updated software were not at risk from these reported attacks.” That statement concerns the attacks described on that page; it is not a guarantee against every kind of attack. Check your model, install available updates, and verify eligibility
- Find your model and iOS version: Open Settings > General > About. Note the model name and the iOS version shown.
- Check for an offered update: Open Settings > General > Software Update. Install the latest update offered for your phone.
- Compare with Apple’s current release list: Check your model against Apple security releases, including releases for older iOS branches. The newest major iOS version alone does not tell you whether your phone can still receive a security fix.
- Recheck periodically: Apple updates the release list; a one-time check can become outdated as releases and eligible models change.
What to do if Apple no longer offers relevant fixes
If your device cannot install a relevant security update, treat it as a less suitable device for sensitive activity. Reduce its use for banking, work, account recovery, and private communications while you plan a transition to a model that appears on Apple’s current security release list. Before choosing a replacement, verify its current update eligibility and that it supports the apps and services you rely on; today’s eligibility does not guarantee a particular future support period.

If Lockdown Mode is available on your iPhone, Apple says you may consider enabling it when you cannot update. It is an additional mitigation, not a substitute for security patches or a promise that every threat will be blocked. Apple’s guidance still advises updating as soon as possible.
