Yes, AI-written code can be deployed—but not on the strength of its origin or a tool’s confidence. Treat it like any other code: understand what it changes, review it, test it, check security-relevant behavior, and release it through the same accountable controls. AI assistance is a reason to verify the result, not a substitute for doing so.
Can you trust AI-generated code?
Not automatically. A coding assistant can produce useful code, but a suggestion does not come with a blanket safety guarantee. Whether a change is safe depends on what it does, what systems and data it can reach, and what could happen if it fails.

One empirical study by Yujia Fu and colleagues examined 733 code snippets generated by GitHub Copilot, Amazon CodeWhisperer, and Codeium from GitHub projects. In that sample, the authors reported security weaknesses in 29.5% of Python snippets and 24.2% of JavaScript snippets, spanning 43 Common Weakness Enumeration (CWE) categories. These figures describe that study’s sample; they are not the probability that any particular AI-generated change—or all code from those products—contains a vulnerability. The findings should not be projected to every current model, prompt, language, repository, or deployment process. Read the study and its methods.
The same paper reported that providing Copilot Chat with static-analysis warning messages could fix up to 55.5% of the identified security issues. That is a result within the study, not proof that an AI-requested repair is correct or that re-running an assistant makes code secure. Review and validation remain necessary. What should you check before deployment?
Use a proportionate review based on the change’s behavior and impact. A qualified developer should understand the code and its context; automated checks can help find problems, but they do not establish that the change is correct or safe on their own.
- Establish intended behavior and boundaries. Identify what the change is supposed to do, what inputs it accepts, which components it can affect, and what data or privileges it can access.
- Inspect the implementation. Have a developer who understands the change check relevant details such as input validation, authorization, secret handling, dependencies, error paths, and configuration. Which checks matter depends on the code.
- Run the project’s tests. Use the established test suite and add or update tests for the changed behavior and important failure cases. Passing tests are useful evidence, not proof that every risk has been found.
- Run available security analysis. Use the security checks already appropriate to the project, such as static analysis where available. Triage findings, investigate fixes, and verify changes rather than accepting a tool’s proposed patch without inspection.
- Follow release controls. Keep the ordinary review and deployment gates, preserve accountability for approval, and use the project’s established recovery or rollback process if the change causes problems.
This is a practical application of lifecycle secure-development principles, not a claim that one identical checklist fits every codebase. The stricter the affected privileges, data sensitivity, or potential impact of failure, the more assurance the change warrants.

Does AI-written code need human review?
Yes, when it is headed for deployment, it needs accountable review by someone qualified to understand what changed and how it fits the system. That does not mean every suggestion requires the same amount of ceremony: a low-impact change and a change affecting authentication, sensitive data, or production access have different consequences. The reviewer should be able to assess those consequences rather than treating the code’s AI origin as either proof of danger or proof of correctness.

Are there risks specific to AI systems?
Some concerns apply when developing or operating AI models and systems; they should not be confused with risks that automatically attach to every code-completion suggestion. NIST SP 800-218A discusses possible manipulation across system code, model parameters, and data, including risks from unknown or untrusted training datasets, tampering with model weights or parameters, and injection-style attacks when user queries are not adequately sanitized.
