AI can be useful for homework when a child uses it to understand, practise or check work—not to replace their own thinking. Whether a particular use is appropriate depends on the child’s age, the service’s terms and privacy practices, adult guidance, the assignment and the school’s rules. Children should protect personal information and verify AI-generated answers.
What makes AI homework use safe—or unsafe?
“AI” is not a single product with one safety standard. A family or school needs to consider the particular service, the child, and what the tool is being asked to do. UNESCO recommends age-appropriate, educationally valid use and attention to privacy and learner agency; UNICEF’s guidance puts children’s safety, privacy and best interests at the centre.

- Age and maturity: Can the child use the service in line with its age and account rules, and understand how to use its answers cautiously?
- Privacy: What information does the service collect, how is it used, and what controls are available?
- Purpose: Is the tool helping the child learn, or producing work the child is expected to do?
- Supervision and school rules: Is an adult guiding use where needed, and does the teacher allow AI for this assignment?
These questions are related but distinct: a service may raise privacy concerns even when a use is permitted for an assignment, and permitted use does not make every generated answer reliable.

How can a child use AI without handing over the learning?
Use it as a tutor or practice partner
A child might ask for a concept to be explained in simpler language, request a similar practice problem, or ask for feedback on their own attempt. These uses can keep the learner actively involved. UNESCO’s 2023 guidance says: “Use GenAI tools to minimize the pressure of homework and exams, rather than to exacerbate it.” The guidance emphasizes learner agency; it does not establish that AI homework use generally improves learning outcomes.

Do not submit generated work as if it were the child’s own
Having AI write an answer, essay or solution and submitting it as original work can bypass learning and may break the teacher’s rules. Policies differ by school, class and assignment, so check the instructions rather than assuming AI is either always allowed or always banned.
Ask the child to explain the answer
After using AI, the child should be able to describe the reasoning in their own words and connect it to what they are learning. If they cannot, the response may have done too much of the work or introduced confusion. Use class notes, a textbook or a teacher to check uncertain claims.

Can AI give a child the wrong answer?
Yes. AI output should be treated as something to check, not as an authority. UNESCO advises learners to question accuracy and calls for educational AI systems to be validated. The cited guidance does not provide a general homework error rate, so there is no sound basis here for saying how often an answer will be wrong.

Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →- Compare facts, calculations and explanations with class materials or another reliable source.
- Ask the child to show the steps or explain why an answer makes sense, rather than copying a result.
- If sources, citations or quotations are offered, confirm that they are real and support the claim.
- For consequential or confusing material, ask a teacher or trusted adult to help resolve the discrepancy.
How should families protect a child’s privacy?
Before a child uses a service, an adult should review what it collects and how the information is used. UNESCO recommends informing learners about data collection and use; UNICEF identifies children’s data and privacy as core concerns. Avoid entering identifying, sensitive or confidential information unless the school or a trusted adult has approved the service and that use.

What age can a child use AI for homework?
There is no single age rule that applies to every AI service, country or school. Check the exact service terms and local requirements, as well as the school’s policy; these are not interchangeable. UNESCO’s 2023 global guidance proposed age limits for independent conversations with generative AI, and its 2023 communication described age 13 as a classroom threshold. Those are UNESCO recommendations, not a universal legal rule or confirmation that a service currently permits a particular child to use it. Terms and policies may change.
How can parents or schools compare AI tools?
UNESCO and UNICEF guidance supports evaluating the use and safeguards rather than assuming one product is best. These sources do not rank AI tools. Before choosing one, compare:

What is known about children’s use and potential benefits?
UNICEF describes learning support and accessibility for children with disabilities as potential opportunities, alongside risks to children’s rights and safety. It also notes that evidence about effects on children’s social, emotional and cognitive development is lacking. Potential benefits should not be mistaken for proof that using AI for homework improves learning generally.
UNICEF’s AI for children project page says more than a third of 9- to 11-year-olds in Argentina turn to ChatGPT for information; the page does not specify the year for this figure. It also reports research with 12,000 children and their parents or caregivers that found significant divides, particularly across the global South, in access, use, trust and risk exposure. That figure describes the research group, not a global prevalence estimate.
