Yes. A VPS with a public IPv4 or IPv6 address is exposed to automated internet traffic as soon as it becomes reachable. Port scans, requests for common services and failed SSH logins are routine background activity. Those entries are signals to triage, not proof that someone has entered the server.
Need a server to try this on? Antihost offers Linux VPS plans with NVMe storage, full root access and a 14-day free trial.
The useful question is not whether probes exist, but whether every reachable service is intentional and whether the logs show a successful login, privilege change, persistence or other abnormal behavior. Confirm your exposure, reduce it, harden authentication, preserve useful logs and establish a baseline for this particular VPS.

Internet scanners do not need to know your company, domain name or operating system before trying an address. Automated systems continuously sweep address ranges looking for open ports and familiar responses. A newly assigned VPS address may have been scanned before you finished installing the operating system, and the activity can continue whether or not you have published a website.
Most traffic is opportunistic. Bots test common management ports, web ports and mail or database services, then send a protocol greeting or a login attempt. Some scanners are measuring the internet, some are looking for weak default configurations, and some are attempting known attacks. A failed connection or rejected password shows that a request reached a service; it does not show that the requester bypassed authentication.

Public exposure still matters. Every listening service is another program that must be patched, configured and monitored. CISA’s enhanced-visibility guidance recommends scanning known internet-facing infrastructure to verify that no additional services are accessible from the internet. Treat that inventory as a security control, not as a one-time setup task.
What common log entries actually tell you
| Log pattern | What it usually means | When to escalate |
|---|---|---|
| Repeated connection attempts to many ports | An automated port scan or service discovery sweep | Escalate if an unexpected port is open, the rate changes sharply, or the scan is followed by successful access |
| Failed SSH passwords from many addresses | Credential guessing or password spraying against an exposed SSH service | Check for any successful login, reused credentials, or an account that should not permit SSH |
| Requests for common web paths or protocol handshakes on the wrong port | Generic internet-wide probing, often unrelated to your application | Investigate if the request produced an application error, exposed data, or a new process |
| A successful authentication event | Someone authenticated with a valid credential or key | Urgent if the account, source, time or follow-on activity is unfamiliar |
| New account, sudo change, service or listening socket | A configuration change that may be legitimate or may indicate persistence | Verify against your change record; treat unexplained changes as a possible compromise |
Read authentication successes and failures together. A high volume of rejected passwords is materially different from one successful login followed by a privilege escalation, a new SSH key and unexpected outbound traffic. The latter sequence requires incident handling, not merely a firewall rule.
There is no universal “normal probes per hour” number
No authoritative source establishes a single safe rate for probes on every VPS. The volume depends on the address range, exposed services, protocol, geography and current internet activity. A small server may see occasional attempts; another may receive continuous scans without either situation proving compromise.
Build a baseline instead:
- Record connection and authentication counts by hour for the first several days after hardening.
- Separate rejected authentication from successful authentication and from ordinary application traffic.
- Note which source networks, destination ports and accounts are normally involved.
- Compare the baseline after software changes, a new public service, an address change or a major traffic event.
Investigate a material change rather than chasing a fixed threshold. A sudden increase is more meaningful when it coincides with a newly exposed port, an exploit attempt that reaches an application, or an account event. A steady stream of rejected attempts with no successful access may remain background noise, although it still justifies stronger authentication and rate controls.
Use this triage sequence on a new VPS
1. Inventory every listening port
Start from the server itself and identify listening TCP and UDP sockets. On many Linux distributions, ss -tulpn shows addresses, ports and owning processes; sudo lsof -i -P -n can provide a second view. Windows Server administrators can use Get-NetTCPConnection -State Listen and map process IDs to services. Commands and output differ by operating system, so confirm the result with the platform’s service manager.

For each listener, write down its purpose, owning package, required exposure and responsible administrator. A port bound to 0.0.0.0 or :: is potentially reachable on every interface; a service bound only to a private interface has a narrower exposure. Also inspect the provider’s security-group or network ACL settings, because a host firewall and a cloud firewall can expose different paths.

Stop and uninstall unused daemons rather than relying only on obscurity. Disable test dashboards, sample applications, legacy file-transfer services and databases that should be reachable only by an application on the same host or private network. Remove plaintext protocols where an encrypted alternative is available. If a service must remain for compatibility, restrict its source addresses and document the exception.
Recheck the socket list after each change. A package update or a dependency can start a service again, so include enabled units, scheduled jobs and container port mappings in the review.
3. Restrict management access
Use host-firewall rules and provider-level ACLs to permit administration only from a controlled office address, VPN or management network whenever practical. Keep public access limited to services that genuinely need it. Default-deny rules are easier to reason about when they are paired with an explicit list of required inbound and outbound flows.
Test rules from an independent session before closing your current administrative connection. Keep a provider console or recovery path available in case a rule blocks SSH or remote desktop. Review IPv6 rules separately; allowing IPv4 while leaving an unrestricted IPv6 listener is a common accidental exposure.

4. Harden SSH and other administrative services
Use strong, unique credentials and prefer key-based SSH authentication. Where the platform supports it, add multifactor authentication or require administration through a controlled jump host. Disable default accounts, default passwords and obsolete protocol versions. Restrict which users may log in and which users may elevate privileges.
Changing the SSH port can reduce noise in unsophisticated scans, but it is not an access-control measure. A service that remains publicly reachable still needs current software, strong authentication and rate controls. Apply the same principles to web administration panels, remote desktop and provider APIs.
5. Review failed and successful authentication events
Linux systems commonly record SSH and local authentication in files such as /var/log/auth.log or /var/log/secure, or in the system journal. Commands such as journalctl -u ssh or journalctl _SYSTEMD_UNIT=sshd.service may help, depending on the distribution. Windows administrators should review Security event logs for logon successes, failures, account changes and privilege assignments.
Look for password-spraying patterns (one password tried against many accounts), brute-force patterns (many passwords against one account), successful logins from unfamiliar sources, logins at unusual times and use of accounts that should be noninteractive. CISA’s #StopRansomware guidance specifically advises logging and monitoring login attempts for brute-force password cracking and password spraying.

6. Preserve logs locally and centrally
Do not delete noisy logs simply because they contain rejected attempts. Set rotation and retention appropriate to the system, protect permissions so ordinary service accounts cannot rewrite history, and forward important records to a separate logging system. Use an encrypted or otherwise protected forwarding channel and restrict who can read or alter the central copy.

Correlate host authentication with firewall, provider-network and cloud-control-plane records when possible. A firewall record can show that a connection reached the VPS, while a host record can show whether a process accepted it. CISA recommends retaining and adequately securing logs from network devices, local hosts and cloud services. NIST SP 800-92, published September 13, 2006, remains a foundational reference for log-management planning; NIST SP 800-123, published July 25, 2008, covers server-security practices.
7. Re-scan from outside the VPS
After hardening, scan the public address from an external vantage point and compare the result with your intended service list. This catches provider ACL mistakes, IPv6 exposure, container-published ports and services that were invisible from inside the host. CISA’s guidance calls for port-scanning internet-facing infrastructure to ensure that no additional services are accessible.
8. Document the expected state
Keep a short record of approved ports, service owners, administrative source ranges, expected accounts and normal scheduled jobs. Future alerts are easier to judge when you can compare them with a known-good configuration. Update the record whenever you deploy an application, open a port or change an authentication method.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to tell whether someone actually got in
A probe becomes a potential incident when there is evidence of acceptance or follow-on activity. Review these indicators across the host and centralized logs:
- A successful login for an unfamiliar account, source address, key or time.
- New local users, changes to group membership, modified sudo or administrator policy, or a new authorized SSH key.
- Unexpected privilege escalation, shell commands, scheduled tasks, startup entries or system services.
- Processes, binaries, libraries or listening ports that do not match the documented baseline.
- Unexplained outbound connections, especially sustained traffic to unfamiliar destinations or unusual protocols.
- Changes to application files, web roots, configuration, credentials or audit-log settings.
- Log gaps, altered timestamps or disabled security tooling without an approved maintenance window.
No single indicator proves an intrusion; administrators and deployment tools can create legitimate changes. Verify each finding against maintenance records, package activity and the person responsible. Several related indicators, or any confirmed unauthorized access, should be handled as a security incident.
Best Value
If access appears successful
- Preserve relevant logs, process lists and provider records before cleanup. Export copies to storage the suspected account cannot modify.
- Restrict network access using the provider console or an emergency firewall rule, while preserving a controlled channel for investigation.
- Record the time window, affected accounts, source addresses and observed changes. Avoid repeatedly logging in with potentially exposed credentials.
- Rotate passwords, API tokens, SSH keys and service secrets from a trusted device. Revoke keys and sessions that cannot be accounted for.
- Assess whether the operating system and applications can still be trusted. For a confirmed compromise, rebuilding from a known-good image and restoring verified data is often safer than trying to remove every implant.
- Patch the exploited service, close the unnecessary exposure and rescan before returning the VPS to normal service.
Choosing a practical hardening approach
The right control set depends on how critical the VPS is and how much administration time you have. Compare approaches using attack-surface reduction, authentication strength, detection depth, response automation and operational complexity.
| Approach | Attack-surface reduction | Authentication | Detection and response | Operational trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Manual baseline hardening | Remove unused services and allow only documented ports | Unique credentials, key-based administration and restricted accounts | Periodic host and firewall-log review | Low direct cost, but depends on disciplined administrator time |
| Host plus provider firewall controls | Two enforcement layers and narrower management source ranges | Same strong authentication, with fewer reachable login surfaces | Firewall events can be compared with host events | Moderate configuration effort; rule mistakes can interrupt access |
| Centralized monitoring | Does not itself close ports, but exposes drift and new listeners | Can alert on unusual account and authentication behavior | Cross-host correlation, retention and alerting; possible automated temporary blocking | Higher setup, storage and tuning requirements |
| Managed security operations | May combine firewall administration, patching and continuous review | Policies and escalation depend on the service agreement | Human or automated response outside your working hours | Recurring cost and the need to verify access, retention and response responsibilities |
Automation should support, not replace, verification. An automatic block that reacts to every failed login can lock out legitimate administrators or hide a more important successful login. Define alert thresholds from your baseline, test recovery procedures and retain enough context to investigate an event.
Common mistakes that create false reassurance
- Assuming a new address is unknown: scanners discover address ranges automatically; secrecy is not a control.
- Counting failures without checking successes: the security significance changes completely when one login succeeds.
- Relying on a nonstandard SSH port: it may reduce casual noise but does not fix weak credentials or an unpatched daemon.
- Opening a database or administration panel temporarily: internet scans can find it before the change is remembered. Use private networking or a tightly scoped ACL.
- Ignoring IPv6 and container mappings: a service can be reachable through an address family or published port you did not include in the first review.
- Deleting logs after review: loss of history prevents correlation and can erase evidence of a slow intrusion.
- Blocking an address as the only response: automated sources rotate addresses; remove the exposure and strengthen authentication first.
A sustainable review schedule
During the first day, inventory listeners, apply firewall rules, configure strong administration, check both authentication outcomes and establish log forwarding. After each deployment, repeat the external scan and update the approved-service record.
On an ongoing basis, review alerts for successful logins, account and privilege changes, new listeners, unexpected outbound traffic and logging failures. Revisit retention and access permissions when the VPS handles sensitive data or becomes part of a larger production environment. A quiet log is not proof of safety if logging is disabled or incomplete; verify that expected events are still arriving.
The CISA guidance available as of October 15, 2026 treats visibility, secure logging and monitored authentication as core defensive practices. Used together, they turn routine probes into useful context: you can distinguish rejected background noise from a change that warrants immediate investigation.
