Open windows at night when outdoor air is cooler than indoors, reasonably dry and clean, and it is safe to ventilate. Use air conditioning when the night stays hot or humid, outdoor air is polluted, or opening a window would be unsafe. The right choice can change as conditions change overnight.
How to decide: compare conditions indoors and out
Night ventilation, sometimes called night flushing, moves cooler outdoor air through a home so it can cool the building’s surfaces as well as the air. The U.S. Department of Energy says it works best where nights are cool and breezy. Check the conditions rather than assuming nighttime air will help: if outside air is warmer than the room, opening windows can add heat. EPA heat guidance recommends closing windows when outdoor temperatures exceed indoor temperatures: EPA’s indoor exposure strategies.

- Temperature: Outdoor air should be cooler than the room you want to cool.
- Humidity: Air that is very humid can bring additional moisture indoors. AC can help with both cooling and moisture removal.
- Air quality: Smoke, pollution, or other outdoor contaminants can make ventilation a poor trade, even when it is cooler outside.
- Safety: Consider fall risks, health concerns, and whether the home can be secured with windows open.
DOE describes night flushing and the role of climate, breezes, fans, and outdoor conditions in Natural Ventilation and Cooling. EPA also notes that uncontrolled outdoor air can introduce pollutants and moisture in its ventilation guidance.
When opening windows at night makes sense
Use windows for cooling when the outdoor air is cooler than indoors, not excessively humid, and clean enough to bring inside. Moving air through the home can be more effective than opening only one window: cross-ventilation uses openings on different sides of a space, while a fan can help distribute incoming air. DOE discusses these approaches in its home cooling infographic.

Close the windows once the room has cooled enough, if the outdoor air warms, or if air quality or weather conditions worsen. The EPA’s heat and indoor-air guidance recommends night ventilation when appropriate and closing windows during smoke events.
When air conditioning is the better choice
Choose AC when outdoor nights remain hot or humid, or when clean, safe ventilation is not possible. DOE says ventilation is not an effective cooling strategy in hot, humid climates: Home Cooling. AC can also remove moisture from indoor air; DOE explains that lower air moisture can help people feel cooler in its cooling infographic.

There is no universal energy-cost winner. Window cooling can use little cooling energy when conditions cooperate, but the sources do not establish one savings percentage or cost comparison for every home. Actual results depend on the home and the outdoor conditions.

Smoke, pollution, and allergens
During wildfire smoke or another poor-air event, keep windows closed and prioritize cleaner indoor air with appropriate filtration. Air the home out after smoke clears if outdoor conditions permit. EPA outlines these steps in Strategies to Reduce Exposure Indoors. Allergies and nearby pollution sources can also make open-window ventilation uncomfortable or undesirable.

Falls, health risks, and security
Do not leave a window open if it creates a fall or other health risk. CDC/NIOSH cautions against opening windows when doing so could pose safety or health problems, including risks for people with asthma: Improving Air Circulation. Rain, noise, and the ability to secure the home also matter; EPA identifies these as considerations for ventilation and security in its power outage and indoor air quality guidance.
Quick Recap
A practical overnight routine
- Check the conditions: Compare indoor and outdoor temperatures; consider humidity, smoke or pollution, rain, and noise.
- Ventilate only if conditions are suitable: Open windows for a cross-breeze, or use a fan to move air through the home, provided the setup is safe and secure.
- Reassess during the night: Close windows when the room has cooled, outdoor air becomes warmer, or air quality or weather changes.
- Use AC when ventilation cannot do the job: This is the more dependable option when nights are hot or humid, cleaner outdoor air is unavailable, or opening windows is unsafe.
