Wi-Fi Calling on iPhone is not a separate free calling service from Apple: your carrier bills calls according to your plan, the number you call, and where you are when you call. Many qualifying U.S. plans include calls to U.S. numbers, but international calls and calls while traveling may cost extra.
How iPhone Wi-Fi Calling works
Wi-Fi Calling lets a supported iPhone make and receive voice calls over Wi-Fi, which can help when cellular coverage is weak or unavailable. Apple describes it as a way to call “in an area with little or no mobile coverage.” The feature requires both a compatible carrier and a Wi-Fi connection, and it may not be available in every country or region. The Wi-Fi connection carries the call, but that does not automatically make the call free. Carrier billing can still apply, just as it can for calls made over a cellular connection.

| Carrier | Calls to U.S. numbers | International calls and travel |
|---|---|---|
| AT&T | Its guidance says calls to U.S. numbers have no additional charge. | Calls to international numbers from the U.S. use international long-distance rates. Abroad, charges depend on the roaming option; International Day Pass covers eligible destination-to-destination calls in its stated coverage, while other options can use per-minute or package rates. AT&T Support |
| Verizon | Its FAQ says calls and texts to or from U.S. numbers have no charges on plans with unlimited talk and text. | Calls to other countries from the U.S. use international long-distance or pay-as-you-go rates. Its FAQ table lists calls back to the U.S. while abroad as free; calls to other countries use applicable international rates. Verizon Wi-Fi Calling FAQs |
| T-Mobile | On unlimited plans, calls to U.S. numbers and incoming calls have no fees. On plans without unlimited service, calls count against plan limits. | Calls to other countries follow the plan’s long-distance or roaming terms. T-Mobile says Wi-Fi data itself does not use or incur charges on its network; some locations and network types have separate rates. T-Mobile Wi-Fi Calling |
How to turn on Wi-Fi Calling on iPhone
- Open Settings and tap Cellular.
- If you use multiple SIMs, select the line you want to configure.
- Tap Wi-Fi Calling, then turn on Wi-Fi Calling on This iPhone.
- If prompted, enter or confirm your emergency-services address.
When Wi-Fi Calling is active, Apple says “Wi-Fi” appears in the status bar when you view Control Centre. Menu wording can vary by iOS version and carrier. Apple Support: Make a call with Wi-Fi Calling
What happens if Wi-Fi drops during a call?
Not every Wi-Fi network supports Wi-Fi Calling. If the connection is lost during a call, the iPhone may switch to the carrier’s cellular network if VoLTE is available and enabled. That is a change in connection, not a guarantee of a different rate; billing still depends on your carrier plan and the call. Apple Support: Make a call with Wi-Fi Calling

Emergency calls and your registered address
Apple says emergency calls use cellular service when it is available. If cellular service is unavailable and Wi-Fi Calling is enabled, an emergency call may use Wi-Fi. Setup may require you to register an emergency address. Apple Support: Make an emergency call from an iPhone
The FCC explains that an emergency call over Wi-Fi can depend on the registered address, which may not match your actual location. Keep that address current and tell the dispatcher where you are. Do not assume the registered address will identify your location accurately. FCC: Wi-Fi Calling
