For most modern web projects, routine testing in the retired Internet Explorer 11 desktop app is no longer necessary. Keep targeted compatibility testing only when a customer, internal application, contract, or supported legacy workflow still depends on IE-specific behavior. In those cases, test the organization’s supported Microsoft Edge IE mode configuration—not an unmanaged browser setup—and verify the application itself rather than assuming it will work.
Why routine IE11 desktop testing has ended
Microsoft ended support for the Internet Explorer 11 desktop application on June 15, 2022, for certain Windows 10 versions. That date does not mean every Internet Explorer component on every Windows edition ended at once: IE support and lifecycle depend on the Windows product and edition involved. See Microsoft’s IE11 desktop app end-of-support announcement and its Internet Explorer and Edge lifecycle FAQ.
Microsoft identifies Edge IE mode as the compatibility path for organizations that still depend on legacy IE websites and line-of-business applications. IE mode is supported through at least 2029, with Microsoft saying it will provide at least one year’s notice before retiring it. That is a lifecycle commitment for compatibility—not a reason to build new features for IE or a guarantee that a particular application works there.
When IE-related testing is still justified
- A customer or contract explicitly requires a legacy workflow, and the requirement has not been retired.
- An internal business-critical application depends on behavior that works only in IE mode.
- A supported workflow must be maintained while it is being migrated away from an IE dependency.
- A vendor or organization’s documented support policy names IE mode or a specific legacy configuration.
Confirm the requirement with the customer, application owner, or vendor. Microsoft’s general compatibility guidance explains why some sites need IE mode, but it cannot establish whether a particular application is supported or works correctly.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
What environment should you test?
For an active legacy dependency, validate Edge IE mode on the Windows edition and policy configuration your organization supports. Windows lifecycle, Edge configuration, and organizational controls all matter. Microsoft’s IE mode instructions describe adding sites to IE mode and note that managed devices may have the setting disabled or controlled by policy and an Enterprise Site List.
- Confirm the platform. Identify the Windows edition and device-management setup used by the people who rely on the application.
- Confirm the supported configuration. Ask the administrator whether IE mode is enabled and whether an Enterprise Site List or other policy controls which sites open in it.
- Reproduce the real workflow. Test the actual URLs, authentication, forms, downloads, printing, and integrations that users depend on, in the managed configuration.
- Check vendor support. Verify that the application vendor still supports the workflow and the organization’s Windows and Edge configuration.
- Record the boundary. Document what is supported, what was tested, and any migration or retirement plan so the exception does not become an undocumented default.
IE mode does not extend every service’s IE11 support
IE mode is a compatibility mechanism, not an override for a service’s own browser-support policy. Microsoft explicitly says it does not extend IE11 access to Microsoft services beyond their separately announced end dates. Its historical announcement lists the Teams web app, Azure DevOps, and Azure Portal among services that ended IE11 support on specified dates; those examples are policy history, not a current compatibility promise. See Microsoft’s service support end-date announcement.

How to decide whether to remove IE testing
| Situation | Practical approach |
|---|---|
| No known customer, contract, internal app, or supported workflow depends on IE-specific behavior | Remove routine IE11 desktop testing. Focus browser coverage on the browsers and versions your product actually supports. |
| A legacy dependency remains and the organization supports it through Edge IE mode | Keep targeted tests for that dependency in the supported, policy-managed IE mode environment. |
| Someone requests “IE support,” but the platform, workflow, or vendor support is unclear | Clarify the exact Windows edition, Edge configuration, site list, application owner, and business requirement before committing to tests. |
| A Microsoft online service is the dependency | Check that service’s own current browser policy; IE mode does not reverse a service’s IE11 retirement. |
Using screenshots to document a legacy workflow
A screenshot can help document a visual state or attach evidence to a bug, but it does not prove that a page’s behavior, scripts, authentication, or compatibility is correct. For a browser test, capture from the actual supported Windows and Edge IE mode environment; a screenshot service should not be treated as a substitute for that compatibility test.
Or skip the browser setup
For ordinary website screenshots, ScreenshotNeo offers a one-request screenshot API and an MCP server for AI agents. Cookie banners, popups, and chat widgets are removed before the shot; bot checks, blank pages, and failed loads are never billed. Its MCP server lets AI agents take screenshots. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000.
