If only a background should look translucent, put an alpha value in its background color; if the whole element, including its text and children, should fade, use opacity. When either appears not to work, first check the intended effect, the winning CSS rule, what is behind the color, and the browser versions you support.
Choose the right kind of transparency
opacity applies to the rendered element as a whole, including its descendants. An alpha color affects only the color value where you use it, such as a background. That difference is the most common reason text unexpectedly fades along with a panel.

For a translucent panel with fully opaque text, avoid setting opacity on the panel itself. Instead, set alpha on its background:

}Current CSS color documentation treats rgba() as an alias of rgb(). The traditional comma-separated form remains documented, and modern syntax can put alpha after a slash:

Debug why opacity or RGBA appears not to work

If the text, icons, or child elements also look faded, inspect the element and its ancestors for an

Find the declaration the browser actually applies
Inspect the element in browser developer tools. In the Styles panel, check whether the declaration parsed, whether a later or more specific rule overrides it, and whether a stylesheet rule is disabled. In Computed, confirm the final value. Chrome documents CSS inspection in its CSS features reference for DevTools.

Check what the alpha color blends with
An alpha color is blended with the content behind that color. If the background looks unchanged, verify that the element has a visible background, that the alpha is less than fully opaque, and that the underlying layer is the one you expect. Transparency does not create a new color behind the element.

Inspect stacking and ancestors
Any opacity value below
1creates a stacking context. If the complaint is that an item appears behind another element, inspect stacking behavior and ancestor contexts rather than changing the alpha value at random. Also look for opacity on a parent: it affects the parent’s rendered group and can make descendants appear faded even if they have no opacity declaration of their own. -
Verify the supported browser and syntax
MDN describes the opacity property and rgb() color function as widely available in current browsers. If you support legacy clients, verify the precise browser versions and color notation rather than relying on a broad modern-support statement. The Can I Use opacity table can help check opacity support; it does not replace testing the exact CSS and browser versions in your support policy.

Handle legacy Internet Explorer only when required
Historical compatibility references identify IE9 as the starting point for standard opacity and RGBA support. Older Internet Explorer versions used proprietary filter-based opacity workarounds. These are legacy techniques, not routine fixes for current browsers; keep them isolated to a documented support requirement and test them in the actual target browser. The archived references describe limitations, including concerns around alpha-transparent PNG images: archived opacity compatibility data, archived color compatibility data, and the historical W3C Wiki RGBA reference. Avoid obsolete vendor-prefixed opacity properties in current-browser stylesheets.
Check interaction and text contrast
- Invisible does not mean inactive. An element at
opacity: 0remains in the DOM and may still be focusable or respond to pointer interaction. If it should be unavailable, also manage its focusability and interaction state; transparency alone does not disable it. - Check text over its final background. Translucent text can lose contrast depending on what is behind it. MDN’s opacity accessibility guidance cites WCAG contrast ratios of 4.5:1 for ordinary text and 3:1 for large text; assess the rendered result against the actual background.

No. Current CSS color documentation treats rgba() as an alias of rgb(); both legacy comma-separated and modern slash-alpha forms are documented.
Does opacity: 0 remove an element from keyboard navigation?
No. It can remain focusable and interactive; handle focus and interaction separately if the element should be unavailable.
