Investors need to weigh the bank’s deposit and lending trends, margins, asset quality, earnings mix and post-merger execution against a current valuation—and the available figures here do not establish that valuation.
What does the evidence say about HDFC Bank’s business?
HDFC Bank’s FY2024-25 results show growth in profit and net interest income, alongside a deliberate effort to rebalance lending and funding after the merger with HDFC Limited. These are useful indicators of operating performance, not a forecast of returns or proof that the shares are attractively priced.

| Measure | Reported figure | What it helps investors assess |
|---|---|---|
| Net profit | ₹67,347.4 crore, up 10.7% in FY2024-25 | Profit growth over the financial year; it does not by itself establish future growth or the stock’s value. |
| Net interest income | ₹1,22,670.1 crore, up 13.0% in FY2024-25 | Income from lending and interest-bearing assets after interest expense, a central driver of bank earnings. |
| Net interest margin | 3.48% in FY2024-25 | A baseline for comparing later reported margins and investigating funding costs, asset yields and balance-sheet mix. |
| Gross non-performing assets | 1.33% of gross advances as of March 31, 2025 | A dated measure of stressed loans; investors should check later disclosures and other credit-quality indicators. |
| Advances and deposits | Advances grew 5.4% to ₹26,19,609 crore; deposits grew 14.1% to ₹27,14,715 crore in FY2024-25 | How lending growth compares with deposit gathering during the year. |
| Credit-to-deposit ratio | 96% at March 31, 2025, down from about 110% at the time of the merger | How the bank’s lending relates to its deposit base; changes should be read alongside growth, funding costs and management’s balance-sheet plans. |
All figures in the table are HDFC Bank disclosures in its Integrated Annual Report 2024-25. FY2024-25 ended March 31, 2025. They are reported historical results, not forecasts.

HDFC Limited, the mortgage lender, merged into HDFC Bank effective July 1, 2023. The bank’s current balance sheet therefore includes the former housing-finance business. FY2024-25 was the first full financial year after the merger, so comparisons with earlier years span a structural change in the company.

The larger combined balance sheet also made funding and loan growth important management issues. In its FY2024-25 annual report, then-Chairperson Atanu Chakraborty said, “We consciously calibrated our loan growth in FY25 to reposition the balance sheet.” The report described efforts to reduce the credit-to-deposit ratio and higher-cost borrowings. Deposit growth outpaced advances that year, but one year’s figures do not establish that integration or balance-sheet normalization is complete.
What should investors monitor in future results?
Deposits, funding costs and lending
Look at deposit growth alongside advances rather than treating either figure in isolation. Deposit composition—including CASA and term deposits when disclosed—and the cost of those deposits help explain whether the bank can fund lending without putting undue pressure on profitability. Track the credit-to-deposit ratio as part of that picture, not as a standalone verdict on the bank.

Margins and earnings power
Net interest margin (NIM) measures the spread between interest earned and interest paid in relation to interest-earning assets. The 3.48% reported for FY2024-25 is a historical baseline, not an expected future margin. Compare subsequent quarterly disclosures and look for explanations involving funding costs, loan yields and the mix of assets and liabilities. A change in margin can affect earnings even when the balance sheet continues to grow.
Asset quality and credit costs
Gross NPA is one measure of loans that are no longer performing, but the March 31, 2025 figure of 1.33% is not a current-quarter assertion. For an updated assessment, compare gross and net NPA ratios with slippages, provisions and credit costs across reporting periods. Consider the direction of these measures together; a single ratio cannot describe every aspect of loan risk.

Recurring income versus one-off gains
Separate recurring interest and fee income from trading gains and transaction-related items when comparing periods. HDFC Bank’s Q1 FY2027 results filing, for the quarter ended June 30, 2026, notes that the prior-year comparison included ₹91.3 billion in net trading and mark-to-market gains from a partial divestment in HDB Financial Services. That transaction gain can affect a year-on-year comparison; it should not be treated as ordinary, repeatable operating income.
What are the main risks?
- Funding and deposit mix: If deposits do not keep pace with lending, or become more expensive, funding could weigh on margins and the bank’s ability to grow on its preferred terms.
- Margin pressure: Higher funding costs, lower asset yields or shifts in balance-sheet mix may reduce NIM and affect earnings.
- Credit deterioration: Rising slippages, NPAs, provisions or credit costs may signal weakening loan quality and weigh on results.
- Post-merger execution: The enlarged bank must manage its funding and balance sheet after combining with HDFC Limited. The first full post-merger year is evidence of progress, not proof that every integration challenge is resolved.
- Earnings comparisons: Trading or transaction gains can make reported growth look different from underlying recurring performance.
- Valuation and opportunity cost: Even a sound business can produce disappointing investment returns if the purchase price already assumes strong performance, or if other investments offer better risk-adjusted prospects.
How can investors judge whether the shares are attractively priced?
Start with a dated share price and valuation data; then compare the price with the bank’s earnings, book value, return on equity, growth prospects and risks. For a bank, price-to-book value and return on equity can help frame how the market values its equity and what returns it generates on that capital. Price-to-earnings can also be useful, but earnings quality and unusual gains matter when interpreting it.
Rank #4
Compare HDFC Bank with other banks using the same reporting period. Include deposit franchise and funding costs, loan growth, NIM, asset quality, capital, returns and valuation. Merger-related changes and non-recurring items can make headline growth rates misleading when periods or banks are not comparable.
The available company materials establish historical operating results, but not a current share price, valuation conclusion or expected return. Without those dated market inputs, it is not possible to say from these figures alone whether HDFC Bank shares are a bargain, fairly valued or expensive today.
Best Value
So, is HDFC Bank a good long-term investment?
The reported FY2024-25 profit and net interest income growth, deposit expansion and lower credit-to-deposit ratio are relevant strengths to examine. The investment case still depends on how those trends develop: whether deposits support sustainable lending, margins hold up, asset quality remains sound, and earnings growth comes from recurring operations. The merger adds useful scale but also makes long-period comparisons more complex.
Whether the shares suit an individual depends on their time horizon, risk tolerance, portfolio and entry valuation. A long-term investor can use current quarterly results to test the operating case, then weigh it against a current, dated valuation and the risks above. Historical performance does not guarantee future returns.
