No immediate shutdown or subscription change has been announced. As of October 7, 2026, HBO Max’s subscriber FAQ says its app, content, subscriptions, and pricing are not changing right now, and current subscribers do not need to take action. The longer-term picture is different: after completing its acquisition of Warner Bros. Discovery, Skydance says its streaming products will eventually unify into a single service, but it has not announced when or how that will affect HBO Max customers.
Is HBO Max shutting down right now?
No. HBO Max’s current subscriber FAQ says there are no immediate changes to the HBO Max or Paramount+ apps, content, subscriptions, or pricing. It also says existing HBO Max subscribers do not need to do anything right now.

That is a statement about the near term, not a promise that the service will remain unchanged indefinitely. The FAQ says the company will communicate future price changes in advance, but does not specify what any later changes might be.

What did Skydance announce about streaming?
Skydance completed its acquisition of Warner Bros. Discovery on October 6, 2026. The combined company is named Skydance, and its announcement says its direct-to-consumer streaming products will unify “into a single service over time.” Skydance’s acquisition announcement describes a strategic direction, not a launch schedule or a detailed plan for moving subscribers.

Skydance has not announced the future service’s name or launch date. The available announcements also do not specify its price, content arrangement, bundle terms, or whether customers will have to migrate accounts. The FAQ says no bundle has been announced.
What might change for subscribers—and what remains unknown?
Several structures are possible: the services could remain in separate apps during integration, be offered together while still accessible separately, or eventually be combined into one service. Skydance has announced only the broad intention to unify its streaming products; it has not confirmed which of those arrangements it will use.

Does the HBO name have a future?
Skydance has not said whether HBO Max will keep its current name. The Associated Press reported that CEO David Ellison had suggested HBO could retain some independence; Ellison’s stated view was, “Our viewpoint is, HBO should stay HBO.” That is not a guarantee that the HBO Max app or brand will stay unchanged. The AP’s report says the future service’s name and effects on consumer costs and choices remain unknown.
The name has changed recently: Warner Bros. Discovery announced on May 14, 2025, that Max would become HBO Max again that summer. That rebrand announcement explains why another name change may be on subscribers’ minds, but it does not establish that a new rename is planned.

How large is the combined streaming business?
Skydance’s October 2026 announcement says the combined company has “200+ million streaming subscribers across platforms.” That is a figure for the company’s streaming services together, not a count of HBO Max subscribers. Skydance’s announcement does not break out an HBO Max total.
The Associated Press reported estimates from streaming guide JustWatch that Paramount+ and HBO Max together account for roughly 14% of the U.S. streaming market, compared with Amazon Prime at 17% and Netflix at 19%. These are estimates of market share, not subscriber shares; the AP passage does not state the measurement date or define the measure in detail. The AP report attributes the estimates to JustWatch.
What should HBO Max subscribers do?
For now, follow the current subscriber guidance: no action is required. Keep an eye on official account notices for any later changes to price, billing, app access, or subscription terms. Until Skydance announces concrete customer details, claims that HBO Max is closing on a particular date, changing names again, or becoming more expensive are speculation.
