Access depends on your platform, whether you already own an eligible version, and whether your console requires a separate online-multiplayer subscription. A seven-day console trial in November 2025 has ended, so it should not be treated as continuing free access.
On PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, plan for two separate decisions: buying or otherwise acquiring GTA Online, and maintaining the platform subscription needed for online multiplayer. PC players need an eligible PC version, but the current base-game price was not established in the available official listings. GTA+ is optional everywhere it is offered; it is not a substitute for a console multiplayer subscription.

The table separates facts that are often bundled together. A game purchase is a one-time or promotional storefront charge; a console multiplayer plan is a recurring platform fee; and GTA+ is a separate, optional Rockstar membership.
Why the “free” answer changed after the 2025 trial
Rockstar ran a limited PS5 and Xbox Series X|S promotion from November 11 through November 17, 2025. During that seven-day window, eligible players could try GTA Online without treating the promotion as permanent ownership.

Rockstar Games Customer Support stated on November 11, 2025: “Once the free trial has ended, players will need to acquire GTA Online Standalone to continue playing and the requirement for PlayStation Plus or Xbox Game Pass will be reinstated.” The practical result is that the trial was a past event, not an ongoing free-to-play model.
If an old article, video or social post says the console versions are free, check its publication date and whether it is describing that trial. A time-limited promotion cannot be used to calculate what a new player pays now.
How access works on each platform
PS5: game access and PlayStation Plus are separate
The US PlayStation Store listing for PS5 displayed an original price of $19.99 and a discounted price of $9.99 when checked on October 13, 2026. The discounted amount is a live storefront offer, not a guaranteed permanent price. Your account may see a different currency, tax treatment or promotion.
The same listing says PlayStation Plus is required for online play. Buying the standalone game therefore does not by itself remove the platform requirement. You need both an eligible game license and an active PlayStation Plus plan that permits online multiplayer.
- Open the PlayStation Store on your PS5 and search for the standalone GTA Online listing.
- Check the edition, platform label and current price before purchasing. Do not assume a PS4 listing grants the same PS5 entitlement.
- Read the online-play requirement shown on the product page and verify that your PlayStation Plus plan is active.
- After installation, sign in with the account that owns the license and launch GTA Online from that account.
Store prices and promotions can change without changing the underlying subscription rule. Treat the displayed price as the amount for your storefront at that moment.

Xbox Series X|S: an Xbox online-multiplayer plan is required
The Xbox Store lists standalone GTA Online for Xbox Series X|S and states that a console online-multiplayer subscription is required. The current US purchase price and a universally applicable tier name were not established, and Xbox subscription labels can change over time and by region.
For that reason, do not budget from an old article that names a particular tier. Open the Xbox listing while signed in to the account that will play, note the current game price, then follow the store’s online-multiplayer eligibility link to see which subscription is offered in your country.

- Confirm that the listing is for the current-generation console, not an older Xbox One product.
- Record the one-time game price and any sale end date shown on the page.
- Check the subscription notice attached to the listing and confirm that your account’s current plan includes console online multiplayer.
Because both the game price and plan names are storefront-specific, the local Xbox page is the authoritative place to verify the total before checkout.
PC: no console multiplayer plan, but the game is still not automatically free
PC access requires an eligible PC version and the hardware, launcher and account setup that version specifies. Rockstar’s GTA+ eligibility guidance identifies PC Enhanced as a supported version. That confirms support for the membership on that edition; it does not establish a free base-game license.
The current PC base-game price was not established in the official results available for this article. Check the storefront you intend to use immediately before buying and confirm whether it sells PC Enhanced, PC Legacy, or a bundle. Edition names matter because features and membership benefits can differ between versions.

Unlike a console, a PC does not impose PlayStation Plus or an Xbox console multiplayer subscription. You still pay for the game unless a clearly stated promotion grants it, and you need a working internet connection and the required Rockstar account or launcher sign-in.

To estimate your first-year cost, add the local one-time game price to 12 months of any required console multiplayer plan. Add GTA+ only if you want its membership benefits. Do not count a temporary game discount as a recurring saving, and do not treat a monthly membership price as the cost of owning the game.
Is GTA+ required?
No. GTA+ is an optional recurring membership separate from both the game license and the console online-multiplayer subscription. You can play ordinary GTA Online without subscribing to GTA+ when you have the required game access and, on console, the required platform multiplayer plan.
Rockstar lists GTA+ support for PS5, Xbox Series X|S and PC Enhanced. It is not available for PS4, Xbox One or PC Legacy benefits, and PC availability can vary by region. The US PC listing showed $7.99 per month at the time checked; that is not a globally fixed price.
GTA+ also does not replace PlayStation Plus or the Xbox online-multiplayer requirement. A membership benefit and a platform network subscription solve different problems: GTA+ concerns Rockstar’s optional benefits, while the console plan authorizes online multiplayer on that platform.

How to check your real total before purchasing
- Identify the exact platform and edition. Write down PS5, Xbox Series X|S, PC Enhanced or another edition shown by your storefront. Do not compare a current-generation standalone listing with an older console product.
- Open the local first-party store. Prices, taxes, currencies, promotions and subscription eligibility are region-dependent. A US price is not a promise for another country.
- Separate the line items. Record the game purchase, the required console multiplayer plan if applicable, and any optional GTA+ membership in different columns.
- Check whether a promotion has an end date. A sale price or trial can disappear while the product remains available at its regular price.
- Confirm renewal terms. Console plans and GTA+ are recurring services. Review the renewal amount and cancellation method before confirming payment.
- Verify account ownership. The account buying the game must be the account, or an authorized console-sharing account, that launches it. Switching accounts can make a purchased license appear unavailable.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Confusing a free trial with permanent free access
The 2025 trial had fixed dates and ended. If you can still launch the game because of a previously purchased license, a shared console license or another promotion, that personal situation does not prove that new players receive permanent free access.
Counting only the game price
On console, the checkout price for the game is only one part of the cost of playing online. Check the multiplayer requirement on the same platform page before deciding that a sale price is your full cost.
Assuming GTA+ is mandatory
GTA+ is a choice, not an entry ticket. Leaving it out lowers your recurring cost but also means you will not receive benefits tied to that membership.
Using the wrong generation or edition
PS4, Xbox One and PC Legacy references can lead to the wrong entitlement or unsupported membership benefits. Read the platform and edition labels in the current listing rather than relying on a search result headline.
Applying another country’s price
The figures shown above include a US PS5 storefront snapshot and a US PC GTA+ display. Currency conversion, taxes and local promotions can produce a different total. Always price the purchase in the country attached to your account.

Which setup is cheapest?
If you already own a gaming PC
Compare the local PC game price with the recurring console multiplayer cost you would otherwise pay. PC has no PlayStation Plus or Xbox console multiplayer charge, but you still need to buy an eligible version and meet its technical requirements. Because the current PC price was not established here, use your local listing for the final comparison.
If you already own a PS5
Use the PS5 standalone listing and add an active PlayStation Plus plan. The displayed PS5 sale can reduce the initial purchase, but it does not remove the online-play requirement.
If you already own an Xbox Series X|S
Check the Series X|S standalone listing and the subscription eligibility attached to your account. Since both the Xbox game price and tier naming can vary, the local store is more reliable than a price quoted elsewhere.
If you only want to try the game
Do not plan around the ended November 2025 trial. Wait for a clearly labeled current promotion in your local store, and read its dates and post-trial terms before starting.
Bottom line
GTA Online is a paid-access game in normal circumstances, not a permanently free console title. PS5 requires the game plus PlayStation Plus for online play; Xbox Series X|S requires the game plus an Xbox console online-multiplayer subscription; and PC requires an eligible purchased version without either console subscription. GTA+ is optional and separately billed. Check your local storefront on the day you buy, because prices, promotions, subscription names and regional availability can change.
