But that personnel link does not confirm that GTA 6 is borrowing any particular mechanic. Rockstar’s published material details how Max Payne 3 approached shooting and cinematic presentation; current reporting on GTA 6 describes efforts to give missions more than one route or approach. Those are useful points of comparison, not proof of a direct transfer.
What Rockstar documented about Max Payne 3
Rockstar’s Max Payne 3 design and technology page describes a series exploring the game’s “targeting mechanics, movement and animation, enemy intelligence and other technical design innovations.” That identifies the kinds of systems Rockstar highlighted, but it does not establish that GTA 6 uses the same systems.

Rockstar also emphasized how Max Payne 3 connects presentation and action. Its cinematic-design page describes the game as moving “seamlessly from cutscene to gunplay and from one chapter to the next.” This is Rockstar’s own description of Max Payne 3, not an independent assessment or a statement about GTA 6.

What is known about GTA 6’s mission design
In a 2026 interview report, GamesRadar quoted Rob Nelson, Rockstar North co-studio lead, saying that the team made “a very conscious effort to open things up where possible, without compromising the quality of the experience.” The discussion concerns giving GTA 6 missions multiple routes and approaches where possible, while accounting for narrative requirements. Nelson’s comment describes a current design goal; it does not credit Max Payne 3 as its source.
#1 Best Overall
- Developed by Rockstar Games for a seamless, highly detailed, cinematic experience
- Advanced Bullet Time and Shootdodge and Final Kill-cam mechanics for stylish shooting action
- Cutting edge aiming, targeting and animation processes for precise, fluid gunplay
- A dark, twisted story chronicling the return of Max Payne, one of the most iconic characters in videogames
Where the games can—and cannot—be compared
| Design area | What the sources establish about Max Payne 3 | What the sources establish about GTA 6 |
|---|---|---|
| Targeting and movement | Rockstar highlights targeting mechanics and movement in its design-series description. | The cited GTA 6 reporting does not confirm that these systems match Max Payne 3. |
| Animation and combat presentation | Rockstar lists animation among the game’s design topics and describes its cinematic presentation. | The cited GTA 6 reporting does not establish a shared animation or gunplay system. |
| Cutscenes and gameplay | Rockstar says Max Payne 3 moves from cutscene to gunplay and between chapters. | The cited reporting does not describe GTA 6’s cutscene-to-gameplay transitions as derived from Max Payne 3. |
| Mission structure | The cited Rockstar design descriptions do not make a claim about GTA 6-style mission routes. | Nelson’s reported comments describe efforts to open missions to multiple routes and approaches where possible, balanced against story needs. |
The comparison is therefore strongest at the level of Rockstar’s design interests and creative history. It would go beyond the available evidence to say GTA 6 has Max Payne 3’s bullet time, shoot-dodge, gunplay, or animation system.
The personnel connection is context, not confirmation
A September 2026 English translation of a Famitsu interview identifies Nelson as having worked on Max Payne 3 and as being involved in GTA VI. That makes a shared personnel connection concrete. It does not show that Nelson—or Rockstar more broadly—carried a specific Max Payne 3 mechanic into GTA 6. A developer’s involvement across projects is not, by itself, evidence of a feature’s origin.
Rank #2
So, is GTA 6 taking notes from Max Payne 3?
Possibly in the broad sense that Rockstar’s experience and people span both games, but no cited source confirms direct borrowing of a particular feature. Rockstar’s published material makes Max Payne 3 a useful reference for its approach to targeting, movement, animation, enemy intelligence, and cinematic flow. The current GTA 6 reporting supports a separate, specific point about mission flexibility. Until Rockstar or an attributable report explicitly connects a GTA 6 feature to Max Payne 3, claims of shared mechanics should be treated as speculation.
