Is Grok Using Claude? How to Check Which Model Is Answering

Consumer Grok is documented as xAI-powered, while grok-build can connect to Anthropic’s Claude API. Here’s how to interpret model labels and API IDs without confusing them with hidden routing.

Consumer Grok is not documented as Claude-powered. X describes Grok as powered by xAI’s large language model. Claude appears in a separate command-line project, grok-build, which can be configured to send requests to Anthropic’s API. That does not make Claude a built-in model option in the Grok app.

You can use a model label or selector shown in your own Grok interface as evidence of the choice presented there. But the official material reviewed does not establish a current, universal set of consumer-app steps for finding it—or prove hidden routing for a particular answer.

Is Grok using Claude?

X describes Grok as an assistant powered by xAI’s large language model, not Claude. Its Grok help page explains the consumer assistant, while xAI’s model documentation lists xAI’s Grok models. Neither establishes Claude as the underlying model for consumer Grok on X, grok.com, or its mobile apps.

Claude is mentioned in a different context in xAI’s Grok 4.1 announcement: Claude Sonnet 3.7 was used as a judge in an EQ-Bench evaluation. Using Claude to evaluate a benchmark is not evidence that Grok 4.1—or consumer Grok—runs on Claude. See the Grok 4.1 announcement.

How to use Claude through grok-build

If by “Grok’s Claude-powered features” you mean making a Claude request from a Grok-related tool, the relevant option is the separate grok-build CLI—not a documented consumer Grok setting. Its guide describes support for custom model endpoints and multiple API backends, including Anthropic’s Messages API. The Claude example configures an Anthropic model, points the endpoint at Anthropic, selects the Messages backend, and supplies Anthropic-specific headers.

That setup requires configuring the CLI to use Anthropic’s service and credentials. It is a way to connect a command-line client to Claude, not proof that a prompt in grok.com or the X app can switch Grok to Claude. Follow the project’s own grok-build guide for its configuration details.

How to check which Grok model is answering

In a consumer interface, inspect the model name or selection control if one is displayed. Treat that as evidence of the model choice the interface presents, not independent proof of every backend detail for a specific response. The reviewed official sources do not establish a current selector location, availability by account, or identical controls across web and mobile, so there is no reliable universal click path to give here.

xAI’s developer API documentation is more explicit: it lists model identifiers and aliases. Its model page, last updated September 21, 2026, lists Grok 4.7 as the flagship model for code and other general uses, and distinguishes date-pinned IDs from unversioned aliases that can advance to a newer stable version. Those API identifiers apply to API requests; they are not instructions for selecting a model in the consumer app. Check the current xAI model documentation because model names and aliases can change.

If your consumer interface does not show a model label or selector, the available sources do not provide a verified way to reveal the active model. Asking Grok to identify itself is not reliable proof: X warns that Grok can give confident but inaccurate information and recommends independently verifying responses.

Why search does not identify the model

Model choice and search are separate layers. xAI says its API Grok has no access to real-time events unless Web Search or X Search is enabled. X says consumer Grok can decide whether to search public posts and the live web. Search may supply current material for an answer, but it does not establish which model generated the response.

For a model-related claim—or any answer that matters—check the visible model information where available and verify the substance against dependable sources. A response’s own claim about its model identity is not authoritative evidence.

Access, plans, and privacy

X’s consumer overview describes Grok as free to start and says paid SuperGrok plans offer higher usage limits and additional features. Plan details can change; consult the official Grok overview for current availability and terms rather than relying on an old price or feature list.

If you try a prompt to compare answers, avoid entering personal, sensitive, or confidential information. X documents a control to opt out of using interactions, inputs, and results to train or fine-tune Grok. Its documented path is Privacy & Safety → Data sharing and personalization → Grok & Third-party Collaborators → Data Sharing. X notes that feedback submissions may still permit the conversation and related data to be used, and separately documents a personalization control. Check X’s Grok privacy guidance for current labels and policy details.
