Yes: the primary Google Wifi point acts as the router in a mesh network. It connects to your modem by Ethernet and routes your home network’s internet connection. You still need an internet plan from an ISP, and extra Google Wifi points extend the compatible mesh rather than acting as universal boosters for any router.
What “router” means for Google Wifi
Google describes Google Wifi as a home mesh Wi-Fi system that replaces a traditional router. In a typical setup, the path is ISP service → modem → primary Google Wifi point → home devices and additional mesh points. The primary point is the router; the modem and internet service are still required. Google’s overview of Google Wifi explains the system’s role and requirements.
Additional points cooperate with the primary point to extend the same network, and devices can roam between points. A point can be configured as the primary router or used as a compatible mesh point, depending on the setup. This is different from plugging a generic repeater into an unrelated router.
Can Google Wifi extend a router from another brand?
No. Google says Google Wifi cannot be used as an extender or repeater for an existing third-party router. It creates a mesh with supported Google Wifi and Nest Wifi devices instead. Google’s compatibility guidance also states that Nest Wifi Pro is not compatible with the Google Wifi mesh.

What coverage and performance should you expect?
Google lists coverage of up to 1,500 square feet per Google Wifi point in its technical specifications; this is a published estimate, not a guarantee for every home. Building materials, size, layout and point placement affect signal coverage, while the internet service from your provider affects available internet speed. - Place points in open locations, roughly one to two rooms apart, following Google’s placement guidance.
- Adding points does not guarantee better performance: Google advises against using more than five mesh devices because extra devices may degrade performance.
- Google Wifi is a dual-band AC1200, Wi-Fi 5 system supporting 802.11a/b/g/n/ac. Each point has two Gigabit Ethernet ports, according to Google’s specifications.
Can Google Wifi points use Ethernet?
Yes. Compatible Google Wifi points can connect wirelessly or be hardwired. Ethernet backhaul can be useful when wiring is available, but the network layout matters: Google’s guidance places additional points downstream of the Wifi router and recommends an unmanaged switch, or a managed switch configured appropriately, to avoid certain routing and network-loop problems. Follow Google’s Ethernet wiring and topology instructions rather than assuming any arrangement of ports and switches will work.
What you need to set it up
Google lists internet service, a modem, a Google Account, a supported mobile device and the current Google Home app as setup requirements. The primary point connects to the modem with the supplied Ethernet cable. The app is used to set up and manage the network. Google’s Google Wifi overview provides the current setup requirements.
