Reports that Google is testing a larger three-dot menu icon on ads are not supported by Google’s own published material or by the coverage we could check. Google does document the three-dot menu on ads as the route to ad information and controls, and it has recently added a new panel reachable from that menu. Neither source describes an icon-size experiment.
What the three-dot menu does today
The three-dot menu sits beside an ad and gives people a way to learn more about the ad and the advertiser. Google’s March 29, 2023 announcement said its Ads Transparency Center would begin rolling out globally. The center can be reached directly or through My Ad Center, and the menu beside an ad is one of the entry points. According to that announcement, the center shows which ads appeared in a region, the last date an ad ran, and the ad format.

Google also said, in the same 2023 announcement, that “More than 30 million people interact with Google’s ads transparency and control menus every day.” This is Google’s own figure from 2023. It was not independently measured, and it should not be read as a current count.
The 2026 AI disclosure panel
In a July 9, 2026 announcement, Google said a “How this ad was made” section in My Ad Center would show whether an ad was created or edited with AI. Google said the panel is accessible from the three-dot menu or the info icon on ads across Search, YouTube, and Discover. Search Engine Land’s coverage of the same date describes the menu and info icon as the access route to that panel.

The disclosure is added automatically when advertisers use Google’s generative AI ad tools. For ads made with other tools, Google introduced a control that lets advertisers indicate AI use. Coverage of this change explains why the menu is getting more attention, but it describes what the menu opens, not how the menu looks.
What is not established about a larger icon
We found no dated screenshot, direct observer report, named platform, geographic scope, or rollout status for a larger three-dot icon on ads. Neither Google’s 2023 nor its 2026 announcement mentions icon size, and the July 2026 coverage describes the menu only as an access point.

That gap matters because a feature description is not evidence of an experiment. A menu can gain a new panel without its icon changing, and an icon can change in a test that no company announces. Treat the claim as unconfirmed until a source shows it.

How to check a report like this yourself
If you see a screenshot of a larger icon, test the claim before sharing it:
- Note the surface (Search, YouTube, Discover, or a partner site) and the device and app version.
- Compare the icon’s size and position with an ad from the same surface and day, since layout changes happen often.
- Check whether the menu contents also changed, such as the presence of the “How this ad was made” entry.
- Look for a dated source, ideally a company statement or a reporter who saw the change on more than one account.
- Consider whether it is a limited experiment or a general release. A single screenshot cannot tell you which.
Without those details, a single image shows only that the icon looked different on one screen at one time.
