Google has not confirmed that the reported Gemini access change is already in effect. A TechRadar report dated October 4, 2026, says that starting October 9, people without a Google AI plan would lose access to Gemini Flash and Pro, while AI Plus subscribers would lose Pro access. But Google’s Gemini Apps Help page currently lists Flash-Lite, Flash, and Pro as available without an AI plan. Check the model picker and any in-app notice on your account, and consult Google’s live help page before assuming the change applies to you.
What Gemini models are free, and when is access supposed to change?
The report describes a planned change, not a confirmed rollout. According to TechRadar’s October 4, 2026 report, the change is scheduled to begin October 9, 2026:

- Without a Google AI plan: Flash and Pro access would be removed, leaving Flash-Lite.
- With AI Plus: Pro access would be removed.
Google’s Gemini Apps Help page, as currently opened, lists Gemini 3 Flash-Lite, Gemini 3 Flash, and Gemini 3 Pro as available to users without an AI plan as well as AI Plus, AI Pro, and AI Ultra subscribers. That conflicts with the reported upcoming restriction. Google also cautions: “Gemini Apps limits may change. Access is subject to change or may be limited based on testing, experimentation, or availability.”
To establish what applies to you, check the model picker in Gemini, look for an in-app notice, and compare it with Google’s live help page. Availability can depend on account and region, and Google says model names, versions, and access may change.

How Gemini’s usage limits work
A free account does not necessarily come with a fixed number of prompts. Google says Gemini Apps limits are compute-based and can be affected by prompt complexity, the models or features used, and the length of a conversation. Limits refresh every five hours until a weekly limit is reached. Compute-heavy features may also be unavailable to people without a plan during periods of high demand. Seven alternatives to consider—and what is verified
ChatGPT, Claude, Microsoft Copilot, and Perplexity are online assistant services. The service pages available for this comparison establish their existence, but do not verify current free-plan model access, quotas, regional availability, privacy terms, or feature access. The seven alternatives promised in the original headline cannot be responsibly listed as confirmed free options on that evidence. Treat these four as candidates to check, not guaranteed free replacements:

Before switching, check each provider’s official plan information for the model and features included without payment, usage limits and reset windows, and whether access is available in your region. Also consider the job you need done—writing, coding, source-linked research, or office integration—and review account requirements and privacy controls. A service with a free option is not automatically equivalent to Gemini’s free access.

Gemini Apps and the Gemini API are different products
The Gemini Apps model picker and subscription limits concern Google’s consumer app. The Gemini Developer API is a separate product for developers. Its pricing or free-tier status does not establish which models are available in the consumer Gemini app. Google documents the API separately at Gemini Developer API pricing.
