Its price can be volatile, it pays no interest or dividends, and the result for an investor depends on the price rising enough to cover the costs of buying, holding and selling. Treat gold as a possible source of diversification—not guaranteed protection or a substitute for cash and income-producing assets.
What does “safe haven” mean for gold?
A safe-haven investment is generally expected to preserve value, or perform comparatively well, when uncertainty or market stress rises. That expectation is not a promise that the investment will hold its price in every crisis. Gold’s record fits the more limited description: it has sometimes diversified portfolios and performed positively during systemic-risk episodes, but not in all of them.

The World Gold Council’s historical analysis says gold’s correlation with equities has tended to become more negative during extreme equity selloffs. A changing correlation can help a portfolio because assets do not always move together. But correlation describes how prices have moved in a given period; it does not guarantee that gold will rise when shares fall. Gold may decline too, or its price may be affected by other forces at the same time.

- A diversifier behaves differently from other holdings often enough to potentially change a portfolio’s overall risk. Gold’s relationship with equities and bonds can vary over time.
- A guaranteed hedge would reliably offset a particular loss. Gold is not one: neither a market fall nor a geopolitical shock ensures a gain in gold.
The Council’s 2026 edition states, “Diversification does not guarantee any investment returns and does not eliminate the risk of loss.” That qualification applies to gold as much as to any other diversifying asset.
Can gold fall during a crisis?
Yes. A crisis can create demand for gold, but it can also create an urgent need for cash. The Council’s April 2026 analysis notes that investors have sometimes sold gold during a crisis to meet other liquidity needs. If enough holders sell, gold may fall even while the event prompting the crisis remains unresolved.
Gold’s price is influenced by several forces that can point in opposing directions. A rise in perceived geopolitical or financial risk may support demand, while changing interest-rate expectations, bond yields or US-dollar strength may weigh on prices. Investor positioning can add another source of volatility: when traders unwind positions or stop-loss orders are triggered, selling can intensify a move. The presence of one supportive factor therefore does not settle what the market price will do.
The Council’s 2026 outlook describes hypothetical scenarios in which stronger growth, higher yields and a stronger dollar weigh on gold, while weaker growth and elevated risk support it. Those scenario ranges are illustrations, not price forecasts. They show why a single story—such as “uncertainty is rising, so gold must go up”—is an unreliable investment rule.

How volatile can gold be?
Gold is a diversifier because it can behave differently from equities and bonds, not because it is consistently low-volatility. The World Gold Council’s 2026 edition gives two historical examples: gold gained close to 30% in 2010 and lost close to 30% in 2013. Those figures describe past annual moves, not a forecast or a limit on future gains and losses. The Council also notes that gold has underperformed over some medium-term periods.
Volatility can be particularly pronounced when several market forces turn together. In early 2026, gold volatility reached the top fifth percentile of the data series since 1971, measured using daily LBMA Gold Price PM returns through March 31, 2026, according to the Council. It also estimated that average daily trading volumes across major venues reached US$965 billion during the last week of January 2026. These are indicators of market activity and volatility—not measures of the gain or loss any individual investor experienced.
A practical consequence is that the price at the moment you buy may not be the price at which you can later sell, particularly over a short holding period. Someone who may need to sell on a fixed date has less freedom to wait through a downturn than someone with a longer time horizon and other accessible resources. Gold’s history of sometimes performing well under stress does not remove that timing risk.
Why gold produces no income
Gold does not pay interest like a bond or dividends like a share. An owner does not receive regular cash flow simply for holding bullion or exposure to its market price. The investment return therefore depends on appreciation: the price must rise enough to cover the costs attached to the particular way the investor owns gold.

- ✔️Reverse: Portrait with an American bald eagle, a design by Jennie Norris in 2021.

The World Gold Council explains that gold has no cash flows because it is not a borrower’s promise to repay. This means a physical bar is not an issuer’s debt claim, but the absence of issuer credit risk is not the absence of investment risk. Market prices can fall, and holding, dealing or product costs can reduce the investor’s result. Gold may be unsuitable as the part of a portfolio intended to generate regular income.
This distinction matters when comparing gold with an income-producing investment. A bond or dividend-paying share may provide cash payments, although those payments and the investment’s market value carry their own risks. With gold, there is no income stream to offset a stagnant or declining price. The relevant question is not simply whether gold might appreciate, but whether its potential role in diversification is worth holding an asset that does not pay you while you wait.
Does a large gold market mean it is easy and cheap to sell?
Gold trades in a large global market, but market-wide activity does not tell you the price, spread or total cost available for a particular coin, bar or fund. The Council’s 2026 edition estimates approximately US$12.6 trillion in physical gold held by investors and central banks as of the fourth quarter of 2025, plus approximately US$1.4 trillion in open interest through exchange-traded and over-the-counter derivatives. It estimates average daily gold trading volume of approximately US$361 billion in 2025 across over-the-counter trading, futures and gold-backed exchange-traded products.

Those figures describe the scale of the overall market, not a guaranteed exit price for an individual holding. The Council’s April 2026 analysis reports that bid-ask spreads widened episodically during volatility, with some of the larger spikes occurring when liquidity was thinner. A broad market can be deep while an individual transaction still costs more to execute than expected.

For an individual investor, the specific holding and transaction terms matter more than a headline market-volume number. Physical gold and security-based exposure are different ways to access gold, and their custody, execution, counterparty or issuer arrangements may differ. Before choosing, establish how the holding is priced, what it costs to buy and sell, how it is held, and what process applies if you want to exit. The figures above do not establish a particular product’s fees, tax treatment, protections, delivery terms or resale price.

Price and timing risk
Gold can fall sharply, remain weak over a medium-term period or lose value at the same time as another asset you own. A hoped-for safe-haven role may not appear when needed. Consider whether you could tolerate a significant decline without having to sell at an unfavorable time.
No cash flow
Because gold pays no regular interest or dividends, its investment case relies on price appreciation and any portfolio-diversification benefit. If you need an investment to fund regular spending, the lack of income is a central limitation, not a minor detail.
Changing market drivers
Interest-rate expectations, bond yields, the US dollar, geopolitical risk and investor positioning may all affect prices. Some forces can support gold while others weigh on it; their influence can change. Do not treat one macroeconomic indicator or a single crisis headline as a dependable signal of what gold will do next.

Transaction, holding and exit costs
Depending on the form of exposure, an investor may face purchase and sale spreads or premiums, storage, insurance, custody or product costs. Those costs vary by transaction and holding; the market-wide liquidity estimates do not reveal them. A quoted market price alone is not enough to calculate the amount you would receive after selling.
Evidence and source perspective
The historical examples and market estimates cited here come from the World Gold Council, an industry organization focused on gold. Its analysis is useful for understanding gold-market structure and historical patterns, but it is not a personal recommendation, and its hypothetical portfolio scenarios are not guarantees. Your outcome depends on your investment, costs, circumstances and the period in which you hold it.
How to decide whether gold belongs in your portfolio
Start with the job you expect gold to do. If your priority is regular income, gold does not meet that need by itself. If you are considering it as a diversifier, ask whether the potential benefit is worth the price volatility, lack of cash flow and costs associated with your chosen form of exposure.

Decide whether you are seeking diversification, a response to a specific risk, or potential price appreciation. Do not assume gold will reliably accomplish all three.
- Set a realistic holding period. A possible long-run portfolio role does not protect someone who must sell during a short-term decline. Consider when you might need the money and what alternatives you would have if gold fell.
- Identify the exposure. Determine whether you are considering physical metal or a security linked to gold. Check the actual issuer or custody structure and the applicable dealing arrangements rather than assuming all gold exposure is equivalent.
- Calculate the full round-trip cost. Find the purchase price and likely sale terms, including any premium, spread, storage, insurance, custody or product charges that apply. These are specific to the holding and provider; broad global market statistics cannot substitute for them.
- Test the downside case. Ask whether you could keep the position if the price dropped substantially, stayed weak, or failed to rise during a period of stress. The Council’s historical examples of a near-30% gain and a near-30% loss in different years illustrate that substantial moves can go either way.
- Check local rules separately. Tax treatment and product protections depend on the jurisdiction and the specific investment. The market evidence discussed here does not establish those details.
Gold is most defensible as a considered portfolio component whose risks and costs you understand—not as an emergency guarantee. Its value as a diversifier is conditional, while its lack of income and exposure to changing market forces are inherent features of the investment.
