Not literally: current evidence does not show younger collectors abandoning fine art for fashion. It does show younger high-net-worth collectors spreading their interests across categories—and some are finding fashion through auctions, social media, and specialist archives.
What the collecting data says—and what it doesn’t
The Art Basel and UBS Survey of Global Collecting 2025 covered 3,100 high-net-worth collectors across 10 markets. Its findings describe that screened group, not all Millennials, Gen Z, or young consumers.
Within the survey, Boomers led average spending on fine art and antiques. Younger respondents showed broader cross-collecting interests across luxury, design, and lifestyle categories. Gen Z respondents had the highest average spending in several collectible sectors, including luxury handbags and collectible sneakers; their sneaker spending was almost five times the level of any other generational group. These are survey comparisons, not evidence that fashion has displaced art.
UBS reported that 56% of Gen Z respondents had the highest share of spending on collectibles in 2025. The result applies to the survey’s respondents, not to Gen Z as a whole. Art Basel CEO Noah Horowitz described the wider pattern as younger collectors “expanding beyond traditional categories into digital, design, and lifestyle collectibles, and acquiring works through an increasing number of channels.”

What fashion are younger collectors buying?
Fashion collecting spans several kinds of objects: couture and runway garments, archival accessories such as handbags, and costumes connected with films or well-known wearers. The Observer reports that younger Millennial and Gen Z buyers are entering fashion auctions for signature couture and archival pieces, but its examples illustrate activity rather than measure how common it is.
- Couture and designer archives: Mouna Ayoub’s Dior collection achieved €6.19 million at Kerry Taylor Auctions in January 2026, according to the Observer.
- Iconic handbags: The Observer reported that Jane Birkin’s original Hermès Birkin sold for $10.1 million at Sotheby’s in 2025. The feature described it as the most expensive handbag sold on the secondary market at that time.
- Screen-related fashion: Christie’s held an online sale of apparel and accessories from The Devil Wears Prada 2, an example of costume and film association bringing fashion into an auction setting.
These cases differ in object, provenance, rarity, and buyer appeal. A garment’s connection to a celebrated designer, wearer, or cultural moment can heighten interest, but the examples do not establish a standard price or appraisal method.

Why fashion can feel collectible
Fashion offers a way to collect material objects that are also wearable and tied to identity, design history, or popular culture. Former stylist Keesean Moore, owner of Moore Vintage Archive, told the Observer: “When things are so mass-produced, it’s difficult to have an individualized look.” That is one perspective on the appeal, not a universal explanation for buyers.
Discovery channels matter, too. Rachel Koffsky Parker, Christie’s international head of handbags and accessories, told the Observer that younger generations are increasingly participating as they are introduced to collecting through social media. Specialist archive showrooms such as Into Archive and Moore Vintage Archive offer another route alongside auction houses.

Are vintage designer clothes investments?
Some buyers may regard rare designer pieces as investments, but the available examples do not establish investment performance. They provide no evidence of typical returns, resale liquidity, or what an item will be worth in the future. A high-profile auction result is an exceptional sale, not a forecast for comparable pieces.
“Vintage” and “secondhand” also do not mean inexpensive. Celebrity or film provenance, rarity, designer attribution, condition, and competition among bidders can make archival fashion costly. Less-famous pieces may offer different entry points, but neither an archive showroom nor an auction guarantees affordability or future value.

How to compare a fashion collectible
There is no standardized appraisal formula established by the sources cited here. When assessing a piece, compare the factors that shape what it is and how it might reach a buyer:
- Object type: A runway garment, handbag, and screen-worn costume are distinct categories; demand for one does not establish value for another.
- Designer and provenance: Consider who designed or wore it, and whether its history can be substantiated. A notable connection may amplify interest and price.
- Rarity and condition: An archival label alone does not tell you how scarce or well-preserved a piece is.
- Route to market: Auction houses and specialist archive showrooms are different discovery and selling channels. The examples above show activity in both, not a guarantee of a sale or a particular price.
So, is fashion the new fine art?
Fashion is a growing part of a broader cross-collecting picture for some younger high-net-worth buyers, not a demonstrated replacement for fine art. The survey establishes generational differences in spending and interests; auction reporting supplies vivid fashion examples. Neither shows that younger collectors generally have left fine art behind.
