A CIE assessment of representative infrared eye trackers found that their day-long average exposure did not exceed the most limiting exposure criterion it considered. That finding is not a certification of every product or proof that every long-term question is settled. With VR and AR, it is also important to distinguish the tracker from discomfort caused by the headset or its content—and to consider the separate privacy implications of gaze data.
What eye tracking does
Eye tracking measures eye position or movement to estimate where someone is looking. In a typical system, cameras or sensors detect features such as the pupil, software estimates gaze, and an application uses that estimate. Uses can include looking-based controls, analysis of visual attention, and foveated rendering, which concentrates rendering detail around the area being viewed. These capabilities vary by device and software; they are not guaranteed features of every headset. Bozkir et al., 2023 survey

Can eye tracking damage your eyes?
The available evidence does not establish an eye-injury rate caused specifically by eye tracking. For infrared trackers, the International Commission on Illumination’s CIE 245:2021 record reports that representative systems examined did not exceed the most limiting day-long average exposure criterion considered. The report addresses extended-duration use, including a scenario of 10–12 hours per day over a lifetime. That scenario motivates the assessment; it is not an injury statistic.

The result is bounded: it concerns representative trackers examined, not every consumer device, and the publicly accessible record does not provide numerical measurements or identify all tested models. It therefore cannot be read as a blanket safety certification. For a particular device, consult its manufacturer’s safety instructions and any device-specific optical safety evidence.

IEC TR 62471-4:2022 describes methods for measuring accessible optical radiation from lamps and lamp systems under IEC 62471. It is a measurement framework, not a verdict that every eye tracker is safe.
What discomfort may come from the headset or content?
Eye tracking is only one part of an AR or VR system. The FDA identifies potential risks related to the device, content, and images, including cybersickness, dizziness, fatigue, head and neck strain, and possible effects on vision. It also notes issues such as headset weight, low-contrast images, display errors, information overload, and distraction in operating rooms. These are system- or use-related concerns; they do not show that the tracker’s optical emissions caused them. FDA: Augmented Reality and Virtual Reality in Medical Devices

The FDA says benefits, risks, and long-term effects of medical XR continue to be studied, and flags uncertainty especially for children and other vulnerable populations. People using XR for a medical purpose should weigh risks and benefits for that specific use with their clinician. If symptoms persist, stop using the device and consult a clinician rather than assuming eye tracking is the cause. FDA: Questions to Consider
Why privacy deserves attention
Gaze data can be more revealing than a simple record of where a cursor moved. Depending on the system, it may include time-stamped gaze coordinates, fixations, scanpaths, or pupil measurements. Combined with the material being viewed, these signals can indicate what attracted attention and may support inferences about personal attributes. That is a possibility described in privacy research, not proof that every headset or app collects or derives every such detail. Before enabling eye tracking, check the headset and app privacy settings and policies for the details that determine exposure:
- What is collected: raw eye images, pupil measurements, derived gaze data, or some combination?
- Is processing performed on the device, or is data sent elsewhere?
- Who can receive the data, how long is it retained, and can it be deleted?
- Can eye tracking be disabled, and which features stop working when it is off?
Policies and controls differ by product, so these questions need device- and app-specific answers.

What can eye tracking be useful for?
Depending on the implementation, gaze input can enable hands-free interaction, gaze-based interfaces, adaptive support, and foveated rendering. Researchers also use eye tracking to study visual attention and cognitive processes. These are possible functions, not guaranteed benefits or evidence that eye tracking is needed for every VR feature. Bozkir et al., 2023 survey

How to assess a specific eye-tracking device
A generic “safe” or “unsafe” label leaves out the differences that matter. Check the device and use case across these areas:
- Purpose: Is it for consumer interaction, accessibility, research, or a medical indication?
- Optical evidence: Does the manufacturer provide photobiological safety information for this exact device, and what exposure conditions does it cover?
- Data handling: What is sensed and stored, where processing occurs, who receives data, and what controls are available?
- Wear and display: Does the headset fit comfortably, and do weight, display quality, or session length contribute to symptoms?
- Feature dependence: Is eye tracking built in or an add-on, and which supported apps or features actually require it? Compatibility and calibration vary by product.
For medical XR, the FDA advises considering the benefits and risks for the intended use; its patient guidance also notes that long-term effects remain under study. FDA guidance
