Is Enshrouded Cross-Platform? Crossplay Status and Dedicated-Server Setup

Enshrouded is not cross-platform at its 1.0 launch, and Keen Games has not given an ETA for crossplay. Here is what PC and console players can do, plus a complete Windows dedicated-server setup guide.

No. Enshrouded does not support cross-platform play at its 1.0 launch. Keen Games’ October 13, 2026 launch FAQ says the studio is working on cross-platform play but has no estimate for when it will arrive. A PC player therefore cannot plan to join the same Enshrouded world as a console player at launch. You can still play cooperatively with people on the same supported platform, or run a persistent PC dedicated server for a group.

What “cross-platform” means for Enshrouded

Cross-platform play, also called crossplay, means players using different hardware platforms connect to the same multiplayer session. In practical terms, the question most groups are asking is whether a player on PC can join friends on PlayStation 5 or Xbox Series X|S.

At the 1.0 launch, the answer is no. Keen Games’ October 13, 2026 FAQ explicitly says that Enshrouded “will not be cross-platform at launch.” The same statement says the team is working on cross-platform play, but gives no delivery estimate. Treat crossplay as a future project rather than a launch feature.

Can PC and PS5 play together?

Not at launch. A Steam player and a PlayStation 5 player should not expect to share one Enshrouded world until Keen announces that cross-platform support has actually been released.

Can PC and Xbox play together?

Not at launch. The same restriction applies to Xbox Series X|S. A console release and crossplay are separate features: publishing the game on several platforms does not automatically allow those platforms to use the same servers or player sessions.

Is crossplay coming later?

Keen says it is working on cross-platform play, but has not supplied an ETA. Do not schedule a group launch around a predicted date. Check Keen Games’ current news and launch information immediately before making plans, because platform support is a live-service fact that can change.

Platform availability versus crossplay

Question Launch answer
Can two PC players play together? Yes, when they use the supported PC multiplayer tools and connect to the same session or dedicated server.
Can two players on the same console family play together? That depends on the platform’s multiplayer implementation and the game’s current console release details.
Can PC and PlayStation 5 share a world? No cross-platform play at the 1.0 launch.
Can PC and Xbox Series X|S share a world? No cross-platform play at the 1.0 launch.
Will a dedicated PC server connect console players? No. A dedicated server provides persistence, not a workaround for the platform boundary.

Keen’s older platform wording describes a game that began in Steam Early Access and would later come to PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. That establishes platform availability, not a shared multiplayer environment. Always treat those as two separate checks when planning a group.

What multiplayer modes Enshrouded supports

Keen describes Enshrouded as a cooperative online multiplayer game that can also be played solo and offline. Its cited FAQ allows groups of up to 16 players. Those options describe how many people can share a game and whether an internet connection is required; they do not indicate that cross-platform play is enabled.

Co-op groups

Players on the same supported platform can form an online group and play together. The published capacity is up to 16 players, although the practical experience depends on the host or server hardware and network conditions. A group should agree on one world and one connection method before everyone starts building, because character progression and world saves are handled separately.

Solo and offline play

You can play alone and use the game offline. Offline play is useful when you do not need friends to enter the world, but it does not create a bridge between PC and console editions. It is also a different experience from a persistent server: the world is available only through the local play arrangement rather than an always-running shared instance.

Dedicated worlds and progression

A dedicated server keeps a world available without requiring the original host to be playing. Keen’s server FAQ says character progression is stored on clients, while each game world has its own server save. That distinction matters when organizing a group: changing the server does not necessarily move every character’s progression in the same way as moving the world save, so decide where your group will play before distributing server details.

Before switching from an ordinary hosted session to a dedicated server, identify which world save your group intends to keep and make backups under your own operating procedure. Self-hosting gives the operator control of the machine, configuration and files, while a managed provider supplies its own tools and policies. Do not assume that changing the host automatically merges separate character or world data.

How to set up an Enshrouded dedicated server on PC

Keen’s documented dedicated-server installation procedure is for Windows. The server software is distributed through Steam’s Library tools rather than as a normal game launch. Use the following sequence for a self-hosted persistent world.

1. Show Steam’s Tools entries

  1. Open Steam and go to Library.
  2. Enable the Tools filter so utility software appears alongside your games.

2. Install the dedicated-server application

  1. Find Enshrouded Dedicated Server in the Tools list.
  2. Install it to the Windows machine that will remain available as the server host.

The server machine does not need to be the computer on which every group member plays, but it does need to remain powered on and connected whenever the world should be reachable. Keen’s documented executable setup is for Windows, so do not assume that the same installation steps apply to another operating system.

3. Open the installation folder

  1. In Steam, right-click the dedicated-server entry and choose Properties.
  2. Open Installed Files, then select Browse. This opens the folder containing the server executable.

4. Run the executable once

  1. Run Enshrouded Dedicated Server.exe directly from that folder. Keen’s instructions specify launching the executable rather than relying on Steam’s Launch button for this first run.
  2. Allow the process to finish its initial startup. The first run creates enshrouded_server.json.

If the JSON file is not present, check that you ran the executable from the installation directory and allowed its initial startup to complete. The file is the server’s configuration point; it is not created by merely installing the Steam tool.

5. Stop, configure and restart

  1. Stop the server process cleanly after the JSON file has been created.
  2. Open enshrouded_server.json in a text editor and adjust the settings your group needs. Keep the file valid JSON: preserve quotation marks, commas, braces and the spelling of every existing property.
  3. Save the file, then start Enshrouded Dedicated Server.exe again. The server reads the configuration during startup.

Do not edit the file while the server is running and assume those changes will take effect immediately. Stop the process first, save the configuration, and restart it so the new settings are loaded. A missing comma, an extra character or an accidentally removed brace can prevent the configuration from loading, so make a copy before making substantial changes.

6. Open the server’s network path

  1. Allow the configured query port through Windows Firewall.
  2. Create the corresponding port-forwarding rule on the router that connects the server machine to the internet.
  3. If you change the port in the JSON file later, change the firewall rule, router rule and connection details to the same value.

Port forwarding must point to the Windows computer actually running the executable, not merely to another device on the same home network. If the host machine’s local address changes, a previously correct router rule may no longer target it. Keep the port number consistent everywhere: configuration, firewall, router and the details given to players.

7. Join from the game client

  1. Launch Enshrouded and choose Join.
  2. Enable the dedicated-server filter so the browser searches for persistent servers rather than only ordinary sessions.
  3. Find the server, connect, and use the in-game favorite option if your group will return regularly.

Favoriting is useful for a regular group, but it does not keep a server online. The executable or rental instance must still be running, and the network path must remain reachable.

Ports, IPv4 and server discovery

Keen’s network troubleshooting guide lists 15637 as the default query port. Enshrouded multiplayer currently uses IPv4. The port number is not a universal constant if you change it in the server configuration; the value in the JSON file must match the value allowed in Windows Firewall, forwarded by the router and supplied to anyone connecting manually.

The query port is part of discovery and connection information, not a substitute for a running server. Opening a port on the router while the executable is stopped will not make a world appear. Conversely, a running process can remain invisible if the firewall blocks the port or the forwarding rule points at the wrong local computer.

If the server does not appear in Join

  • Confirm that the dedicated-server executable is still running. Closing the process removes the world from the browser.
  • Check that the dedicated-server filter is enabled in Join.
  • Verify that the firewall and router use the same query-port number as enshrouded_server.json.
  • Check that the router rule targets the correct Windows computer on the local network.
  • Confirm that the server is using IPv4, because Keen’s current troubleshooting guidance identifies IPv4 as the multiplayer network in use.
  • Recheck the JSON for invalid punctuation or a changed property name after your last edit.
  • Restart the server after configuration changes; a live process may still be using its earlier settings.

Use Steam’s IP fallback

Keen’s dedicated-server FAQ says you can use Steam’s View > Game Servers screen to add an IP address manually when a server is not found through the in-game browser. After adding the address there, return to Enshrouded and try joining again. This is a discovery fallback; it does not remove the need for a running server or correctly configured firewall and router rules.

How much hardware does a dedicated server need?

Keen’s dedicated-server FAQ reports approximately 4.4 GB of physical RAM for the server process while idle, plus up to 100 MB of additional RAM per player. The same FAQ recommends keeping total server RAM usage at or below 6 GB.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Published figure What it describes
Approximately 4.4 GB Physical RAM used by the server process at idle
Up to 100 MB per player Additional RAM identified for each connected player
6 GB Total server-RAM ceiling recommended in the FAQ

Using those published figures, a full 16-player group would add up to about 1.6 GB of player overhead on top of the approximately 4.4 GB idle figure, or roughly 6 GB in total. That is a simple calculation from Keen’s allowances, not a performance benchmark; leave headroom for Windows and other services instead of treating 6 GB as a target to fill.

The calculation also explains why a small group should not read the 4.4 GB idle number as the entire computer requirement. The operating system, security software, storage services and any other applications share the machine. If the server is close to the stated total, adding another service or player load can leave too little headroom for a stable host.

Other resources still matter

RAM is only one part of a reliable server. The Windows machine also needs enough CPU capacity, storage for the world save and a stable network connection. Keen’s published figures establish the memory requirement, but they do not provide a universal processor model, bandwidth target or internet-service guarantee. If the machine is also used for other applications, reserve memory and processing capacity for those applications rather than running at the stated ceiling.

Self-hosting versus renting a managed server

There are two practical ways to keep a persistent PC world online. Self-hosting gives you direct control of the Windows machine and network. Managed hosting moves most of that work to a provider. Neither option adds cross-platform play: a rented server is still subject to Enshrouded’s platform rules, so it cannot make a PC player join a console player at the 1.0 launch.

Decision area Self-hosted Windows server Managed dedicated-server rental
Control You control the executable, JSON configuration, firewall, router, backups and operating schedule. The provider operates the machine and exposes the controls it supports.
Persistence The world can stay online while your computer and internet connection remain available. The provider keeps the rented instance online without the original player hosting from home.
Operational work You install the tool, start the executable, edit enshrouded_server.json, configure networking and maintain uptime. The provider handles most machine, network and uptime maintenance.
Discovery Players use the in-game dedicated-server browser, favorites or Steam’s IP-add method. Players still use Enshrouded’s dedicated-server joining tools; the provider supplies the server details.
Documented platform Keen’s installation article documents Windows for the official executable. Platform and control-panel details depend on the provider’s current offering.
Cross-platform capability No cross-platform play at the 1.0 launch. No cross-platform play at the 1.0 launch.

When self-hosting is the better fit

  • You already have a Windows computer that can stay powered on.
  • You are comfortable editing a JSON file and changing firewall and router settings.
  • You want direct control over the save files, configuration and maintenance schedule.
  • Your group can tolerate downtime when the home connection or host computer is unavailable.

When managed hosting is simpler

  • Your group wants the world available even when the usual host is offline.
  • No one wants to manage Windows updates, port forwarding or home-network troubleshooting.
  • You prefer a provider’s control panel and support process over maintaining the executable yourself.

Keen’s official FAQ names GPORTAL as a partner offering dedicated servers that can be rented from within the game, and says servers may also be rented through other favorite providers. Current pricing, regional availability, supported platform scope and provider terms are not established by that statement, so verify those details directly before paying. Do not treat a provider’s advertised slot count or platform label as proof of crossplay; the game’s launch platform restriction still applies.

What a dedicated server does—and does not—solve

It solves host availability

A dedicated server separates the world’s availability from one player’s game session. Friends can return to the same persistent world while the original host is not actively playing, provided the server process or rental instance is online.

It does not add crossplay

Dedicated-server software does not bypass the platform boundary. At launch, a PC server remains part of the PC multiplayer environment; it is not a supported meeting point for PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S players together.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

It does not remove network configuration

Self-hosting still requires the executable to run, a valid JSON configuration, an allowed query port, router forwarding and an IPv4 connection. Managed hosting reduces those tasks but leaves players dependent on the provider’s service and the game’s own server browser.

A practical launch checklist

  • Confirm that every player is using a compatible platform; do not assume a console release means crossplay.
  • Decide whether the group needs a persistent world when the usual host is offline.
  • For self-hosting, use a Windows machine and install Enshrouded Dedicated Server from Steam’s Library > Tools.
  • Run Enshrouded Dedicated Server.exe once to create enshrouded_server.json.
  • Stop the process before editing the JSON file, then restart it after saving.
  • Use query port 15637 unless you deliberately configure another value.
  • Keep the JSON, Windows Firewall rule, router forwarding rule and shared connection details synchronized.
  • Use Join with the dedicated-server filter enabled.
  • Add the server through Steam’s View > Game Servers screen if browser discovery fails.
  • Plan memory around approximately 4.4 GB idle plus up to 100 MB per player, staying within Keen’s stated 6 GB total recommendation and leaving operating-system headroom.
  • Recheck Keen Games’ latest announcements before promising friends a cross-platform launch date; no ETA has been published.

The bottom line on Enshrouded crossplay

Enshrouded is not cross-platform at its 1.0 launch. Keen Games says cross-platform play is in development but has not estimated its arrival, so PC and console players should not plan to share a world yet. For a same-platform PC group, the official dedicated-server tool provides a persistent option: install it from Steam’s Tools section, generate and edit enshrouded_server.json, open the matching IPv4 query port (15637 by default), and join through the dedicated-server browser. Renting a managed server can remove much of the maintenance, but it cannot change the game’s launch crossplay limitation.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Enshrouded cross-platform at launch?

No. Keen Games says cross-platform play is unavailable at the 1.0 launch. The studio is working on it but has not provided an ETA.

Can PC and PS5 players play Enshrouded together?

Not at launch. PC and PlayStation 5 players should wait for an official cross-platform release announcement.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can PC and Xbox Series X|S players share an Enshrouded world?

No at launch. A console release does not automatically mean that Xbox and PC sessions use the same multiplayer environment.

How do I install the official Enshrouded dedicated server?

In Steam Library, enable the Tools filter, install Enshrouded Dedicated Server, browse its Installed Files folder, and run Enshrouded Dedicated Server.exe once. That first run creates enshrouded_server.json for configuration.

What port does an Enshrouded dedicated server use?

Keen lists query port 15637 by default. If you change it in the JSON file, use the same number in Windows Firewall, router forwarding and manual connection details. Multiplayer currently uses IPv4.

Can I rent an Enshrouded server?

Yes. Keen names GPORTAL as an in-game rental partner and says other providers may also be used. Prices, regions and supported controls vary, so confirm current terms with the provider.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How much RAM does an Enshrouded server need?

Keen reports about 4.4 GB for the server process at idle, up to 100 MB more per player, and a 6 GB total recommendation. Leave additional capacity for Windows and other services.

What should I do if my server does not appear in the browser?

Confirm the executable is running, enable the dedicated-server filter, check the JSON/firewall/router port match and verify the router targets the correct Windows machine. Steam’s View > Game Servers screen can add an IP manually as a fallback.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: Enshrouded has no cross-platform play at its 1.0 launch, and Keen Games has not given a crossplay ETA. Same-platform PC groups can run a persistent Windows server from Steam’s Tools section or rent one through a provider such as GPORTAL. The default query port is 15637 over IPv4, and the official FAQ cites approximately 4.4 GB idle RAM plus up to 100 MB per player, with 6 GB as the total recommendation.
