The cause depends on who changed the setting. It may be DuckDuckGo’s own official extension, which you installed on purpose, or a malicious third-party Chrome extension that sends searches through DuckDuckGo. Only a look at your own settings and extensions will tell you which.
Two very different reasons DuckDuckGo shows up
You (or a family member) installed the official extension
DuckDuckGo says its official Chrome extension changes the browser’s search engine to DuckDuckGo, and its Firefox add-on offers the same search-engine change. If you recently added one of these, the change is expected behavior, not an attack. Check the publisher and when it was installed before you assume anything is wrong.

A malicious extension routes searches through DuckDuckGo
DuckDuckGo’s help page says it has found malicious Chrome extensions, often with “video” in the name, that send searches to DuckDuckGo and Bing. It names “My Video Grid,” “Video Tips,” and “My Vital Video” as examples and states that “DuckDuckGo is in no way affiliated with these extensions.” It also lists “CoolSearches New Tab,” “RecipeSearch,” and “GameVille” as extensions it suspects. That suspicion comes from referrer headers on search requests that triggered its fraud detection.
These are examples from one support page, not a complete or current malware list. Not finding your extension on it proves nothing, and finding one is a lead, not a diagnosis.

So does it come from one specific source?
No. The same symptom, DuckDuckGo as your search engine, has more than one cause, and nothing on the page identifies a single installer or malware family. Mozilla defines browser hijacking as a third party changing your browser settings without permission. It says the cause can be an extension or software bundled with a download. Google Chrome Help lists a homepage or search engine that keeps changing without permission, unfamiliar redirects, and unexpected ads as signs of unwanted software.
| Question | Likely benign | Likely unwanted |
|---|---|---|
| Did you authorize it? | Yes, you installed the DuckDuckGo extension or chose it yourself | No, it changed without your action |
| Publisher | Official DuckDuckGo extension or add-on | Unfamiliar publisher, often with generic names such as “video” or “search” |
| Timing | Matches an install you remember | Started after a free download or a new extension |
| Behavior | Default search changed once; you can change it back | Setting reverts, can’t be changed, or searches redirect and show ads |
Mozilla also notes that a homepage, toolbar, or search setting you cannot change is a sign of hijacking.

How to check your browser
- Pin down what changed. Is it the default search provider, the homepage, the new-tab page, or a redirect after you search? A DuckDuckGo setting alone does not say who changed it.
- Review your extensions. In Chrome, open Settings, then Extensions, and look for anything unfamiliar or recently added. Confirm the publisher of anything that mentions DuckDuckGo. Only the official extension should be trusted.
- Check for unwanted programs. Google advises checking the computer for unwanted software before resetting Chrome settings. A reset alone may not help if the software that changed the setting is still installed.
- Remove what you did not authorize. DuckDuckGo points Chrome users to Google’s official extension-removal instructions. Firefox users can use Mozilla’s support guidance on search hijacking.
- Report suspicious extensions. DuckDuckGo’s help page gives [email protected] for reports of suspected malicious extensions.
If you simply prefer a different default, you can change the search engine back in the browser’s search settings. If it reverts on its own, treat that as a sign that something is controlling the setting.
What not to conclude
Don’t name a specific infection, installer, or malware family without inspecting the affected device. Searching through DuckDuckGo is not harmful in itself. The concern is an unauthorized change of settings or redirects you did not choose.
