Short answer: Deadlock does not have public Steam access yet. Valve currently limits entry to friend invites sent by existing playtesters. The Steam page carries a “Free to Play” tag, but also says the game is not yet available, so there is no confirmed public price or promise that the eventual release will cost nothing.
What Deadlock’s current access status means
Valve’s official Deadlock Steam listing gives the clearest answer available as of October 13, 2026. It says, “Access to Deadlock is currently limited to friend invites via our playtesters.” That wording describes a controlled playtest, not an open beta that anyone can join from the store page.

The same listing says the game is “not yet available on Steam.” In practical terms, you cannot open Steam, buy Deadlock, and start playing through a normal public purchase. A store tag reading “Free to Play” appears on the page, but the game’s unavailable status means the tag does not establish a current zero-dollar download or a confirmed future monetization policy. No public purchase price is listed.

Features, presentation, access rules and monetization can therefore change before a wider launch. Treat any claim that the final game will definitely be free as speculation unless Valve updates its official listing or makes a separate announcement.

How to get a Deadlock invite
The only official route currently described is a personal invitation from someone who is already a Deadlock playtester. That makes the first step finding a genuine friend or acquaintance with existing access, rather than searching for a hidden application form.
- Identify someone you actually know who can play Deadlock. Ask whether the person currently has access through the playtest. Possession of a Steam account alone does not establish that someone can send an invitation.
- Ask whether the invite option is available to that playtester. Valve’s wording confirms the friend-invite route, but does not promise that every tester has an unlimited number of invitations or that the control is visible at all times.
- Provide the Steam account information the tester legitimately requests. Do not send a password, authentication code or remote-control access. An invite should be associated with your own Steam account, not transferred by handing over credentials.
- Accept only an official Steam notification or in-client prompt. The official listing does not describe a paid activation code, reseller checkout or third-party verification process. A request for money in exchange for guaranteed access is not supported by Valve’s stated route.
- Install or launch Deadlock only through Steam if access is granted. If the game does not appear for your account after a purported invitation, ask the sender to verify that the invite was sent to the correct account and then rely on Steam’s own support and account notices.
These steps reflect the access model Valve has published, not a guarantee that an invitation will be available or delivered on a particular schedule. The listing supplies no public eligibility rules, processing deadline or acceptance quota.
What the invite process may look like
A September 11, 2024 post in the Steam Community discussion about getting a Deadlock invite provides an older, user-generated description: a playtester used an in-game “invite friends” option, and the invited person received a Steam notification. This is historical community context rather than current Valve documentation.

The report can help you recognize the general shape of a legitimate invitation, but it should not be treated as a current checklist. It does not prove that the same menu label, notification behavior, account conditions or timing still applies in 2026. In particular, do not rely on processing-time claims from that post; Valve has not published a current delivery estimate on the official store page.

If a friend says they sent an invitation but you see nothing, check the Steam account and notification center you normally use, confirm that the sender selected the correct account, and ask the sender to look for an in-game confirmation. Avoid repeatedly creating accounts or changing regional settings in an attempt to force access. No such workaround is documented by Valve.
Can you play without an invite?
There is no documented public method to do so while access remains restricted. The Steam listing does not show an open request-access button, public signup form, wait-list enrollment, or guaranteed eligibility test. It also does not publish a release date that would let you schedule access after the playtest.
That means the practical answer is no: without an invitation from an existing playtester, you should assume that Deadlock is unavailable to your account. This is a statement about the current access arrangement, not a prediction about the eventual launch. Valve could change the process, open the test or release the game later.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsWhy third-party offers are risky
Because the official route is friend-to-friend, offers from strangers deserve particular caution. A seller cannot point to an official paid-access program in the Steam listing. Paying for an account, buying a supposed invite code, sharing your login or installing an unofficial launcher can expose you to account theft, malware or a revoked entitlement. The safest response to a paid “guaranteed invite” is not to proceed and not to provide credentials.
A legitimate friend should be able to use Steam’s own account and notification systems. You should never need to disable security protections, send a one-time authentication code or let another person operate your account in order to receive a normal invitation.
What “Free to Play” does—and does not—tell you
On Steam, “Free to Play” is a store classification. In Deadlock’s case it appears alongside a notice that the product is not yet available. Those two pieces of information must be read together: there is no public download-and-play transaction to complete today, and no listed price that can be used to budget for access.
The tag also does not disclose how a final release might be funded. It does not answer whether optional purchases, cosmetic items, season-based content, account restrictions or other commercial features could exist. Valve has not provided those details in the listing cited here. Avoid treating screenshots, videos or community assumptions about monetization as confirmed policy.
If you are deciding whether to wait, the useful distinction is between current access and future pricing. Current access is controlled by playtester invitations. Future pricing remains unconfirmed despite the tag, so make no purchase decision based on an assumption that launch access will be permanently free.

Hardware and software requirements
Do not buy or upgrade a computer solely on the basis of a detailed Deadlock specification: the official page does not provide one. It identifies a 64-bit processor and operating system requirement, while other system-requirement fields are not yet specified. That is insufficient to establish a minimum CPU model, graphics card, memory amount, storage size or supported Windows version.
A generic gaming PC, mouse, headset, printed guide or physical copy is not identified as necessary to obtain an invite. Deadlock is a digital Steam playtest, and the listing does not name special hardware beyond the broad 64-bit requirement. Wait for Valve to publish complete specifications before treating a component purchase as necessary for this game.
How to check for changes
- Open the official Deadlock Steam page while signed in to the account you would use for play.
- Read the availability notice, access instructions and system-requirements section rather than relying on the “Free to Play” tag alone.
- Look for a newly enabled request button, an updated launch status or specific hardware requirements. None of those items is currently established by the cited listing.
- Use Steam’s own notifications and library status after a friend says an invite was sent.
Common situations and what to do
A friend says they have access but cannot find an invite control
Valve’s public wording confirms the friend-invite model but does not promise a particular menu name or guarantee that every playtester can invite someone at any moment. Ask the friend to check the current in-game and Steam interface, then consult official updates. Do not install modified files or use an unofficial tool that claims to expose a hidden invitation function.

Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →An invitation was supposedly sent, but your account has no access
First verify that the sender used the Steam account you intend to play on. Check Steam notifications and the game library, then ask the sender whether the game showed a confirmation. Because Valve publishes no delivery-time commitment, an immediate result cannot be assumed. If the account still shows no entitlement, use Steam’s official support channels rather than paying another person to “refresh” the invite.

You see a download link outside Steam
Stop and verify the source. The official access description points to Steam and playtester invitations; it does not authorize a separate installer. Do not run an executable supplied by a stranger, enter your Steam password into a look-alike site or disable antivirus protections for an alleged invite.
You are asked to pay for access
The official listing does not identify a paid invite route or a resale program. Payment therefore does not provide a documented guarantee. Keep your money and account credentials out of the transaction, and wait for an official change to the access model.
What to expect from an early-development playtest
Valve warns that Deadlock remains in early development with temporary art and experimental gameplay. If you receive access, the build should be understood as work in progress rather than a finished product. Visual assets, interface text, balance, maps, modes and technical performance may change as development continues.
This status also explains why a friend’s experience may not match a later account’s experience. Access waves, invite controls and content can be adjusted without creating a public retail launch. Save important feedback through whatever in-game or Steam channel Valve provides at the time, and avoid presenting temporary behavior as a final feature.
The early-development notice is not a promise of a particular release window. Valve’s listing does not provide a public launch date, so articles, videos or social posts that assign a firm date should be treated as unverified unless they link to a new official announcement.
Bottom line for prospective players
As of October 13, 2026, Deadlock access is a limited playtest shared through existing playtesters’ friend invitations. The game is not publicly available on Steam, and the “Free to Play” label is not a confirmed current price or final monetization promise. There is no official public signup, guaranteed invite schedule or published full PC specification. Your safest plan is to ask a real friend with access, accept any invitation through Steam’s normal systems, avoid paid or credential-based offers, and check Valve’s listing for changes before spending money or upgrading hardware.
