No. CMOS is not a type of silicon: it is a technology for building circuits with complementary p-type and n-type MOS transistors. Silicon is commonly the semiconductor material and wafer substrate used to make those circuits, but a CMOS chip also contains other materials.
What does CMOS mean?
CMOS stands for complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor. It describes an integrated-circuit technology built around complementary PMOS and NMOS transistors—not a chemical element or a single material. In a complementary circuit, the two transistor types work together to implement logic.

Samsung’s CMOS glossary defines CMOS as an integrated-circuit type combining PMOS and NMOS transistors. Intel’s transistor explainer also describes complementary nMOS and pMOS devices and explains that MOSFET structures are built into silicon.
What materials are in a CMOS chip?
Silicon is a common foundation, but a fabricated CMOS device is a stack of materials and regions with different electrical roles. The precise recipe depends on the manufacturer and process.
#1 Best Overall
- 640x480 VGA Resolution – 1/6" CMOS sensor with 300k-pixel array for real-time imaging and embedded vision applications.
- Low-Power Operation – 60mW at 15fps (VGA/YUV) with 2.5-3.0V I/O voltage and integrated 1.8V LDO core regulation.
- Auto-Image Optimization – AE (exposure), AGC (gain), AWB (balance), anti-bloom, and black-level calibration for adaptive lighting conditions.
- Programmable Image Parameters – Adjustable color saturation, hue, gamma correction, and edge sharpness via SCCB/I²C interface.
- Multi-Format Output – Raw RGB, RGB565/555/444, YUV 4:2:2, and YCbCr 4:2:2 via 8-bit parallel data port (D0-D7).
- Substrate and transistor regions: Silicon provides the semiconductor body. Selected regions are doped to alter their electrical properties; dopants are atoms introduced into the silicon, not a separate bulk layer. NIST explains that dopant placement can affect electronic properties and contribute to device variability (NIST, “Atomically precise device fabrication,” 2016).
- Gate dielectric and gate electrode: These materials help control the transistor channel. The technology name includes “oxide” and “metal,” but those words do not guarantee a single, fixed gate-material recipe in every process.
- Contacts and interconnects: Conductive materials connect transistors to one another and to the rest of the circuit. They are part of the chip even though they are not silicon.
Examples show why there is no one CMOS recipe
The Semi-Conductor Laboratory of India describes a specific 180 nm CMOS process using an 8-inch p-type silicon wafer. Its listed materials include nitrided gate oxide, doped polysilicon gates, cobalt silicide, tungsten contact and via fill, and Ti/TiN/AlCu interconnect layers. These are details of that facility’s process, not a universal bill of materials for CMOS (SCL CMOS Fabrication Facility).
Material choices can differ even at the transistor gate. Intel’s account of its 45 nm process describes hafnium-based high-k material replacing silicon dioxide as the gate dielectric, and metal replacing polysilicon as the gate electrode (Intel, “High-k and Metal Gate Transistor Research”). The 180 nm and 45 nm examples illustrate different process choices; they are not a controlled performance comparison.

Does every CMOS device have to use silicon?
The examples here establish that silicon is widely used in CMOS fabrication, not that the term CMOS requires a silicon substrate in every possible implementation. CMOS refers to the complementary circuit technology. The substrate and material stack are implementation choices, so it is more accurate to say that CMOS chips are commonly silicon-based than to define CMOS as silicon.
