Attention is essential to many intelligent acts: it helps select relevant information and keep goals in play. But the evidence does not establish attention as intelligence’s sole essence. Intelligence is better understood as a broader capacity involving several interacting cognitive processes, and attention itself is not a single, uniform ability.
What is attention?
Attention is often treated as if it were one mental spotlight, but that image can hide important differences. In a 2021 review in WIREs Cognitive Science, Richard J. Krauzlis and colleagues define attention as “the set of evolved brain processes that leads to adaptive and effective behavioral selection.” That is the authors’ working definition, not a universally settled scientific formula. They also describe their evolutionary perspective as speculative and question whether familiar distinctions between types of attention map neatly onto detailed biological mechanisms.

A useful way to make the idea concrete is to think about competing demands. A person trying to follow a conversation in a noisy room has to prioritize some information over other information; someone working toward a goal has to keep relevant information available while distractions compete for notice. These examples illustrate why selection matters for intelligent behavior, but they do not show that attention alone produces intelligence.

Are all forms of attention the same?
No. Reviews of the human attention system distinguish functions commonly described as alerting, orienting, and executive control. These labels refer to different ways attention can support behavior, rather than three names for an identical mental power. They are useful functional distinctions, but they should not be mistaken for a complete map of the underlying biology.

- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Petersen and Posner’s 2012 review of the attention system also discusses how attentional control changes across development. That matters because “attention” can refer to abilities that do not develop or operate in exactly the same way. A broad claim about attention should therefore specify which function or aspect of control it means.
How does attention relate to executive function and intelligence?
Attention overlaps with executive function, but executive function is broader. In her 2013 review, Adele Diamond identifies inhibition, working memory, and cognitive flexibility as core executive functions. Inhibition can help a person resist an irrelevant response; working memory supports holding information in mind; and cognitive flexibility supports shifting between rules, perspectives, or demands. These abilities can work together with attentional control, but the terms are not interchangeable.

Diamond discusses the relationships among executive functions, fluid intelligence, and executive attention. Those connections make attention relevant to intelligence, but a relationship among concepts or abilities does not establish that one is the sole cause or definition of another. The boundaries between attention, working memory, and control remain a conceptual and measurement challenge.
Is attention the same as consciousness?
No. Attention concerns selection or prioritization; consciousness concerns conscious experience. They are related, but they can come apart. In their 2007 review, Christof Koch and Naotsugu Tsuchiya summarize evidence that people can attend to perceptually invisible objects, and that a person may consciously perceive an isolated object or the gist of a scene with little top-down attention.

- Sleek 7-in-1 USB-C Hub: Features an HDMI port, two USB-A 3.0 ports, and a USB-C data port, each providing 5Gbps transfer speeds. It also includes a USB-C PD input port for charging up to 100W and dual SD and TF card slots, all in a compact design.
- Flawless 4K@60Hz Video with HDMI: Delivers exceptional clarity and smoothness with its 4K@60Hz HDMI port, making it ideal for high-definition presentations and entertainment. (Note: Only the HDMI port supports video projection; the USB-C port is for data transfer only.)
- Double Up on Efficiency: The two USB-A 3.0 ports and a USB-C port support a fast 5Gbps data rate, significantly boosting your transfer speeds and improving productivity.
- Fast and Reliable 85W Charging: Offers high-capacity, speedy charging for laptops up to 85W, so you spend less time tethered to an outlet and more time being productive.
- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
The point is not that attention and consciousness never interact. Rather, Koch and Tsuchiya argue that top-down attention and consciousness are distinct phenomena that can be studied with different experimental paradigms. Treating them as synonyms would blur an important distinction when asking what makes thought intelligent.
Does intelligence have a single “center” in the brain?
The reviewed account does not locate intelligence in one brain area. In their 2010 review of human intelligence differences, Ian J. Deary, Lars Penke, and Wendy Johnson describe evidence implicating a distributed parieto-frontal network and the importance of network integrity. This supports a system-level view: intelligent performance depends on coordinated processes, not a lone “intelligence center.”

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
Attention can be one part of that coordination, helping behavior prioritize what matters. But a distributed account of intelligence also leaves room for other processes, including executive functions. A 2020 review by Gavin W. Lindsay, Attention in Psychology, Neuroscience, and Machine Learning, reflects how attention is examined across several fields; the shared label does not by itself mean that every field is studying precisely the same mechanism.
So, is attention the essence of intelligence?
It depends on what “essence” means. If it means a necessary ingredient in many intelligent actions, attention is a strong candidate: without selecting relevant information and sustaining goal-directed control, many tasks would be difficult or impossible. If it means the single process that defines, explains, or causes intelligence, the reviewed evidence does not support that reduction.

- 5-in-1 Connectivity: Equipped with a 4K HDMI port, a 5 Gbps USB-C data port, two 5 Gbps USB-A ports, and a USB C 100W PD-IN port. Note: The USB C 100W PD-IN port supports only charging and does not support data transfer devices such as headphones or speakers.
- Powerful Pass-Through Charging: Supports up to 85W pass-through charging so you can power up your laptop while you use the hub. Note: Pass-through charging requires a charger (not included). Note: To achieve full power for iPad, we recommend using a 45W wall charger.
- Transfer Files in Seconds: Move files to and from your laptop at speeds of up to 5 Gbps via the USB-C and USB-A data ports. Note: The USB C 5Gbps Data port does not support video output.
- HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.
- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
The more defensible answer is that attention is a central enabling set of processes within a wider, distributed system. Intelligence also involves functions such as working memory and cognitive flexibility, and the relationships among these capacities are not reducible to a single simple formula.
