Usually, no. ASUS GPU Tweak III does not automatically deliver higher FPS or a higher overclock simply because the graphics card carries an ASUS logo. For ordinary clock tuning, undervolting, fan curves and monitoring, MSI Afterburner works with ASUS cards and is often the more flexible general-purpose choice. GPU Tweak III becomes the better fit when you need ASUS-specific modes, telemetry, FanConnect control or application-linked profiles.
Your GPU’s silicon, VBIOS, cooler, power delivery, drivers and tuning settings determine achievable performance—not the brand name on the utility.

ASUS’s current global page lists GPU Tweak III stable version v2.1.8.0, released August 17, 2026. ASUS documents support for Windows 10 and Windows 11 and for NVIDIA and AMD desktop graphics cards. Features vary by exact board, firmware and software version: ASUS GPU Tweak III overview and ASUS support documentation.
#1 Best Overall
- Axial-tech fans now feature a smaller fan hub that facilitates longer blades and a barrier ring that increases downward air pressure
- Phase-change GPU thermal pad helps ensure optimal heat transfer, lowering GPU temperatures for enhanced performance and reliability
- 2.5-slot design allows for greater build compatibility while maintaining cooling performance
- Dual-ball fan bearings last up to twice as long as standard conventional sleeve bearings designs
- 0dB technology lets you enjoy light gaming in relative silence
Preset operating modes
Default, Overclocking, Quiet and Custom modes let a less experienced user select an ASUS-defined behavior instead of building every setting manually. ASUS describes Overclocking mode as trading higher temperatures and fan noise for performance, while Quiet mode reduces noise with a corresponding performance or thermal trade-off. The campaign page also describes OC and Silent presets that adjust power targets and boost offsets. The result depends on the card model, firmware, driver and room temperature.
Profile Connect
Profile Connect links a tuning profile or mode—and an associated OSD profile—to a particular game or application. That can automate switching between a quiet desktop profile, an undervolt for one title and a higher-power profile for another.
ASUS fan and quiet-operation controls
GPU Tweak III exposes custom curves, fixed RPM settings, hysteresis and update periods. On compatible boards it can also control system fans connected to ASUS FanConnect headers. ASUS advertises enhanced 0dB behavior, but the card’s firmware can manage factory fan-stop behavior independently; GPU Tweak III is not universally required to retain it.
VF Tuner and model-specific telemetry
GPU Tweak III includes a Voltage-Frequency Tuner for curve adjustments. Selected ROG and ASUS cards may expose Power Detector+, Level Sense, ROG Equalizer and other sensors or controls. These are not benefits every ASUS card receives. ASUS’s support page notes, for example, that the ROG Equalizer setting in version 2.1.1.7 and later should only be enabled when the corresponding ROG Equalizer cable is connected: ASUS’s model restrictions.
What MSI Afterburner does as well or better
Broad compatibility
Afterburner is designed as a general-purpose utility rather than an MSI-only tool. It remains useful if you later move from ASUS to another board brand or operate a system with mixed-brand GPUs.

Manual tuning controls
MSI documents core and memory frequency, voltage, power and temperature limits, fan curves, saved profiles, startup application, hardware monitoring and OC Scanner support: Afterburner technical details.
A wider slider range in one application does not prove a higher safe overclock. If the VBIOS disables voltage adjustment, caps the power limit or omits a sensor, changing utilities generally will not remove that restriction.

Afterburner’s hardware-monitoring overlay depends on RivaTuner Statistics Server. MSI says RTSS supplies the in-game display and controls its font, position, size and related presentation. This combination is usually the stronger choice for users who want a highly configurable overlay, but it adds another installed component: MSI’s RTSS guidance.
Automated overclocking
Both utilities offer an OC Scanner for supported NVIDIA cards. ASUS says its scan can take up to 30 minutes; MSI describes a scan of approximately 30 minutes or less. Neither vendor presents the result as a guarantee of stability in every game or workload.

Undervolting
Both are capable. GPU Tweak III’s VF Tuner and Afterburner’s voltage-frequency curve editor can target a voltage, set its corresponding frequency, save a profile and test it. Choose the interface that makes your preferred curve easiest to edit and restore; no universal efficiency advantage is established for either program.
Manual overclocking
Afterburner is often the simpler general-purpose workflow for adjusting core, memory, voltage, power and temperature limits. GPU Tweak III is just as appropriate when its ASUS modes or model-specific controls are useful.
Automated overclocking
Either scanner can provide a starting profile on a supported NVIDIA card. Test the result in your own games; a scan does not guarantee complete stability.
Streaming and in-game monitoring
Choose Afterburner plus RTSS if overlay layout and sensor customization are priorities. Choose GPU Tweak III if you prefer ASUS’s integrated OSD and logging.

ROG enthusiast cards
GPU Tweak III is the logical first choice when your exact card exposes Power Detector+, Level Sense, FanConnect or cable-dependent controls. Confirm support for the full model rather than assuming the feature is present because the card is branded ROG.
Multiple-brand or upgrade-prone systems
Afterburner avoids tying your workflow to ASUS hardware and is the more portable choice.

- Record your current clocks, voltage, fan curve and profile assignments.
- In the current utility, restore GPU defaults and disable “Start with Windows” or automatic profile loading.
- Restart the computer so the old settings are cleared.
- Install the replacement from the official ASUS or MSI download page.
- Apply one change at a time and test before enabling startup loading.
- Use only one active fan controller and one active OSD. Running both overlays can duplicate readings, and having both utilities apply startup settings can produce unexpected clocks, voltage, fan behavior or profiles.
Installing both programs while only one applies settings is usually unnecessary but can be workable. During troubleshooting, designate one controller and disable automatic behavior in the other.
Stability, recovery and warranty considerations
Validate every automated or manual profile
- Save a default profile.
- Apply the new setting.
- Run a repeatable benchmark.
- Test several games, including a demanding title.
- Watch for artifacts, driver resets, crashes, abnormal temperatures and unexpected fan changes.
- Reduce the clock or return to default if instability appears.
ASUS documents that completely powering off and restarting after an overclocking-related black screen can restore the normal startup value: ASUS recovery guidance. Avoid aggressive startup profiles until they have passed real-world testing, and know how to boot Windows without the tuning utility if crashes repeat.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Neither ASUS branding nor MSI software guarantees warranty coverage. Coverage depends on the product terms, region and cause of any damage. MSI specifically warns that damage caused during overclocking is not covered by its warranty guidance: MSI’s documentation. Check the exact warranty policy for your country and card.
Laptop owners should be especially cautious: cooling and power limits differ from desktop cards, and MSI advises only minor boosts with close temperature monitoring. Do not enable cable- or current-threshold features unless your hardware meets the stated requirement.
Verdict
For an ordinary ASUS desktop GPU, MSI Afterburner does not sacrifice meaningful performance merely because it is not ASUS software. Choose GPU Tweak III when ASUS-specific presets, Profile Connect, FanConnect or model-dependent telemetry matter. Choose Afterburner when you want broad compatibility, detailed manual tuning, undervolting flexibility or an RTSS-based overlay. If neither utility solves a real problem for you, leaving the card at its stable factory configuration is the simplest option.
