Is an AI English Speaking Partner Enough to Improve Fluency?

AI English-speaking partners can make rehearsal easier, but evidence supports using them alongside varied human conversation—not as a complete substitute.

An AI English-speaking partner can help you practise, but current evidence does not show that AI alone is enough to build durable, broad speaking fluency. It offers a low-pressure way to rehearse and get feedback; human conversation adds unpredictable turns, clarification and natural negotiation of meaning. Use AI as one part of a routine, then check whether your practice transfers to conversations with people.

What the evidence says about AI speaking practice

Research points to potential benefits, not a guarantee. A 2024 systematic review by Du and Daniel examined 24 empirical studies published from 2017 through 2023. It found reported benefits across speaking outcomes, including fluency, confidence, pronunciation and anxiety, while describing the field as still early-stage. The review covers those 24 studies, not every study ever conducted, and does not establish that AI practice by itself produces lasting fluency. Read the systematic review.

A 2026 classroom study by Lin and Lin offers a more recent comparison. It involved 83 Chinese university sophomores in two intact classes at one university: 41 students in the AI group and 42 in the comparison group. Over 16 weeks, the AI group practised with a conversational agent for approximately 120 minutes per week. That was the study protocol, not a universal recommended amount.

On the post-test, the AI group’s overall oral-proficiency score was 10.27, compared with 9.37 for the comparison group (p = 0.006). The between-group difference was significant for adaptability, but not for the individual accuracy/range or coherence/fluency subscores. The overall score therefore should not be presented as proof that AI produced a greater fluency improvement than the alternative. Read the Lin and Lin study.

Fluency means more than talking at length or receiving positive feedback. In a speaking task, it includes expressing ideas with manageable hesitation and maintaining a coherent, relevant exchange. Lin and Lin reported within-group gains in coherence and fluency for students using AI, but their post-test coherence/fluency score was not significantly different from the comparison group’s. Improvement within one group is not the same as evidence that the AI caused more improvement than another approach.

What AI is useful for—and what it cannot replace

Use it for repeatable rehearsal

An AI partner can give you a patient place to practise aloud, try vocabulary in context, rehearse an answer, or role-play a familiar situation. You can repeat a task, ask for a concise correction, and then try again without the social pressure of a live conversation. These are useful ways to increase speaking practice, provided the tool actually understands what you said.

Use people for unpredictable interaction

Conversation with a person requires you to handle unexpected replies, ask for clarification, adjust your pace and negotiate meaning in real time. AI may simulate some of this, but the reviewed evidence does not establish that chatbots are equivalent to human conversation partners or that practice reliably transfers to unfamiliar real-world situations. Treat transfer as something to observe in your own conversations, not a proven outcome.

Watch for recognition and interaction problems

The 2024 review identifies speech-recognition errors, difficulty serving learners at different proficiency levels, disengaging or monotonous formats, and constrained interaction as practical limits. Learners in Lin and Lin’s study also described recognition errors, repetitive or constrained topics, long feedback and exchanges that did not always feel authentic. A fluent-sounding correction is not necessarily useful if the tool misheard the original sentence.

How to make practice more useful

  1. Choose a speaking task. Decide whether you are rehearsing a short presentation, paired conversation, open-ended story or debate. Different tasks call for different kinds of speaking, and a narrow scripted dialogue will not test them all.
  2. Speak aloud rather than type. If your aim is spoken fluency, use voice interaction where available. Typing can support vocabulary work, but it does not give you the same spoken practice.
  3. Check what the tool heard. Before accepting a correction, confirm that the speech recognition captured your words accurately. If it did not, repeat or rephrase the sentence instead of learning from a misheard version.
  4. Ask for brief, specific feedback. Request one or two actionable corrections at a time—for example, a word choice or a sentence that was hard to follow—so you can apply the feedback in another spoken attempt.
  5. Change the format and partner. Practise multiple task types with AI, then use human conversation to test how you respond to unfamiliar turns, clarification requests and natural pacing.
  6. Notice what transfers. Pay attention to whether you can use a phrase or respond more smoothly with a person in a situation you did not rehearse. If a skill only appears in the same AI script, broaden the task rather than assuming it has become general fluency.

How to judge an AI speaking tool

Features alone do not tell you whether a tool will help your speaking. Try it with your own voice and tasks, and assess the interaction itself:

  • Interaction quality: Does it follow your meaning, cope with topic changes and invite clarification, or steer you back to a fixed script?
  • Feedback quality: Are corrections accurate, concise, understandable at your level and practical to use while speaking?
  • Practice breadth: Can you practise several kinds of speaking and spontaneous turns, or only narrow dialogues?
  • Fit and access: Does speech recognition work reliably with your accent, device and proficiency level, and can you use it consistently?
  • Transfer: Does practice help you handle conversations with people beyond the rehearsed prompt? The available studies do not provide a definitive general answer, so evaluate this through your own varied conversations.

How far to generalize the findings

The 2024 review covers literature published through 2023 and only 24 qualifying empirical studies, so it cannot settle long-term effects or represent every later-generation voice tool. The 2026 comparison adds evidence from one customized agent at one university, with two intact classes rather than a large, multi-site randomized trial. Its authors caution that causal inference and generalization are limited. Results from those settings should not be treated as predictions for every learner, accent, AI system or learning goal.

Lin and Lin also found that anxiety results depended on the speaking task. Situational anxiety was lower for pair work and presentations, but not for debate or storytelling; there was no statistically significant overall between-group anxiety difference. Their conclusion describes possible gains in oral performance from scaffolded AI interaction, while the measured outcomes varied by task and overall anxiety did not significantly decline.
