Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →An AI assistant can be used in FPGA design only as part of an approved, bounded workflow: control what design information it can access, review every change, and keep the project’s normal verification and release gates in place. It is not automatically safe, and available guidance does not certify any assistant or generated HDL for every FPGA design or toolchain.
What “safe” means for an FPGA workflow
Safety depends on the assistant’s configuration, the information it can see, the actions it can take, and the controls around changes it produces. Before adoption, document which tools and use cases are approved, what data classifications may be entered, and which security gates remain mandatory through development. OWASP’s AI Security Verification Standard (AISVS) also recommends evaluating the tool and modeling threats such as prompt injection, information leakage, insecure outputs, excessive agency, and dependency-chain risk.

Use organizationally approved tools, not an unreviewed personal account or extension. The UK Home Office’s secure AI system development guidance says teams remain accountable for AI-assisted outputs and requires the same security standards, reviews, and controls as for code written without AI assistance.

Checklist: control data and assistant access before use
Approve the exact tool and use case
- Record the assistant’s name, version, account tier, extensions, and integrations, then confirm that this precise setup is approved for the project’s data classification.
- Define permitted and prohibited inputs and actions in writing. Include rules for untrusted repository text, such as issues, pull requests, documentation, or external content that could contain prompt-injection attempts.
- Threat-model the assistant’s access and capabilities. A tool that can only answer questions has a different risk profile from one that can inspect a repository, run commands, or edit trusted build files.
Find out what information leaves the workstation
Do not assume the assistant receives only the text in the prompt or the file currently on screen. Coding assistants may transmit open-file content, project structure, or terminal output to their provider. Inspect what the selected tool sends and check its current documentation and applicable contract for retention, training use, access, and data residency. General guidance does not establish the practices of any particular vendor or plan.

- Review tool-specific exclusions and permissions. Keep credentials, keys, restricted design files, and proprietary material out of assistant context unless that exact use has been approved.
- Verify exclusions rather than assuming they work. OWASP cautions that ordinary
.gitignorerules do not necessarily prevent an assistant from accessing files. - Before sending RTL, constraints, testbenches, logs, or design documents, confirm how prompts and outputs are treated under the tool’s confidentiality, ownership, retention, and training terms.
- Route restricted, export-controlled, contractually protected, or otherwise sensitive material through approved security and legal processes. The cited general guidance does not determine FPGA-specific export-control obligations.
Checklist: review generated HDL and project changes
Understand the complete change
- Inspect the complete diff, including files beyond the HDL: scripts, dependencies, CI/CD configuration, constraints, and documentation.
- Understand each change and compare its behavior with the design specification. A plausible explanation or syntactically valid HDL is not evidence that the design is correct or secure.
- Give extra scrutiny to build scripts, dependencies, and deployment flows. Changes there can run in privileged or otherwise trusted contexts.
- Record the AI-assisted change, reviewer, verification evidence, and approval in the project’s usual engineering process.
Keep independent verification and release gates
Run the project’s normal independent verification and analysis, selected for the design and organizational requirements. Depending on the project, that may include simulation, code analysis, formal checks, synthesis and build review, and hardware validation. These are practical applications of the requirement to preserve existing security gates; the cited guidance does not prescribe a universal FPGA test suite.
Assistant-written tests can help, but they do not establish security by themselves. Review test assumptions and coverage, and do not let generated tests replace independent checks or required human approval before production.

Checklist: protect IP and assess licensing
- Check the terms that apply to the selected product and plan for prompts, uploaded design material, generated output, confidentiality, ownership, training, and retention.
- Review the provenance and licenses of suggested code and dependencies before incorporating them. Do not assume generated output is free of third-party material or that an assistant’s explanation establishes its origin.
- Verify any claimed IP protection against the actual terms, including plan eligibility, scope, and exclusions. UK Government guidance notes that enterprise or professional offerings may provide indemnity or controls against proprietary suggestions; this does not mean every offering provides them or that every use is covered.
For external guidance on AI-assisted code security, see the UK Home Office’s secure AI system development guidance and the OWASP AISVS. Neither replaces review of the specific vendor contract, organizational policy, and jurisdiction that apply to a project.
What FPGA-specific evidence does—and does not—show
The 2023 paper Fixing Hardware Security Bugs with Large Language Models studied repair of security-relevant Verilog bugs. Its authors reported that an ensemble repaired all ten benchmarks in their evaluation. That result applies to the paper’s benchmark and method; it is not a general success rate, proof of design correctness, or certification of a commercial assistant or FPGA toolchain.

The available general guidance and this bounded study do not establish a universally safe assistant, confirm the data practices of a current vendor plan, or certify generated HDL. Treat this checklist as an organizational decision aid, not a certification or legal opinion.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.A practical approval decision
Approve an assistant for a project only when the team can identify the exact tool configuration, allowed data and actions, applicable data terms, human review responsibility, and verification gates. If any of those are unknown—especially what repository context is sent or whether sensitive files are excluded—do not expose protected design material until the organization resolves the gap.
