A July 2026 Morningstar estimate viewed the shares as moderately undervalued, but that was one dated, model-dependent opinion—not a guarantee or a current verdict. Amazon’s growth is strong, while its recent capital spending has weighed heavily on reported free cash flow.
What does “bargain” mean for Amazon stock?
A bargain is not simply a share with a low nominal price. It means the market price is below a reasonable estimate of the company’s future value. That estimate depends on assumptions about growth, profitability, investment needs, and risk; different analysts can reach different conclusions, and estimates change as results and share prices move.

Morningstar’s July 23, 2026, pre-earnings article said it considered Amazon moderately undervalued relative to its $280-per-share long-term fair-value estimate. That was Morningstar’s model-specific view at that time, not a consensus target or a promise that the shares would reach that price. The same article cited a negative 1% free-cash-flow yield and said AWS capacity expansion constrained cash flow. How strong is Amazon’s business growth?
Annual results show broad expansion
Amazon reported $716.9 billion in consolidated net sales for fiscal 2025, up 12% from 2024. It reported $80.0 billion in operating income and $77.7 billion in net income for the year. Amazon’s 2025 Form 10-K

AWS contributes a large share of operating income
AWS generated $128.7 billion in fiscal 2025 sales, up 20% year over year, and $45.6 billion in operating income. North America, by comparison, produced $426.3 billion in sales and $29.6 billion in operating income. Quarterly growth accelerated, but one quarter is not a forecast
In Q2 2026, Amazon reported year-over-year consolidated net sales growth of 20% and AWS sales growth of 37%. These results provide a more recent snapshot of momentum, but they do not establish that those growth rates will continue or prove that the stock is undervalued. Amazon’s Q2 2026 Form 10-Q

Why capital spending complicates the valuation
Amazon reported free cash flow of $11.2 billion in fiscal 2025, down from $38.2 billion in fiscal 2024. Net purchases of property and equipment rose to $128.3 billion from $77.7 billion over the same period. The combination matters: a company can grow sales and operating income while directing substantially more cash toward infrastructure and other assets, leaving less reported free cash flow in the near term.

What could make the shares look cheap—or expensive?
- Price versus value estimate: Morningstar’s $280 estimate was dated July 23, 2026, and depends on its assumptions. Compare any valuation estimate with the share price and assumptions current when making a decision.
- Segment economics: Evaluate AWS and North America by operating income as well as sales growth; the segments have different contributions to profit.
- Cash generation and investment: Consider whether higher infrastructure spending can support future growth and whether cash generation improves enough to justify that spending.

A practical checklist before reaching a conclusion
- Check Amazon’s latest share price and current analyst or valuation assumptions; do not carry forward a July 2026 estimate as if it were current.
- Review sales growth and operating income by segment, not just consolidated revenue.
- Track operating cash flow, property and equipment purchases, and Amazon’s reported free cash flow together.
- Assess whether spending on capacity is producing durable returns, rather than assuming that growth alone makes the stock inexpensive.
- Read the company’s latest risk disclosures and consider how changes in growth, margins, or investment needs could alter an estimate of value.
