Neither metal is better for every phone. Aluminum and titanium each bring different engineering strengths, and the Apple models examined here combine them rather than choosing one. A frame’s material matters less than the complete phone: its geometry, internal supports, cooling layout, and repair design. The most reliable way to judge a frame is to compare whole models and their published characteristics, not the metal named in the marketing.
What the frame material does and does not decide
A phone frame does more than hold the glass and the back panel together. It carries the internal structure, shapes the edges you hold, and provides a path for heat to move through the chassis. Its material influences strength, mass, and heat spreading, but each of those outcomes also depends on the parts around it: the battery, the logic board, the cameras, the internal supports, and the glass bonding. Two phones with the same metal can behave very differently, and two phones with different metals can end up close in weight or thermal behavior.

Mixed construction: a metal label can hide a second metal
Many premium phones are not built from a single metal. Apple’s description of the iPhone 15 Pro is the clearest example in its own lineup, and it shows why the question “aluminum or titanium?” can have a misleading premise.

In its September 2023 announcement, Apple described titanium bands that encase a substructure made from 100 percent recycled aluminum. Apple said the aluminum frame helps with thermal dissipation. The design therefore uses both metals in different roles, and calling the phone a “titanium phone” describes only the outer band. Apple’s iPhone 15 Pro announcement is the primary source for these construction details.

Apple’s marketing chief, Greg Joswiak, described the phone as having “a state-of-the-art titanium design” in the same announcement. That is promotional characterization of the design, not a comparative test result.
iPhone 17 Pro: an aluminum unibody with a different cooling story
Apple’s September 2025 announcement of the iPhone 17 Pro describes a “brushed aluminum unibody design” built from what Apple calls “a lightweight aerospace-grade 7000-series aluminum alloy.” In this model, aluminum is the structural frame rather than a substructure beneath another metal. Apple presents the design as its best-ever thermal performance in an iPhone. Read that as Apple’s product claim about this model, and check the Apple newsroom announcement for the iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max for the wording in full.

Heat management: a system property, not a metal property
Aluminum is often credited with spreading heat because it conducts it well, and Apple uses that reasoning for both models. In the iPhone 15 Pro, Apple attributes thermal dissipation to the aluminum frame. In the iPhone 17 Pro, Apple attributes heat movement and distribution to the aluminum unibody together with an Apple-designed vapor chamber.
Those statements describe integrated architectures. They do not establish that any aluminum phone runs cooler than any titanium phone. A titanium label alone does not determine cooling behavior, because the internal material layers, the vapor chamber or other heat paths, and the chip’s power management all shape how heat leaves the device. The Apple sources cited here do not include a controlled, sustained-performance comparison between metal frames, so the cooling advantage is a manufacturer claim about a specific design. For a buying decision, look for that model’s cooling description and for independent sustained-use testing of that model, not for a metal-level rule.

Strength and weight: what each metal is credited with
Strength relative to mass
Apple cites titanium’s strength-to-weight ratio as a reason for using it in the iPhone 15 Pro. That is a material-level property: titanium can offer high strength for its mass. It is not a finished measurement of how a complete phone resists drops or bending. The phone’s shape, the bonding of its glass, and the internal structure all contribute, and the sources reviewed here do not include a controlled test of the same design built in aluminum and in titanium. Treat the strength-to-weight language as Apple’s rationale, not as an independent durability result.
Whole-device weight
Published handset weights are the easiest numbers to find, and they are also the easiest to misread. Apple’s own specification pages list the following:

These two phones differ in size, display, and internal configuration, so the 29-gram gap cannot be credited to the frame metal. It is a whole-device difference between two different models. The same logic applies to Apple’s 2023 claim that the iPhone 15 Pro was the lightest Pro lineup at launch: that is a comparison inside Apple’s own lineup, not a controlled test of aluminum against titanium.

Repair and serviceability
Apple said of the iPhone 15 Pro’s design: “The aluminum frame helps with thermal dissipation and allows the back glass to be easily replaced.” That sentence describes the combined titanium-and-aluminum design of that model. It does not show that aluminum frames are generally easier to repair than titanium frames, and it should not be generalized into a universal rule. Repair difficulty depends on how the glass is bonded, where the internal parts sit, and what the manufacturer’s service documentation specifies for that model.
How to compare two frames before you buy
Because the metal alone rarely decides the outcome, a useful comparison follows the same steps for any two phones:
- Confirm the exact model name and open its official tech specs page for listed weight and dimensions. Compare only models that are close in size and configuration.
- Identify the construction. Check whether the frame is a full unibody, an outer band around another structural metal, or another arrangement, and do not assume that “titanium” means every structural part is titanium.
- Read the manufacturer’s cooling description for that model, and look for independent sustained-use testing of that same model rather than a comparison of metals.
- Treat strength claims as the manufacturer’s rationale unless independent testing of that model supports them.
- Check the official repair documentation for the specific model before you rely on any repairability claim.
- Weigh the result against price and against what you will do with the phone, such as heavy gaming, long video sessions, or frequent travel.
If you need a single rule, the honest answer is that the frame material is one input among several. Titanium is credited with strength for its weight, and aluminum with heat spreading and, in some designs, a full unibody. Whichever metal a particular phone uses, the complete model is what you should evaluate.
