Acronis True Image is worth considering if you want backup, recovery, drive cloning and security tools in one subscription—but its breadth is the vendor’s positioning, not proof that it outperforms specialist alternatives. It supports local backups, including to an external drive, while cloud storage and some additional features depend on the plan. Choose it based on the backup destinations and tools you actually need, and confirm current pricing and compatibility before subscribing.
What Acronis True Image includes
Acronis presents True Image as a home-user product combining backup, recovery, cloning and cybersecurity features. Its documented backup options include full-machine images and selected files or folders, scheduled jobs, local and cloud destinations, and recovery media. The feature set also describes disk cloning, encryption, Microsoft 365 backup and automatic replication from local storage to cloud. Availability varies by plan and platform, so check the current product and plan details rather than assuming every feature is included.

Acronis announced general availability of True Image 2026 on September 30, 2025. The company said that release introduced built-in Windows patch management and a strengthened security engine with AI-based threat detection, anti-ransomware and malware scanning. Those are vendor descriptions, not independently established performance results. See Acronis’s 2026 release announcement.

| Plan | Displayed US annual price | Cloud storage shown | Plan distinction |
|---|---|---|---|
| Essentials | $49.99 per year | None | Local backup and anti-ransomware protection; suited to people who do not need included cloud storage. |
| Advanced | $72.99 per year | 50 GB included; higher selectable options were shown | Adds cloud storage and features beyond Essentials; verify the current comparison for exact inclusions. |
| Premium | $124.99 per year | 1 TB included; selectable options were shown up to 10 TB | Includes a larger cloud-storage allowance and additional features; check current plan details. |
The prices and storage options above were displayed on Acronis’s US-facing product page; they are not a quote for every region or device configuration. Essentials makes most sense when local backup is enough. Advanced or Premium are relevant if you want cloud storage included, but compare the allowance with the amount of data you need to retain before paying for a tier.
Can it back up to an external hard drive?
Yes. Acronis documents local backup destinations, and an external USB hard drive or SSD is a practical optional destination for a PC backup. It is not bundled or required. Size the drive around the data being backed up and the number of backup versions you plan to keep; there is no universal capacity recommendation.

Local backup can be useful when you want a copy under your control or do not want cloud storage. Cloud backup can provide an off-site copy, but it depends on a plan that includes storage and on having enough allowance. Before choosing, decide whether you need a full image of the machine, selected files and folders, or both, and consider how often you will run backups and how long you will retain them.

Acronis’s release notes for build 42980, dated April 28, 2026, list Windows 11 and 64-bit Windows 10. They say installation is not supported on Windows XP, Vista, 7, 8/8.1, Windows 10 32-bit, or Windows 10 versions released before 2018. The notes also identify some unsupported Windows editions and configurations, so check the current release notes for the exact system you plan to use.

For Mac, those notes list macOS Tahoe 26, Sequoia 15, Sonoma 14, Ventura 13 and Monterey 12. They identify internal drives, USB, FireWire, Thunderbolt, network shares or NAS, and Acronis Cloud as supported storage media, while excluding Apple RAID and other RAID configurations except those specifically listed. File-system, storage and cloning limitations also depend on platform and setup; unusual hardware or storage configurations deserve a compatibility check before purchase.

The feature pages and release notes establish what Acronis says the product supports; they do not establish independent benchmark performance, real-world restore speed, reliability rates or malware-detection efficacy. No hands-on testing is represented here, so the product’s protection claims should be treated as vendor claims rather than measured outcomes.

Acronis’s product page, accessed October 7, 2026, reported “5 500 000+ users worldwide” and “500 000 000+ backups and clones.” These are company-reported figures, not independently audited counts. The same page makes a detection-rate claim, but does not identify the testing organization, date, sample, product version or protocol in the cited material; it is not enough to validate that claim independently.

How to decide whether to subscribe
- Choose based on destination: If you want local-only backups, Essentials is the tier described without cloud storage. If you need included cloud storage, compare Advanced and Premium allowances with your data and retention needs.
- Check the feature you actually need: Confirm that your intended plan and platform include cloning, Microsoft 365 backup, local-to-cloud replication or other specific tools before subscribing.
- Check your setup: Verify the OS version, edition, drive format and storage configuration against current release notes, particularly if you use RAID, a NAS or older Windows hardware.
- Set expectations about security: Treat anti-ransomware and malware protection as vendor-described capabilities, not a guarantee or independently demonstrated detection result.
- Compare the full trade-off: A combined subscription may suit someone seeking backup and security tools together. If you only need basic local backup, the extra capabilities may not justify paying for a broader bundle.
