Is a Windows Setting Making Your Laptop Overheat While Charging?

A Windows power mode can shift the performance-efficiency balance, but charging heat depends on the laptop too. Here’s what to check first.

There is no established universal Windows setting that makes laptops overheat while charging. Windows does let you choose a power mode, and selecting Best power efficiency is a reasonable, low-risk test if your laptop gets hot during demanding work. But charging heat can also depend on the charger, workload, ventilation, and the laptop’s firmware and cooling system.

What the Windows power mode can—and cannot—tell you

On supported Windows 11 and Windows 10 devices, open Settings > System > Power & battery > Power mode. Microsoft lists Best power efficiency, Balanced, and Best performance; which choices appear can depend on the device. The setting adjusts the efficiency-versus-performance preference, not a universal charging-temperature control. Microsoft explains the power modes.

Try a more efficient mode

  1. Open Settings > System > Power & battery.
  2. Under Power mode, choose Best power efficiency, if available.
  3. Use the laptop as you normally would while charging and note whether the heat changes under a similar workload.

This is a troubleshooting test, not proof that the original setting caused the heat. Results vary with the laptop and its manufacturer’s implementation. If the option is missing, do not assume there is a hidden Windows switch you need to uncover.

Why charging and temperature are not controlled by one setting

A laptop’s thermal behavior depends on its hardware, workload, cooling capacity, thermal sensors, firmware, and drivers. Windows works with platform-specific firmware and drivers to manage thermal zones and processor performance, including throttling when needed. Microsoft also notes that a device may slow or stop charging under thermal conditions to reduce heat. The exact behavior and available controls differ by model. Microsoft’s thermal-management guidance describes the platform-level approach, rather than a single setting that diagnoses every laptop.

Heat while plugged in can coincide with intensive activity such as gaming or video work, but that timing alone does not establish the cause. A power mode may affect performance and efficiency; it cannot, by itself, confirm that the charging system or cooling hardware is healthy.

If the laptop is hot and charging slowly, check the charging path

If the battery percentage falls while plugged in, or charging is unusually slow, check the adapter, cable, and port against the laptop manufacturer’s requirements. Use the charger and cable designed for the PC where possible, confirm that the adapter supplies the power level the model requires, and make sure you are using the correct charging port. Connector shape alone does not establish compatibility. Microsoft’s USB-C guidance notes that USB-C can support up to 5 V, 3 A, or 15 W, while USB Power Delivery can operate at higher power levels; the laptop’s actual requirements depend on the PC and charger.

When a power-mode change is not enough

If heat persists, is extreme, or occurs alongside shutdowns, swelling, an unusual odor, or visible damage to the adapter or cable, do not treat a Windows preference as the diagnosis. Stop using damaged charging equipment and seek the laptop manufacturer’s service guidance. There is no model-independent temperature threshold in the cited Microsoft guidance that can determine whether a particular laptop is safe.
