A desktop you already own may have a low upfront cost, yet its electricity, internet reliability, maintenance and any purchase or repair costs add up. A cloud encoder replaces much of that local burden with a recurring fee. Compare both over the same period using your desktop’s measured power draw, your electricity tariff and the price of a cloud service that actually fits your workload.
Start by matching the workload
“Cloud encoder” can mean different things. A managed service that loops uploaded, prerecorded videos is not automatically a substitute for a cloud computer running OBS to encode a live camera feed or a complex production. Identify what you need to stream before comparing costs:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- Uploaded videos or a playlist: a prerecorded-video looping service may fit.
- A live camera or OBS production: check that the cloud option supports continuous live encoding and the inputs, scenes and controls your production requires.
- A desktop running OBS in a cloud virtual machine: price the compute, storage and bandwidth, and confirm the machine and network configuration are suitable. A cloud GPU hourly rate alone is not a complete streaming cost.
YouTube defines an encoder as software or hardware that converts video into a digital format for streaming, and its verified encoder directory includes cloud services. Choose based on the actual production you need to run: YouTube’s guide to creating a live stream with an encoder.

Build a fair cost comparison
Choose a comparison period—such as six or twelve months—and total the costs on both sides. Treat the desktop’s purchase price as sunk only if you already own it and would keep it regardless of streaming. If buying a machine for this purpose, include its actual purchase cost and any necessary repair or setup.

| Cost or factor | Used desktop | Cloud option |
|---|---|---|
| Upfront | Actual purchase price, plus required repair or setup; zero incremental purchase cost only if you already own it. | Check for setup charges or other initial fees. |
| Recurring charges | Electricity, plus any internet or backup costs attributable to keeping the stream running. | Exact subscription or virtual-machine/GPU fee, plus storage and bandwidth where charged. |
| Workload fit | Must run the chosen encoder and production software continuously. | Confirm whether it is a prerecorded loop service, a general-purpose VM or a live production encoder. |
| Reliability and recovery | Depends on local power, ISP, hardware and restart automation. | Depends on the provider and service; check its recovery and support terms. |
| Maintenance and attention | You maintain the operating system, software, stream and local equipment. | The vendor may automate parts of the workflow; verify the service’s controls and limitations. |
Calculate the desktop’s electricity cost
Measure the computer’s actual average draw at the wall while it is doing the intended streaming work. A power supply’s rated wattage is not the same as the computer’s real consumption. A plug-in electricity usage meter can help with this measurement; it is useful for costing, not a streaming requirement.
Use this formula:
Average watts × operating hours ÷ 1,000 × your electricity price per kWh = electricity cost

For a 30-day month of 720 hours, 120 W would use 86.4 kWh and 200 W would use 144 kWh. Multiply the result by your own marginal electricity tariff. Those wattages are a worked assumption used in a StreamNeo comparison, not an independently measured or typical range for used office desktops; your meter reading is the useful figure for your machine.
Then add any internet or backup costs that change because the stream must remain online, as well as likely repairs or maintenance. Do not count a broadband bill as an added streaming cost if you would pay it anyway, but consider whether your existing connection has enough reliable upload capacity.

Use the cloud service’s complete price
Compare the exact service and plan you would use, not a generic “cloud” estimate. Include the recurring subscription or compute fee and any applicable storage or bandwidth charges. For example, Gyre’s pricing page, checked on 2026-10-03, listed Start at $49/month for one HD stream, Start+ at $99/month for four HD streams or one 4K stream, and PRO+ at $169/month for eight HD streams or two 4K streams. These are that vendor’s advertised prices on that date, not a market average; the service is specifically relevant to prerecorded-video looping, not every live production workload. Check its current plans and terms at Gyre’s pricing page.
Likewise, a published hourly cloud-GPU rate is not enough to establish the total price or suitability of a YouTube streaming setup. Compute, storage, bandwidth and configuration all matter; see PowerGPU’s cloud GPU pricing for an example of a vendor price page, not a universal encoder quote.

Check YouTube’s streaming requirements
Whatever you choose, the encoder still has to send a suitable, stable ingestion stream. YouTube’s current guidance supports RTMP/RTMPS ingest and H.264, H.265 (HEVC) and AV1 codecs, with up to 60 fps. For H.264, its recommended bitrate examples include 5 Mbps for 1080p30 and 6 Mbps for 1080p60; the same table lists 14 Mbps and 17 Mbps respectively as recommended values. Use YouTube’s resolution and frame-rate table for the exact setting you intend to send, rather than assuming a single bitrate works for every format.
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minutePC Slower Than It Used to Be?

It recommends streaming with RTMPS, the secure extension to RTMP. Your connection’s upload capacity must support reliable delivery at the selected settings; test before going live and monitor stream health while broadcasting. YouTube transcodes the incoming live stream into formats for viewers, so your encoder sends an ingestion stream rather than separately producing every viewer rendition. Reliability can change the cheaper choice
A desktop’s electricity calculation does not measure the cost of interruptions. Local power outages, router failures, ISP drops, hardware faults, operating-system updates and encoder crashes can stop a stream unless you have suitable backup and restart procedures. A cloud service shifts the computer and its network connection offsite, but its recovery behavior and support are provider-specific; check those terms rather than assuming every cloud option self-recovers.
For either setup, test the whole path before relying on it nonstop: confirm the stream key and ingest settings, verify the intended media or live inputs, check audio and video, and watch YouTube’s stream-health indicators. For a desktop, also test what happens after a restart or a brief internet interruption. For a cloud provider, check what happens after YouTube disconnects the stream and whether recovery is automatic.
So, which one is cheaper?
- A desktop you already own may cost less in cash if its measured power use and incremental internet costs are modest and you can maintain it. Its purchase price may be sunk, but power, reliability and your time are not necessarily free.
- A newly purchased desktop needs a longer-horizon comparison. Include purchase and repair costs alongside electricity and any backup requirements, then compare the total with the exact cloud plan over the same months.
- A managed cloud service may be worth paying more for if avoiding a computer running at home, local connection dependence or hands-on recovery matters more than the lowest calculated bill. Confirm that it supports your specific content and workflow.
Or let it run in the cloud
For prerecorded videos and playlists on YouTube, StreamNeo’s workflow is three steps: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, then go live. It loops the uploaded media from the cloud, so no home computer or connection has to stay on. Every slot streams the upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot; it also includes automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card, and the monthly option is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo is for uploaded-video streaming to YouTube, not a live camera feed. See StreamNeo for current details, then start the free first day.
