Is a Self-Hosted Compressing Proxy Private and Secure?

A self-hosted compressing proxy can protect privacy only if its TLS mode, compression behavior, metadata handling, and operational controls match your needs.

It can be, but self-hosting alone does not make a compressing proxy private or secure. The key questions are whether it merely tunnels HTTPS or decrypts it, what connection details it logs, and whether it compresses confidential data together with attacker-controlled input. A tunnel generally keeps HTTPS content opaque to the proxy; TLS interception makes the proxy a party that can inspect that content.

What determines what the proxy can see?

“Compressing proxy” can describe different designs: an intermediary that transforms cleartext HTTP, a reverse proxy that compresses generated responses, or a proxy used with protocols that support compression. Their visibility and risks differ. Check the actual TLS mode and where compression happens rather than relying on the product label.

Configuration What the proxy can see Privacy implication
HTTPS CONNECT tunnel without TLS interception Destination host and port, plus connection metadata; in the documented tunnel model, the HTTPS content remains encrypted and opaque to the proxy. Cloudflare’s documentation describes this kind of behavior for its own service. The proxy can still learn where connections go and may retain metadata. A tunnel does not hide destinations from its operator.
TLS termination or interception Decrypted HTTP requests and responses while inspected, including URLs, headers, and bodies. Treat the proxy as a trusted endpoint: its keys, administrator access, logs, storage, and updates become part of the security boundary.
Cleartext HTTP intermediary that compresses or transforms content The cleartext content it processes and the request and response metadata available at that hop. This is not end-to-end private from the intermediary. Hop-by-hop HTTP compression is uncommon, but the specific implementation matters.

CONNECT establishes a tunnel; it does not by itself mean the proxy decrypts HTTPS. A proxy that intercepts TLS instead presents a trusted certificate to the client, decrypts traffic, and establishes a separate connection onward. Installing an interception certificate authority on client devices therefore grants that proxy a powerful position in the trust chain. The Dutch NCSC’s TLS interception factsheet discusses operational concerns for TLS proxies.

Can compression expose passwords or session tokens?

Potentially, under specific conditions. Compression can reveal information when confidential and attacker-controlled data are compressed in the same context. If an attacker can influence input and observe changes in the resulting encrypted message lengths, those differences may help test guesses about a secret. Encryption protects message contents, but does not necessarily conceal their lengths.

RFC 9113, section 10.6, states: “Implementations communicating on a secure channel MUST NOT compress content that includes both confidential and attacker-controlled data unless separate compression dictionaries are used for each source of data.” It also says not to compress when the source of data cannot be reliably determined. See the RFC 9113 security considerations.

This is not a claim that all compression makes HTTPS unsafe. The relevant risk is the combination of a secret and attacker-controlled input in a shared compression context, together with an observable length signal. RFC 3749 also describes how compressed data length can reveal information when compression is combined with encryption: RFC 3749.

Dynamic authenticated responses need particular care

Pages generated for a logged-in user can mix secrets, such as session-related values, with text an attacker can influence. Microsoft’s ASP.NET Core guidance warns that compressing dynamically generated pages over secure connections can create CRIME and BREACH risks. In the versioned documentation, its EnableForHttps option is disabled by default; that is a framework-specific setting, not a universal proxy default. See Microsoft’s response-compression guidance.

What can leak even when HTTPS stays encrypted?

A tunnel limits content visibility, not all information. The proxy can observe destination information and may record timestamps, client addresses, or authentication metadata, depending on its design and logs. A destination site may also see the proxy’s egress address rather than the original client’s address; Cloudflare describes that behavior for its own Privacy Proxy, but it should not be assumed for every self-hosted setup.

  • 【VPN CASCADING AT EASE】Surpassing the mediocre performance of most VPN routers for home usage, the Beryl AX is capable of hosting a VPN server and VPN client at the same time within the same device, enabling users to remote access local network resources like Wi-Fi printers or local web servers, and accessing the public internet as a VPN client simultaneously.

Forwarding headers can reveal more than intended. RFC 7239 warns that the Forwarded header “can reveal internal structures of the network setup behind the NAT or proxy setup, which may be undesired.” Review both Forwarded and X-Forwarded-For at trust boundaries; the standard’s security discussion is at RFC 7239, section 8.2.

How to assess and reduce the risk

  1. Confirm the TLS mode. Determine whether HTTPS connections use CONNECT tunneling or TLS termination/interception. If the proxy only needs to relay HTTPS, prefer tunneling over installing a trusted interception CA on client devices. If inspection is required, restrict and protect the CA private key and administrative access.
  2. Map where compression runs. Identify whether it compresses cleartext traffic, responses generated by an application, or another protocol layer. Avoid compressing attacker-controlled input and confidential data together; follow the guidance for the particular proxy or framework rather than assuming another product’s defaults apply.
  3. Review logs and retention. Check whether the proxy records destinations, timestamps, client addresses, or authentication metadata. Keep only information needed for operations, set a retention period, and limit who can access logs. Logging behavior is implementation-specific.
  4. Constrain forwarded information. Decide which proxy hops are trusted to set Forwarded and X-Forwarded-For. Remove or obfuscate internal details that should not leave your network, and avoid echoing forwarding data in responses.
  5. Patch the proxy and cryptographic dependencies. Keep the proxy software and its TLS libraries updated; interception increases the consequences of flaws in either.
  6. Bound CONNECT resource use. Apply sensible rate and resource limits. RFC 9113 cautions that stream-concurrency limits alone may not constrain all resources associated with CONNECT connections; see its section 10.5.

What self-hosting changes—and what it does not

Self-hosting changes who operates the proxy and gives you control over deployment and data handling. It does not, on its own, guarantee anonymity, prevent logging, or protect traffic from a proxy that decrypts it. The effective privacy boundary depends on configuration, the network path, compression behavior, and operational security.

SSRouter S1 WiFi 6 VPN Router with Managed Nodes and Smart Routing
  • Managed-node control in the router: Browse available SSRouter regions in S1's local dashboard and select a managed node without configuring a separate VPN provider.
  • Switch nodes in the browser: Join S1 WiFi or LAN, sign in to the local dashboard, select Use this node, and see which managed node is active.
  • Three routing modes: Direct uses the regular internet connection; Global routes supported traffic through the selected managed node; Smart applies country-based rules to supported traffic.
  • Encrypted router-to-node link: Traffic routed through an SSRouter-managed node uses Trojan over TLS between S1 and that node. Compatible devices connected to S1 do not each need a VPN app; AX3000 WiFi 6 and four 2.5G Ethernet ports support wired and wireless use.
  • Setup and service terms: Connect S1 WAN to an internet-ready DHCP router or gateway; S1 is not a modem. Managed-node access ends after 30 days or 100 GB from first activation, whichever comes first; no automatic renewal; a separate plan is required afterward.

Because no particular proxy implementation or deployment is specified, there is no universal safe/unsafe verdict or default setting to rely on. Evaluate its current TLS behavior, compression scope, logging, forwarding rules, key handling, update status, and resource controls.
