How Streaming Royalties and Metal Prices Affect a Precious Metals Royalty Company’s Revenue

A precious-metals royalty company’s revenue can rise when the metals it is entitled to sell or receive become more valuable—but the effect depends on whether it holds a stream or a royalty, how much eligible production is delivered, and the contract’s pricing and deduction rules. For a streamer, the metal’s resale value drives sales revenue while its contractual purchase cost affects the margin. A royalty holder receives a contract-defined share of revenue or production, often after specified deductions.

How a metal stream affects revenue

A stream is a purchase agreement: in exchange for an upfront deposit, the company receives the right to buy some or all of one or more metals produced at a mine at a price set by the agreement. Royal Gold describes this arrangement in its 2024 annual report.

After metal is delivered, the streamer takes it into inventory and sells it. Royal Gold says its metal sales are primarily made through forward contracts based on average spot prices. In its 2024 report, it says the pricing period typically runs from ten days to three months, depending on delivery frequency and sales policy. Revenue is recognized when control, custody, and title transfer to the purchaser on settlement.

This creates two distinct effects:

  • Gross metal-sale revenue: If the amount sold is unchanged, a higher resale price can increase reported sales revenue.
  • Cost of sales and margin: The stream agreement sets the purchase price paid for delivered metal. The difference between resale proceeds and that cost affects the margin; it is not the same thing as gross revenue.

Accordingly, a metal-price increase does not automatically translate into an equal increase in profit or margin. The stream’s purchase-price formula and the timing of delivery, pricing, and settlement also matter.

How a royalty affects revenue

A royalty is a non-operating interest that entitles its holder to a contract-defined percentage of project revenue or of metals produced. The agreement may allow specified deductions. The mine operator, rather than the royalty holder, is responsible for operating the mine and marketing its production.

Royal Gold says its royalty payments use a contractually specified commodity price for the period in which production occurred. Its reported royalty revenue is net of allowable offsite treatment, refining, and transportation costs, and sometimes other contractually permitted costs. The exact entitlement, pricing period, and deductions depend on the agreement, as described in the company’s 2024 annual report.

If production and other terms stay constant, a higher relevant metal price can increase royalty revenue. But changes in eligible production can also change revenue when metal prices are flat. Contract pricing periods and deductions mean the amount recognized may differ from a simple calculation using the current spot price and the royalty percentage.

What to check when assessing metal-price exposure

Metal prices are only one part of the revenue picture. When evaluating a particular company, examine the terms and reporting policies for the interests that contribute to its revenue:

  • Metal mix: Identify which metals drive the portfolio and whether the relevant contract price follows spot, a periodic average, or another stated basis.
  • Production and deliveries: Check how much eligible production was produced and delivered under each agreement. Price exposure cannot by itself establish the volume of revenue.
  • Stream purchase terms: Compare the contractual cost of delivered metal with the price basis used for resale. The purchase cost affects the economics after sales, not the gross sale price itself.
  • Royalty terms and deductions: Look for the percentage or metal entitlement, applicable pricing period, and costs the agreement permits the operator to deduct.
  • Revenue timing: Distinguish production, delivery, sale, and settlement dates. They can fall in different reporting periods; Royal Gold’s 2024 report says stream-sale revenue is recognized upon settlement when control, custody, and title transfer.

Metal-price sensitivity is company-specific

Royal Gold’s 2023 annual report states that its revenue is directly tied to metal prices and is particularly sensitive to gold-price changes because most of its revenue comes from gold stream and royalty interests. It also explains that, under its stream agreements, the company buys metal at a fixed price or a stated percentage of market price and then sells it in the open market. This is Royal Gold’s disclosure, not a universal sensitivity estimate for the sector.

The cited disclosure does not quantify how much revenue changes for a given move in gold or another metal. A percentage sensitivity should not be inferred without company-specific data. For a particular issuer, review its current filing and the agreements and accounting policies it describes; the details are not necessarily identical across royalty and streaming companies.
