The Raspberry Pi Zero 2 W’s official specifications list H.264/MPEG-4 video decoding up to 1080p30, but that does not guarantee smooth playback of current YouTube videos in a browser. And the board does not remove ads or provide YouTube Premium benefits. If you already own one, you can test it for your needs; buying one solely to reduce YouTube costs is not supported by the available evidence.
Can the Raspberry Pi Zero 2 W play YouTube?
Possibly, but the published specifications do not establish dependable playback of current YouTube streams in a browser. Raspberry Pi lists a 1GHz quad-core 64-bit Broadcom BCM2710A1 processor with Arm Cortex-A53 cores, 512MB of LPDDR2 memory, 2.4GHz Wi-Fi, mini-HDMI output, and H.264/MPEG-4 decoding up to 1080p30. The April 2024 product brief also specifies a 5V DC, 2.5A input requirement. (Raspberry Pi’s launch announcement; April 2024 product brief)

That decode ceiling describes hardware capability; it is not a promise that YouTube’s current stream formats will play smoothly through a browser. Playback also depends on the format YouTube serves and the software path used to decode it. Raspberry Pi’s hardware overview does not provide a current YouTube-on-Zero-2-W playback benchmark, so there is no substantiated resolution guarantee here. (Raspberry Pi computer hardware)

That is a specific benchmark comparison, not a measurement of YouTube playback.

What YouTube playback depends on
YouTube advises using an up-to-date browser and an internet connection of at least 500 Kbps for viewing. Its recommendations call for higher sustained speeds at higher resolutions, and YouTube notes that some Premium videos need faster connections and more processing power. These are service requirements, not proof that the Zero 2 W can decode a given stream: adequate Wi-Fi does not guarantee adequate processing, and processor specifications do not guarantee an adequate connection. Check YouTube’s system requirements and supported devices for its resolution-specific guidance.
If you already own the board, try the browser and video quality you actually intend to use, on your own network. Judge the result by whether playback remains smooth at that quality; do not infer performance from the 1080p30 decode specification alone. A reproducible test on your setup is the practical way to answer the question for your particular stream and software.

Would a Pi reduce your YouTube bill?
The board itself does not cancel a subscription, remove ads, or supply Premium benefits. YouTube offers free viewing with ads. Premium provides ad-free viewing for millions of videos across supported devices and platforms, though creator-inserted promotions and some live-event or channel promotions may still appear. Premium Lite is a lower-priced membership with reduced ad interruptions, but YouTube says ads can still appear on music content, Shorts, and while searching or browsing. Availability and pricing vary by location; check YouTube’s current local membership page before comparing costs. (YouTube Premium benefits; Premium Lite membership)
So the relevant comparison is your actual local membership cost against the complete cost of a Pi setup—not a board specification against a monthly subscription in isolation. Include the board, power and display connections you need, plus any other setup costs. The cited product information gives a historical launch price of $15 on 28 October 2021, not a current retail quote; the available information also does not establish your local board or subscription prices. A break-even period therefore cannot be calculated from these figures.

When to try the Zero 2 W—and when not to buy it for this
- Already have one: It is reasonable to experiment with YouTube at your intended resolution, with the understanding that smooth browser playback is not confirmed by the hardware specification.
- Need a dependable viewing device: Compare a current streaming device you can verify with YouTube against the Pi on playback at your desired resolution, total setup cost, browser support, and setup effort.
- Want to avoid ads: Compare YouTube’s current local Premium and Premium Lite options with free ad-supported viewing. A Pi does not substitute for either membership.
- Considering a purchase just to save subscription money: Do not assume a saving or a payback period without current local prices and a successful playback trial.
Or let it run in the cloud
If by “streaming costs” you mean keeping a YouTube channel live 24/7 from prerecorded videos, that is a different problem from watching YouTube on a Pi. StreamNeo keeps an uploaded video or playlist looping to a YouTube channel from the cloud: upload your recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, then go live. Nothing needs to stay powered on at home; each slot streams your upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly service is $9.99 per month. It is for prerecorded video, not camera streaming. Start your free day with StreamNeo.
